LG G6 Rear Glass Panel Replacement

This repair may damage the phone's display if not done correctly.

  • Remove any protective cases or covers from your LG G6.
  • Pry off the rear glass panel using a spudger.
  • Disconnect the connectors securing the rear glass to the frame.

Step 1 | Rear Glass Panel

Be cautious not to damage the fragile ribbon cable beside the fingerprint sensor when cutting the adhesive.

  • Identify the rear glass panel's clearance from the ribbon cable using the first photo as reference.
  • Slice and pry carefully on the left side of the fingerprint sensor, referring to the third photo.
  • Avoid inserting an opening tool more than 3 mm into the phone in this area to prevent damage or tearing of the fingerprint sensor cable.

Step 2

Step 2 image

Apply heat to the backside of the device before attempting to remove the rear panel.

  • Use a hairdryer, heat gun, or iOpener to apply heat to the lower edge for about one minute.
  • The adhesive should soften, making it easier to open the rear panel.

Step 3

Step 3 image

Attach a suction cup to the rear panel, near the heated edge.

Step 4

Be cautious not to apply excessive force, as the rear glass panel may break.

  • Prop up the phone's heated edge on an object at least 0.5 inches (13 mm) thick, such as an eraser, to angle the opening tool for easier insertion.
  • If no propping aid is available, perform this step near a desk or table edge to achieve a suitable entry angle.

Using your suction cup, lift the rear panel's bottom edge to create a slight gap between the panel and frame.

This may require considerable force; if needed, reapply heat to soften the adhesive, then try again, as it cools rapidly.

  • Once a gap is created, carefully insert the flat end of an opening tool into the space.

To avoid damaging the rear glass panel, refrain from using metal tools and excessive force.

Step 5

  • Slide a strong opening tool back and forth across the bottom edge of the phone to cut through the adhesive.
  • Insert an opening pick into the gap once it's large enough, to prevent re-adhesion.
  • Remove the opening tool.

Apply heat to the edges as needed before cutting.

  • Use multiple opening picks, leaving one on each side after slicing, to prevent re-adhesion.
  • Slide an opening pick along the left edge of the phone to slice through adhesive.

Step 7

Slide the opening pick back into position at the bottom edge.

  • Guide the pick upwards along the right edge, applying gentle pressure to separate the adhesive.

Be cautious when cutting through adhesive near the camera.

  • Slide an opening pick along the top edge to separate the rear glass panel's adhesive.

Use an opening pick to carefully pry up the rear glass panel.

  • Continue prying until the panel is completely removed.

Step 10

Step 10 image

Be cautious when handling adhesive and phone components.

  • Remove remaining adhesive with tweezers from both rear panel and phone chassis.
  • Clean adhesion areas with high concentration isopropyl alcohol (at least 90%) and a lint-free cloth, swiping in one direction only.

Ensure your phone is functional before reassembling.

  • Peel away replacement adhesive's liner and align it with the back of the phone.
  • Press the liner into place, then remove any remaining liners.
  • Reinstall rear glass panel.

Apply strong pressure to form a good bond between adhesive and phone components.

  • Place phone under a stack of heavy books for several minutes.
  • If reinstalling without replacing adhesive, remove large chunks of adhesive and apply heat with pressure after installation.

Transfer the fingerprint sensor and camera bracket to the replacement glass.

  • Avoid damaging the rear button ribbon cable; do not push directly against it with your pry tool.

  • Do not push the spudger in too far, or you risk damaging the rear button.

  • Slide a halberd spudger into the opening on the edge of the rear button bracket and pry around the bracket to release the adhesive.
  • Remove the fingerprint sensor and camera bracket.

Step 12

Slide an opening pick between the rear button membrane and the rear case.

  • Work the pick around the edge of the membrane to separate it from the rear case.
  • A lot of force might be needed, as the adhesive is strong.
  • Pry slowly and carefully to avoid damaging the membrane.

Step 13

Step 13 image
  • Use a halberd spudger or similar plastic pry tool to carefully pry the rear button chip away from the rear case.

Step 14

  • Opening pick to gently pry off contact pad from rear case.
  • Remove rear button assembly.

Step 15

Step 15 image

Avoid overheating a single area of the rear glass — risk of damage.

  • Apply an iOpener over the camera area to soften the adhesive under the camera bracket.
  • Alternatively, use a heat gun or hair dryer, but keep it moving to avoid overheating.

Step 16

Step 16 image

Insert a plastic opening pick under the top left corner of the black camera bracket.

  • Slide the tool along the top edge of the bracket, then around the corner.
  • The goal is to cut the adhesive holding the camera bracket in place.

Insert a spudger under the left side of the camera bracket.

  • Slide the spudger down the left side of the bracket to release more adhesive.
  • Continue cutting and slicing until the bracket can be pried up.

Step 18

Step 18 image

Remove the camera bracket from the rear glass.

  • Inspect your replacement rear glass panel for new camera bracket adhesive and fingerprint sensor assembly adhesive.
  • If no adhesive is provided, apply a suitable adhesive during reassembly.

Always clean adhesion areas with 90%+ isopropyl alcohol on a lint-free cloth before applying new adhesive from pre-cut sheet.

  • Wipe in one direction to prevent smearing when applying the adhesive.
