LG G6 Fingerprint Sensor Replacement

If using a non-adhesive replacement part, procure additional fingerprint sensor adhesive, available as pre-cut strips or thin high-bond tape.

Step 1 | iOpener Heating

Pre-clean your microwave thoroughly to avoid gunk adhering to the iOpener.

  • Position the iOpener in the center of the microwave.
  • (For carousel microwaves only): Ensure the turntable spins freely to prevent overheating and iOpener damage.

Step 2

Step 2 image

Never touch a swollen iOpener — risk of burn injury.

  • Heat the iOpener in the microwave for 30 seconds, adjusting time based on wattage as needed.
  • The iOpener is ready when it's slightly too hot to touch.
  • As it cools, reheat every 30 seconds as necessary throughout the repair procedure.

Do not overheat the iOpener; overheating may cause it to burst (do not exceed 100°C / 212°F).

  • If still too hot, continue using and wait for it to cool down some more before reheating.
  • A properly heated iOpener should remain warm for up to 10 minutes.

Step 3

Step 3 image

Always hold the iOpener by a flat end to avoid the hot center.

  • Remove the iOpener from the microwave.
  • Use an oven mitt to handle the extremely hot iOpener.

Step 4 | Alternate iOpener heating method

Do not proceed without proper caution — extremely hot iOpener will cause burns.

  • Fully submerge an iOpener in a pot or pan of boiling water.
  • Turn off the heat and let it soak for 2-3 minutes.
  • Use tongs to carefully remove the heated iOpener.
  • Thoroughly dry the iOpener with a towel.
  • The iOpener will be extremely hot, so handle it by only the end tabs.

When reheating, repeat steps as necessary to achieve optimal temperature.

Step 5 | Fingerprint Sensor

Step 5 image

Apply iOpener to a long edge of the phone for approximately 2 minutes.

Be cautious not to overheat; follow iOpener guidelines as necessary.

Do not insert the spudger blade too far into these areas, as it may damage the rear button ribbon cable and chip.

  • Cut through adhesive at the edge of the rear glass panel.
  • Also cut through extra adhesive in the following locations:
    • Behind the rear button ribbon cable
    • Near the chip

Step 7

Step 7 image

Apply a suction cup to the heated area, avoiding the curved edge.

  • Lift on the suction cup carefully.
  • Insert a halberd spudger or opening pick under the rear glass.

Step 8

Step 8 image

Reinsert the iOpener tool firmly into the glass.

  • Reheat the iOpener until it is soft and pliable again.
  • Reapply the heated iOpener to the affected area.

Step 9

Use a Halberd spudger to pry open the phone by sliding its blade along the side.

  • The spudger will help separate the adhesive.

Apply the heat and cutting process to the remaining three phone edges, leaving a prying tool in place on each.

  • Continue heating the adhesive until it is sufficiently weakened.
  • Carefully pry along each edge without completely separating the case, as this can cause resealing of the adhesive.

Step 11

Remove residual adhesive using the opening picks to access the internal components.

  • Use the opening picks to carefully slice through and remove the glass from the phone.

If your replacement rear glass does not come with pre-applied adhesive, apply new adhesive or high-bond tape during reassembly.

Step 12

Avoid pushing directly against the rear button ribbon cable, as this may damage it.

  • Slide a halberd spudger into the opening on the edge of the rear button bracket.
  • Continue sliding the spudger blade around the bracket to cut all adhesive, but avoid pushing too far and damaging the rear button.
  • Remove the rear button bracket.

Prying the membrane can cause damage if done incorrectly.

  • Insert an opening pick between the rear button membrane and the rear case.
  • Slide the pick around the edge of the membrane to loosen its adhesive.
  • Pry slowly, as excessive force may puncture or stretch the membrane.

Step 14

Remove the rear button chip from the rear case using the blade of a halberd spudger.
