Google Pixel 9a Loudspeaker Replacement

Any repair may compromise the water resistance of your phone, so apply new adhesives carefully for best results.

  • Follow this guide to replace or remove the loudspeaker in your Google Pixel 9a, which may be needed if it produces crackly sounds, static, or no sound at all.

The gasket between earpiece speaker and frame offers dust and water resistance, but its effectiveness depends on phone age and condition. You'll need replacement rear cover adhesives for this repair.

Step 1 | Safety precautions

Allow the battery to discharge below 25% to prevent damage and potential fire hazard from a charged lithium-ion battery.

Unplug all cables and completely power down your Pixel device using the power button.

Step 2 | Remove the SIM card tray

Insert a SIM eject tool, bit, or straightened paper clip into the SIM card tray hole on the bottom edge of your phone.

Ensure not to insert it near the small mic hole adjacent to the SIM tray.

  • Firmly press until the tray ejects.
  • Remove the SIM card tray from your phone.

Step 3 | Heat the rear cover

Do not apply excessive heat, as this may cause damage.

  • Apply a hair dryer to the entire rear cover to soften the adhesive.
  • Heat your phone until it is only warm to the touch.

Step 4 | Apply a suction handle

Position the suction handle near the center of the rear cover's right edge, as close to the edge as feasible.

Step 5 | Insert an opening pick

Apply firm pressure to the suction handle until a clearance is achieved.

  • Position the opening pick within the created space.

Separate the rear cover from the phone's frame using a pick.

  • Use the reference picture for guidance.
  • Insert the pick no more than 3 mm when separating left and right edge adhesives to avoid damaging wireless charging coil components.

Step 7 | Separate the rear cover adhesive

Apply additional heat if needed to loosen the adhesive.

  • Use a opening pick to gently pry the rear cover away from its seal, starting at the right edge and working along the top edge.

Insert an opening pick into the initial gap near the center of the rear cover's right edge.

  • Slide the opening pick down the right edge, along the bottom edge, and up the left edge to separate the adhesive.

Step 9 | Separate the camera bezel adhesive

Insert a pick under the top of the rear cover's left edge, near the camera bezel.

  • Twist the pick while maintaining constant pressure.
  • Separate the adhesive around the camera bezel.

Step 10 | Remove the rear cover

Remove the rear cover.

  • If feeling resistance, check the perimeter of the cover.
  • Use a pick to gently pry apart remaining adhesive, if necessary.

Remove the stuck camera bezel from your phone:

  • Slide an opening pick under the camera bezel, inserting it only a few millimeters deep.
  • Pry up to remove the camera bezel.

Risk of damaging cameras if pick is inserted too deeply.

If stuck, lightly heat the camera bezel for easier removal.

Step 12 | Remove the wireless charging assembly screws

Careful not to mix up the screws — ensure they go back to their original position.

  • Remove the 16 Torx Plus 3IP screws holding the wireless charging assembly:
    • Thirteen screws measuring 5.0 mm in length
    • Three screws measuring 2.2 mm in length

Insert the point of a spudger into one of the cutouts: either the one to the right of the charge port or the one on the left edge below the camera.

  • Pry up gently until the wireless charging assembly is unclipped from both cutouts.

Careful not to damage the battery with tools.

  • Remove the battery connector cover using a Torx Plus 3IP screwdriver.
  • Look for a 1.7 mm long screw securing the cover, and turn it counterclockwise.

Use a spudger to gently pry up the battery cable press connector.

  • Pry from one edge, working your way around until the connector releases.

Step 18 | Remove the logic board screws

Remove the two 2.8 mm screws secured to the logic board using a 3IP Torx Plus screwdriver.

Step 19 | Lift the logic board

Be careful not to smudge the cameras when handling the logic board.

  • Ensure the SIM card tray has been removed before proceeding.
  • Insert a spudger point under the screw hole near the cameras and lift the board until it can be gripped with your fingers.

Step 20 | Free the bottom edge of the logic board

Do not disconnect the logic board from the frame yet.

  • Grip the skinny section of the logic board and lift until the clip near the bottom edge of the battery releases.
  • Pull the top edge of the board to the right of the frame until the charge port slides fully out of its recess.

Hold the logic board steady with one hand.

Avoid touching the camera lenses or connectors.

  • Apply a suction handle to the phone's screen.
  • Lay the logic board down flat on your work surface, taking care not to strain the screen cable.

Remove the Torx Plus 3IP screw using a Torx Plus 3IP screwdriver.

  • The screw is located near the screen cable cover and has a length of 1.7 mm.
  • Gently pry off the screen cable cover once the screw is removed.

Insert the flat end of a spudger under the plastic tab on the right side of the loudspeaker.

  • Twist the spudger to pry up and unclip the loudspeaker.

Reassembly of your phone begins now.

  • Follow these steps in reverse order to reattach parts.
  • Be sure to properly secure all components and fasteners.

  • Position the loudspeaker at a slight downward angle, ensuring the speaker gasket fits within its designated cutout.
  • Loudspeaker: Press down firmly until it clicks into place.

Step 31 | Check the thermal pads

Locate the logic board thermal pads, which can be found either on the bottom of the board or attached to their respective mounting points on the frame.

