Nexus 6P Rear Camera Replacement

This guide shows how to replace the rear camera in a Nexus 6P smartphone.

  • Dismantle the device and remove the battery.
  • Disconnect the battery connector.
  • Remove the rear camera module.
  • Apply new adhesive where necessary when reassembling your phone.

Step 1 | Back Cover

Removing the back cover with an iOpener can be challenging.

  • We recommend using a heat gun for this step.
  • However, if using an iOpener, be aware that the adhesive is extremely sticky and may damage the glass or plastic cover.

Use a SIM card eject tool to remove the SIM card tray.

  • Apply heat to loosen the adhesive underneath the small plastic cover at the bottom of the phone using an iOpener.

Take great care when handling the sharp knife

  • Insert the knife between the phone and the plastic cover.
  • Pry up the plastic cover with the knife until an opening pick can be inserted.
  • Slide the opening pick underneath the plastic cover to cut the adhesive.

Apply heat from an iOpener to loosen the adhesive under the top glass cover.

  • Be careful not to apply too much pressure, which may crack the glass.

    Insert a kitchen knife between the phone and the glass cover.
  • Pry up the glass cover until you can insert an opening pick.

Wear protective glasses and protective gloves when handling broken glass.

  • Insert an opening pick under the glass cover and slide it until the adhesive is cut.
  • Pry off the glass cover using the opening pick.

  • Remove the six Phillips #00 screws
  • Use tweezers to carefully lift and remove any stickers covering the screw head, allowing a secure fit for the driver.

Be extremely cautious with sharp objects to avoid injury.

  • Insert a razor knife between the metal back cover and front glass to create a gap.
  • Pierce the gap with an opening pick, sliding it to the top right corner.
  • Introduce a second opening pick, positioning it at the top left corner.

Slide the opening picks along the edges to release plastic clips and separate components.

  • Continue moving the opening picks to fully disengage the back cover from the midframe.
  • Once the clips are released, carefully remove the rear cover.

Step 7 | Rear Camera

  • Remove the six Phillips #000 screws.
  • Use extreme care when handling cables.
  • Using tweezers, remove the metal shields covering the:
    • battery/main flex cable
    • display flex cable

Unplug the antenna cable using tweezers.

  • Disconnect the display and battery flex cable with a spudger.

  • Disconnect the main flex cable using a spudger.
  • Pry up the motherboard with a spudger until you can get a good grip.

Do not damage the front facing camera or headphone jack, which are still connected to the motherboard.

  • Remove the motherboard carefully, taking care not to damage it.
  • Flip the motherboard and use a spudger to disconnect the rear camera flex cable.
  • Use tweezers to carefully remove the rear camera.
