Home Repair Guides LG LG G LG G2 LG G2 Rear Camera Replacement

Step 1 | Buy a replacement camera module

Step 1 image

Observe the protective tape on the bottom covering the contacts.

  • Leave the tape intact during new camera module installation.
  • When removing the old module, proceed without concern for damaging the tape or contacts.

Take care not to damage the tape or underlying contacts when handling the new module.

  • Consider purchasing a replacement camera module online for under $10 USD.
  • An alternative is to salvage a working camera module from a broken LG G2 smartphone.

Initial removal may take up to half an hour, but subsequent replacements will be quick and easy.

Step 2 | Remove back cover After Ejecting SIM!

Step 2 image
  • Optional: Backup phone data before proceeding.
    • Power down the device.
    • Eject the SIM card.

Using a Spudger or Guitar Pick, pry the plastic back off:

    • Start around the SIM slot and gently nudge inwards.
    • Pry up and work your way around the entire unit.
    • Avoid damaging cable areas on the inside of the phone.

Note the location of clip claws on the back cover – these can be tough to break.

Consider releasing either the top or bottom short edge first, then working your way down the long edge to avoid increased clamping force.

Step 3 | Remove the 7 screws from the camera cover.

Work on a well-lit, flat surface.

  • Use clear tape to temporarily hold loose screws in order of reassembly on a piece of paper or the table.
  • The top row has four screws, and the middle row has three screws; one screw in the middle is shorter and black.

Be gentle when prying up the left and right middle edges to remove the back cover as shown in the photo, taking care not to damage the motherboard underneath the black cover.

  • If the back cover sticks, apply gentle pressure at the noted locations; it should come off easily without requiring excessive force.

Step 4 | (optional, but recommended) Disconnect lower connector 1 of 5, and 2 antenna cables

Avoid damaging delicate components by prying with the black and white antenna cables.

  • The motherboard will hinge up along the black horizontal bar.
  • Disconnect the lower connector using a spudger/guitar pick. Be careful when handling the antenna connectors with a fine tip, flat screwdriver to gently pry them free.
  • Pull up and off the disconnected connector.
  • For reassembly, ensure the black antenna cable fits into the guide slot along the edge of the motherboard.

Step 5 | Disconnect connector 2 of 5

Use a spudger or guitar pick to gently pry up the cable.

  • Pull gently on the tape holding the cable down to the motherboard.
  • This will allow you to flip the cable up when tilting the motherboard later.

Step 6 | Disconnect top edge connectors 2x - 3&4 of 5

Step 6 image

Use a plastic spudger to gently lift the two retaining clips.

  • They will pivot upward when needed to access the tilted motherboard.

Step 7 | Disconnect connector 5 of 5

Step 7 image

The final connection is the camera module connector. Flip the cable upwards, allowing it to clear the path for the motherboard.

Step 8 | Gently tilt up motherboard, careful to watch 4x flex cables

Be extremely cautious when lifting the motherboard as three of the four flex cables are situated near the top edge and one adjacent to the camera module.

  • Use a spudger or fingers to gently lift the top of the motherboard.
  • Ensure that the flex cables (3 from the top edge, 1 next to the camera module) do not catch or tear by flipping them upwards.

Step 9 | Remove broken camera module, replace.

Step 9 image

Use a flat head screwdriver to pry up the camera module, being careful not to damage it further.

  • Insert and lift the plastic spudger between the module and the phone body for added protection.

Keep the top of the camera clean of dust using an electronics duster spray as needed.

Clean the back and inside of the camera cover thoroughly to prevent dust from affecting photo quality.

  • When reassembling, ensure the 4 flex cables clear the motherboard by gently aligning them before pressing down to click each into place.