  • Inspect the condition of the pads for any signs of damage, such as rips or tears.
  • If the pads are damaged, proceed with the next five steps to replace them.
  • Otherwise, skip ahead five steps and continue with the repair process.

Step 32 | Remove the thermal pads

Scrape up and remove damaged thermal pads with the flat end of a spudger.

Soak a coffee filter in high-concentration (greater than 90%) isopropyl alcohol.

  • Gently place the soaked filter over the area with remaining thermal pad residue.
  • Absorb and remove as much of the residue as possible.

Thermal pads are delicate and may be misaligned when placed; ensure proper placement for adequate heat dissipation.

  • Remove the textured liner from the smaller thermal pad.
  • Smaller thermal pad: Carefully place onto the board, using the provided photo as a reference to ensure accurate alignment.
  • Press down lightly on the entire surface of the pad with the flat end of a spudger or your finger to secure it without deforming it.

Secure the thermal pad by pressing down firmly.

  • Lift out the remaining liners from the top of the thermal pad slowly.
  • If the thermal pad starts to lift, lay it back down and press again.

Apply the remaining thermal pad using the same process as before.

  • Refer to the provided photo for alignment guidance.

Prop your phone up with the suction handle.

  • Position the logic board against the frame.
  • The screen cable should be near its connector.

Step 38 | Connect the screen cable

Press the screen cable press connector over its socket.

  • Apply gentle pressure with a fingertip to one side.
  • Release pressure, then apply it to the other side.
  • The connector will click into place when secure.

Hook the bottom edge of the screen cable cover with tweezers.

Lay the cover down flat in its intended position.

Insert the 3IP Torx Plus screwdriver into the screw head and turn clockwise.

Use a small amount of torque to avoid damaging the surrounding material.

Ensure the 1.7 mm long screw is fully seated, securing the screen cable cover in place.

Handle the logic board carefully to avoid smudging the cameras.

  • Position the logic board upside down in its recess.
  • Release the suction cup and set your phone screen facing downwards.

Insert the logic board, taking care not to trap the battery cable underneath.

  • Gently bend the battery cable out of the way if necessary.
  • Push the logic board toward the bottom and press the charging port down until it snaps into place.
  • Press the center of the logic board's bottom edge, engaging the clip near the battery.

Align the logic board by gently pushing it into place, ensuring that the cameras sit flat against their designated positions.

  • Push down on the top edge of the logic board to secure it in its recess.
  • Verify that both cameras are properly seated and not tilted at an angle.

Tighten the logic board screws using a 3IP Torx Plus screwdriver.

  • Lay the logic board flat and ensure nothing is underneath it.
  • Tighten the two 2.8 mm screws firmly in place.

Remove the adhesive pieces around the rear cameras using a spudger.

Use high-concentration (≥90%) isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth or coffee filter to clean any residue.

Remove the clear liner from the inner housing adhesive.

  • Lay the liner around the camera holes, using the cutouts for the small silver pads as a guide.
  • Use a spudger to firmly push down on each piece of adhesive and secure it in place.

If the adhesive starts to pull up with the liner, lay it back in place and resecure it before proceeding.

  • Remove the colored liner by pulling the tab at the top edge.

Press each of the six inner housing adhesives firmly with a spudger.

These may lift easily when removing the liners, ensure secure attachment.

Expose the adhesive by peeling down the top half of the large, clear liner.

Do not fully remove the liner at this stage.

Note that the adhesive is very sticky and cannot be moved after application.

  • Lay the adhesive along the bottom edge of the liner, with the clear liner facing down.
  • Use the frame's lip to help align the top edge of the adhesive.
  • Gently press down on the top corners with your fingers to secure the adhesive in place.

Always use high-concentration (>90%) isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth (or coffee filter) when cleaning the camera bezel and matching area on the rear cover to prevent damage.

  • Wipe down the camera bezel using a lint-free cloth or coffee filter with high-concentration isopropyl alcohol.
  • Clean any remaining adhesive residue from the rear cover's corresponding spot.

  • Apply the adhesive to the top of the camera bezel and secure it in place.

  • Press the bezel into place using your fingers and apply even pressure around its edges.

The adhesive will secure the camera bezel firmly in position.

Use the flat end of a spudger to scrape up and remove old adhesive from the back cover.

  • Look for five small, oval-shaped pieces of adhesive and remove them completely.
  • If some are stuck to the phone frame, gently pry them loose with the spudger.

Wipe down with high-concentration isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth or coffee filter to remove adhesive residue.

  • Ensure the cleaning solution is above 90% concentration.
  • Use gentle, even strokes to clean all affected areas.

  • Remove the clear liner from the inner adhesive on the back cover.
  • Lay the adhesive along the bottom edge of the back cover, ensuring it covers the camera bezel cutout.

Use a spudger or your fingers to firmly press down on each of the five small adhesives.

  • Secure them to the back cover.
  • Pick up the remaining liner and slowly peel it away.
  • If adhesives lift with the liner, lay it back down and re-press with your spudger.

Use the point of a spudger to gently lift and remove the plastic liners from the adhesive surrounding the rear cameras.

  • If the adhesive starts to peel up with the liner, carefully lay it back in place and use your spudger to re-secure it.
