Google Pixel XL Display Assembly Replacement

The Pixel XL's unreinforced display panel is fragile and prone to breakage, especially if it already has micro-fractures.

  • This repair involves removing and replacing the Google Pixel XL's display assembly, which includes the screen and digitizer.
  • The strong adhesive attaching the display panel to the frame makes repairs challenging.

Step 1 | Display Assembly

Heat devices can cause damage to internal components.

  • Apply heat to top edge of display with an iOpener or alternative (hair dryer, heat gun, hot plate) for two minutes.

Do not overheat the phone — risk of heat damage to display and battery.

  • Identify regions:
  • Thin adhesive lining against display panel
  • Thick adhesive
  • OLED display panel (prone to damage)
  • Display cable (can be damaged during prying)

Apply a suction cup near the warm edge.

  • Lift on the suction cup and insert an opening pick into the gap.

Do not insert more than 13 mm of the pick to avoid display assembly damage.

Reheat if necessary, or use a playing card for initial entry assistance.

Never cut deeper than 13 mm (0.5 inches) into the display — risk of damage.

  • Slide the opening clip across the top edge to slice through the adhesive.
  • Be cautious around the mesh covering the earpiece speaker, taking care not to damage or lose this component if you don't have a replacement.
  • Leave an opening pick in the edge to prevent resealing of the adhesive.

Apply iOpener to right edge for two minutes.

  • Insert opening pick near top edge, where adhesive has been sliced.
  • Guide pick around right corner, slowly.
  • Slide pick down right edge to slice through adhesive (do not insert more than 1 mm).

Damage to display assembly may occur if this precaution is ignored.

  • Repeat for left edge of phone.

Slicing too deeply can damage the display cable.

  • Heat the bottom edge with an iOpener for two minutes.
  • Insert a pick near the right edge and guide it around the corner.
  • Slide the pick along the bottom edge, slicing through the adhesive up to 8.5 mm (1/3") deep.

Step 6

Do not remove the display assembly as it is still attached by a flex cable.

  • Lift the display assembly up slightly by the right corners.
  • Use an opening pick to cut through any remaining adhesive.

Hold the display assembly firmly at the bottom end.

  • Lift the assembly upwards, then rotate it downwards to rest it upside down on the frame.

Be careful not to strain the flex cable during rotation.

Remove the two 4 mm T5 screws holding the display cable bracket.

  • Keep track of each screw, as you will need to return it to its exact original location.
  • Once the screws are removed, take out the display cable bracket.

Step 9

Do not press the middle of a press connector.

  • Use the point of a spudger to disconnect the display cable from its connector.
  • To re-attach: align and press down on one side until it clicks, then repeat on the other side.

Misaligned connectors can bend pins, causing permanent damage.

  • Remove the display assembly.
  • If your replacement display lacks a speaker grille, gently transfer the original grille to the new display using tweezers.
  • Before installing a new display, thoroughly remove all adhesive residue from the frame using a spudger or opening tool and high-concentration isopropyl alcohol.

  • If reusing the same display assembly, clean both the panel and the frame of adhesive residue before applying new adhesive.

Do not install new adhesive until you have successfully booted up your phone and tested its functionality.

  • During the initial boot-up sequence after reassembly, refrain from interacting with the screen to prevent calibration issues.
  • Once the calibration process is complete, verify touch functionality before completing the repair.
