LG G6 Screen Replacement

The LG G6 screen is fragile; handle with care when removing the LCD under the glass.

  • Remove the rear cover to access internal components.
  • Take out the motherboard for full access to the display assembly.
  • Carefully detach the broken or unresponsive G6 screen from the phone's chassis.

Step 1 | Rear Glass Panel

Be extremely cautious when cutting and prying near the fingerprint sensor to avoid damaging its delicate cable.

  • Locate the clearance between the rear glass panel's edge and the fingerprint sensor ribbon cable, visible on the backside of the panel in photo 1.
  • Insert an opening tool more than 3 mm into this area will risk damaging or tearing the fingerprint sensor cable.
  • Slice and pry carefully to the left side of the fingerprint sensor from the outside of the phone, as shown in photo 3.

Step 2

Step 2 image

Apply heat to the rear panel using a hairdryer, heat gun, or iOpener for 1 minute.

  • Target the lower edge of the G6 where the adhesive is located.
  • This will help soften the adhesive, making it easier to open.

Step 3

Step 3 image

Attach a suction cup to the rear panel near the heated area.

Step 4

Step 4 image

Prop up the heated edge of the phone on an object 0.5 inches (13 mm) thick, like an eraser, to angle it for easier opening.

  • Use a small object to prop the phone if you don't have one.
  • Perform this step at the desk or table edge as alternative.

Applying significant force may be necessary; if struggling, reapply heat and try again.

  • Lift the rear panel's bottom edge with a suction cup, creating a slight gap between the panel and frame.
  • Press an opening tool into the gap once you've created it.

Be cautious not to break the fragile rear glass panel by using excessive force or metal tools.

Step 5

Step 5 image

Thumbnail 3

Slide a credit card or similar tool back and forth across the phone's bottom edge to loosen the rear glass panel.

Adhesive can quickly re-form, so insert an opening pick into the gap as soon as it is wide enough.

  • Remove any additional tools used to separate the panel.

Step 6

Step 6 image

Re-apply heat to each edge as needed before slicing.

  • Use multiple opening picks, leaving one in place on each side after slicing to prevent re-adhesion.
  • Opening pick: Slide along the left edge of the phone to slice through the rear panel adhesive.

Step 7

Step 7 image

Reinsert the opening pick at the bottom edge and slide it upwards along the right edge.

  • Cut through the adhesive as you go.

Step 8

Locate the fingerprint reader cable, which runs to the left of the camera.

Careful when cutting through the upper edge adhesive.

  • Slide an opening pick across the top edge, separating the adhesive securing the rear glass panel.

Step 9

Step 9 image

Use an opening pick to gently pry up the rear glass panel.

  • Continue prying until the panel comes free.
  • Set the panel aside and proceed with further repairs.

Step 10

Step 10 image

Remove any remaining adhesive with tweezers before reusing the rear glass panel.

When cleaning adhesion areas, use high concentration isopropyl alcohol (at least 90%) and a lint-free cloth, swiping only in one direction to avoid damaging the surface.

  • Turn on your phone and test it before installing new adhesive.
  • Peel away replacement adhesive liner, align with back of phone, and press into place.

Apply strong, steady pressure for several minutes to help adhesive bond after installation.

  • To secure rear panel without new adhesive, remove large chunks that might prevent proper seating.
  • Apply heat and pressure to secure the panel, though this may compromise waterproofing.

Step 11 | Battery Disconnect

Use a flat-end opening tool to gently pry up the USB-C/mic assembly.

  • Pry carefully, taking care not to damage nearby components.
  • Once separated, remove the assembly from the phone.

Step 21 | Screen

Step 21 image

Cutting through the adhesive may damage the phone's internal components.

  • Refer to the back side of the screen image (at left) for orientation.
  • Note the narrow clearance between the screen edge and the LCD underneath.

When re-using the screen, be cautious when cutting through adhesive to avoid damage.

Step 22

Step 22 image

Apply heat to the screen's lower edge using a hairdryer, heat gun, or an iOpener for about 1 minute.

  • The heated area will help loosen the adhesive holding the G6 screen in place.
  • Be prepared to open the device after the adhesive has softened.

Step 23

Step 23 image

Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Place the flat end of an opening tool against the lower edge of the inside of the phone below the battery.

  • Carefully apply pressure to the backside of the screen with the opening tool to create a gap between the screen and the body of the phone.
  • Note: Separating the adhesive may require some force. If needed, reheat the lower edge of the phone to soften the adhesive and try again.

Step 24

Step 24 image

Thumbnail 3

Be cautious when inserting the opening pick, as excessive force can damage the LCD underneath the glass.

  • Slide a credit card or similar tool back and forth across the bottom edge of the phone in the gap.
  • Avoid applying too much pressure to prevent damaging the LCD under the screen's glass, especially if you plan to reuse the display.

Step 25

Step 25 image

Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Avoid inserting your pick more than 1 mm into the long edges to prevent LCD damage.

  • Continue separating the adhesive around the screen using your opening pick.
  • If reusing the screen, be cautious not to insert the pick too far.

Step 26

Step 26 image

Careful not to damage display cable.

  • Lift the screen up, starting at top edge near front-facing camera.
  • Pull the display cable through its chassis slot.

Remove the screen.

Clean phone frame thoroughly to ensure new adhesive bonds properly.

  • Use high concentration isopropyl alcohol for tough spots.
  • Clean all adhesive residue from phone frame before installing new screen.
