This guide is intended to replace the top speaker in a Google Pixel Fold.

Step 1 | Safety Precautions

Step 1 image

A fully charged battery may catch fire if damaged — always allow it to discharge below 25% before proceeding.

  • Power off the phone completely.
  • Unplug all cables and connectors from the device.

Step 2 | Heat the bottom edge

Step 2 image

Apply heat to the bottom edge of the screen with an iOpener for 2 minutes.

Step 3 | Adhesive information

Step 3 image

Do not insert the opening pick beyond the dark black border surrounding the screen.

  • Note that the adhesive is located under this border.
  • Insert the pick only as deep as the border during screen removal.

Step 4 | Insert an opening pick

Step 4 image

Thumbnail 3

Apply a suction cup near the bottom center edge.

  • Pull up firmly with steady force to create a gap between the screen and frame.
  • Insert an opening pick into the gap.

Older phones may be more challenging; reapply heat if needed, or consider alternative methods:

  • Apply clear packing tape for a cracked screen.
  • Use strong tape instead of a suction cup.
  • Superglue the suction cup to the screen as a last resort.

Step 5 | Separate the bottom adhesive

Step 5 image

Slide an opening pick along the bottom edge to break the adhesive.

Be careful not to apply too much pressure, which may damage the device.

Leave the opening pick in the bottom right corner before proceeding.

Step 6 | Heat the right edge

Step 6 image

Heat a iOpener and apply it to the right edge of the screen for 2 minutes.

Step 7 | Separate the bottom right adhesive

Step 7 image

Be extremely cautious when approaching the sharp corner, as it is prone to damage.

  • Apply sufficient heat and use a gentle touch while working near the corner.
  • Position your pick to be parallel with the screen for optimal leverage.
  • Rotate the opening pick around the top left corner to carefully pry apart the adhesive.

  • Slide the opening pick towards the bottom left corner, separating the adhesive.

Step 15 | Separate the bottom left adhesive

Step 15 image

Thumbnail 2

Be extremely cautious when handling the sharp corner, as it is prone to damage.

  • Apply a generous amount of heat and maintain gentle pressure on the corner using your pick.
  • Avoid applying excessive force; instead, aim for smooth, even rotation.
  • Rotate the opening pick around the bottom left corner while maintaining as flat an angle to the screen as possible to separate the adhesive.

Step 16 | Adhesive information

Step 16 image

Locate the small adhesive strip at the top right corner of the phone.

  • Use a tool, such as an old credit card, to gently pry up one edge of the strip.
  • Continue prying along the length of the strip until it begins to separate from the phone's casing.
  • Once you've separated about half of the strip, use your fingers or a tool to carefully remove the remaining adhesive.

Step 17 | Heat the top right corner

Step 17 image

Apply heat carefully — risk of burn or damage.

  • Heat an iOpener until warm.
  • Apply the iOpener to the top right corner of the screen for two minutes.

Step 18 | Insert an opening pick

Step 18 image

Thumbnail 3

Insert a credit card or metal spudger under the right edge of the screen, near the top right corner.

  • Aim to insert it about 1-2 inches from the top edge.
  • Pry gently but firmly until the opening pick is fully seated without losing grip.

Step 19 | Separate the adhesive

Step 19 image

Thumbnail 2

Risk of screen damage; work carefully.

  • Twist the opening pick back and forth to separate the adhesive.
  • If no separation, apply more heat or adjust the pick's angle.

Step 20 | Reposition the screen

Step 20 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Separate the screen from the frame.

  • If there's resistance, use an opening pick to remove remaining adhesive.

Do not disconnect the cable connecting the screen and phone yet.

Swing the left edge of the screen up over the right edge of the phone.

Let the screen rest next to the phone before proceeding further.

Step 21 | Unfasten the bottom bracket

Step 21 image

Keep track of each screw for reinstallation purposes.

  • For this repair, use either a T3 or T4 Torx bit with standard Torx drivers (T3 or T4 bits work with 3IP Torx Plus screws).
  • Apply downward force constantly to prevent screw stripping when using your chosen driver.

Ensure the correct size of Torx plus screwdriver is used (e.g. Torx plus 3IP) for bottom bracket removal.

  • Remove the five 2.5 mm-long 3IP screws securing the bottom bracket using a Torx Plus 3IP screwdriver.

Step 22 | Remove the bottom bracket

Step 22 image

Thumbnail 2

Remove the bottom bracket using tweezers or your fingers.

  • During reassembly, ensure the bottom bracket is seated in its alignment pegs before tightening.

Step 23 | Disconnect the flip battery

Step 23 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2

Do not pry against the battery.

  • Angle your spudger under the left or right edges of the press connector.
  • Use a spudger to pry up and disconnect the flip battery press connector.

When re-attaching, align carefully and press one side until it clicks, then repeat on the other. Do not press in the middle as this can cause permanent damage if the connector is misaligned.

Step 24 | Disconnect the screen

Step 24 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2

Place the spudger under the short edge of the screen press connector facing the bottom.

Avoid touching other areas, as this may damage nearby components.

  • Pry up gently to disconnect the screen press connector.

Step 25 | Remove the screen

Step 25 image

The back of the Pixel's screen is fragile and prone to damage from scratches or dents.

  • Remove the screen.
  • To prevent damage, grip the screen by its edges only.
  • Place the screen on a soft, lint-free cloth to prevent bottom contact with other objects.

Step 26 | Reassembly information

Step 26 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

During reassembly, follow these steps:

  • Screen Reuse: Use tweezers to remove big chunks of adhesive from the perimeter.
  • Remove adhesive from the frame, including small strips at the top right corner, if present.
  • If top right adhesive is intact and sticky, it can be reused.

Use isopropyl alcohol (>90%) and a lint-free cloth to remove remaining adhesive residue.

  • Replace screen adhesive by following the provided guide.
  • If custom cut adhesive strips are not available, use Tesa Tape (or similar) as a substitute.

Step 27 | Unfasten the top bracket

Step 27 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2

Use a Torx Plus 3IP screwdriver to remove three 2.5 mm‐long screws securing the top bracket.

  • The magnet at the top right corner of phone may cause nearby screws to stick to it as you remove them.
  • For smooth insertion, use tweezers to hold a screw in place while threading in the first few threads.

Step 28 | Remove the top bracket

Step 28 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Locate the flip vibrator on the underside of the top bracket.

  • Pull the top bracket toward the left edge to disengage it from its recess.
  • Remove the top bracket.

During reassembly, ensure the top bracket's right edge is seated under its lip before aligning screw holes.

Step 29 | Remove the top speaker

Step 29 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Prying against the battery with a spudger can cause damage.

  • Insert the flat end of a spudger between the battery and bottom edge of top speaker.
  • Twist the spudger to release the adhesive securing the speakers.
  • Remove the top speaker, taking care not to touch internal components.

If reusing original adhesive, ensure it is still intact and sticky. Otherwise, follow replacement instructions.

  • If custom cut strips are unavailable, use double-sided tape (e.g., Tesa Tape) to secure the speaker to the frame.
