Google Pixel Unresponsive Black Screen

Your Google Pixel is not turning on or shows a black screen?

  • Determine if the issue is due to software (bootloader mode, fastboot) or hardware causes.

Step 1 | Dirty or Obstructed Sensors

Dirty or smudged sensors near the top edge of the display can cause incorrect light level readings.

  • Clean the entire phone screen with a damp microfiber cloth, paying extra attention to the top edge where the sensors are located.
  • If necessary, use screen cleaner for stubborn grime.

If you've recently repaired your device, ensure that any gasket around the sensors is properly seated and in place.

Step 2 | Sensor Fault

Step 2 image

Check for liquid damage along the top edge of the phone, as the earpiece is a common entry point.

  • Inspect the ambient light sensor and proximity sensor for issues, which can cause unwanted screen behavior.
  • Identify the source of the problem:
    • The sensors may be mounted directly to the logic board.
    • Or they may be connected via a small flex cable with other components.

Step 3 | Display Malfunction or Damage

Step 3 image

A broken screen can be caused by accidental damage during repair.

  • Try plugging your phone into a computer to see if it detects the device and provides any feedback.
  • Enable USB debugging, but note that this setting requires a functional screen.

A black blotch or line on an AMOLED display may indicate more than just a cracked glass.

  • Check for visible cracks in the glass.
  • Inspect the display for signs of damage, such as black blotches or lines.

If your screen is damaged beyond repair, consider replacing it and follow the associated iFixit guide.

Step 4 | Logic Board Malfunction

Step 4 image

Logic board failure is a common issue if previous repairs have not worked.

  • Inspect the board for signs of damage or burn, liquid residue, corrosion, or bending.
  • If liquid damage is suspected, consult the iPhone Liquid Damage Guide.

Replacing the logic board may be the best solution for a DIYer.

  • Repairing the board requires specialized tools and microsoldering skills.
  • For those interested in learning more, recommended resources include reading materials and tutorials on micro soldering.
