Google Pixel Frozen Screen

Desperate measures can cause unintended harm to your device.

  • Restart your phone by pressing and holding the power button until it shuts down.
  • Release the button and press it again to turn it back on.

Step 1 | Full Storage

Step 1 image

Maxed-out storage can cripple your phone's OS, so think of it like a crowded sock drawer: too much "stuff" and it stops working.

  • Check if your phone is running out of space by opening Settings > Storage > Free up space.
  • View each category to see what's consuming the most space.
  • Connect to a computer via USB (select media/MTP mode) and remove files to free up space.

If your phone freezes, this method allows you to transfer data quickly without interacting with it much.

  • On Google Pixel devices, enable automatic storage cleaning by going to Settings > Storage > Free up space > Overflow Icon ⋮ > Settings > Smart Storage.

Step 2 | Outdated or Broken Apps

Outdated apps can cause issues due to compatibility with newer Android versions or related apps.

  • Select the profile icon on the top right in the Google Play Store.
  • Navigate to Manage apps & device and click Update All.
  • Alternatively, locate and update the problematic app individually.

Note: This section may have minor layout changes over time but its location remains largely unchanged.

Step 3 | Heavy Workload

Check for hardware limitations on your cell phone.

  • Close running apps by swiping up from the bottom of the screen and tapping Clear all.
  • Verify if system or application updates are processing, utilizing a high amount of system resources.
  • Wait for these updates to finish, then check for improvement in phone responsiveness.

Step 4 | Android Corruption

Performing a factory reset will completely wipe all data on your phone.

  • Backup your phone's data before proceeding, as it will be deleted during the reset process.
  • To reset from Settings, go to System > Reset options > Erase all data.
  • You may need to confirm your PIN or password before resetting.
  • The reset process will show progress onscreen and may restart a few times.

If you cannot access the Settings menu, you can try an alternate method by resetting from recovery mode.

  • This method requires precision when pressing buttons due to timing.
  • Remove any case on your phone before attempting this method.
