Google Pixel 9a Battery Replacement

  • Replace your battery if it no longer holds a charge or dies unexpectedly.
  • If your battery is swollen, take proper precautions to avoid injury.

You'll need:

  • A replacement battery
  • Rear cover adhesives

Note: This repair may compromise the water resistance of your phone. To retain water resistance, apply new adhesives accurately and ensure clean mating surfaces.

Step 1 | Safety precautions

Let the battery drain completely before proceeding, as a charged lithium-ion battery may be prone to catching fire upon damage.

  • Ensure all cables are disconnected from the phone.

Step 2 | Heat the rear cover

Extreme heat can damage the rear cover, screen, or battery.

  • Use a hair dryer to heat the entire rear cover until it is only just hot to the touch.
  • Heating the rear cover will soften the adhesive, making separation easier.

Step 3 | Apply a suction handle

Position the suction handle about 1 inch from the right edge of the rear cover, as close to the edge as feasible.

Step 4 | Insert an opening pick

Apply firm pressure to the suction handle until a slight separation appears between the cover and frame.

  • Guide the pointed end of an opening pick into the newly formed gap.

Step 5 | Adhesive information

Locate the rear cover's adhesive perimeter.

  • Use the provided reference picture for guidance.

When separating left or right edge adhesives, insert pick no more than 3mm to avoid damaging the wireless charging coil and its graphite film.

Step 6 | Separate the rear cover adhesive

Apply additional heat if needed before attempting separation.

  • Start at the right edge with the opening pick, working up and over the top right corner.
  • Continue along the top edge to release the adhesive holding the rear cover in place.

Insert a pick into the initial gap at the right edge of the rear cover.

  • Slide the pick down the right edge, then along the bottom edge.
  • Continue up the left edge to separate the adhesive.

Step 8 | Separate the camera bezel adhesive

Position the opening pick near the camera bezel, at the top of the rear cover's left edge.

  • Apply gentle twisting motion while maintaining constant pressure.
  • The goal is to loosen adhesive around the camera bezel.

Remove the rear cover.

If encountering resistance, revisit the perimeter and use a pick to gently release any stubborn adhesive.

Step 10 | Remove the camera bezel

Risk of damaging cameras if not careful.

  • Insert an opening pick only a few millimeters under the camera bezel.
  • Pry up gently to remove it, taking care not to damage the cameras.
  • If stuck, lightly heat the camera bezel for assistance.

Step 11 | Remove the wireless charging assembly screws

Remove the wireless charging assembly using a Torx Plus 3IP screwdriver.

  • Locate the 16 screws: 13 x 5.0 mm and 3 x 2.2 mm.
  • Keep track of each screw to avoid damaging your phone during reassembly.

Step 12 | Unclip the wireless charging assembly

Insert the pointed end of a spudger into one of the cutouts beside the charge port.

  • Pry gently until the wireless charging assembly becomes loose and unclipped from both cutouts.
  • One cutout is located to the right of the charge port, and the other is on the left edge below the camera.

Step 13 | Remove the wireless charging assembly

Disconnect and remove the wireless charging assembly.

Do not risk damaging the battery when removing its connector.

  • Use a Torx Plus 3IP screwdriver to remove the screw securing the battery connector cover, which is approximately 1.7 mm long.

Step 15 | Remove the battery connector cover

Use tweezers to gently lift and remove the battery connector cover.

  • Use a spudger to gently pry up the battery cable press connector.
  • Disconnect the connector when it is free from its socket.

Step 17 | Move the side button cable

Delicate side button cable — be extremely cautious not to damage.

  • Peel up the side button cable with your fingernail or a spudger.
  • Gently flip it over the phone's edge.
  • Use careful technique when using a spudger to avoid contacting the battery.

Step 18 | Detach the battery pull tabs

When handling the battery, wear protective gear — either finger stalls, latex gloves, or rubber gloves.

  • Finger up the two plastic tabs near the bottom edge of the battery using your fingers.
  • Fold the tabs under the phone or secure them out of the way with tape to prevent warping during heating.

Step 19 | Heat the battery

Carefully read these next steps before proceeding to ensure successful battery removal.

  • Strong adhesive secures the battery in place, which can be softened by applying heat.
  • To heat the battery, use a hair dryer on High heat and Low airspeed settings for three minutes:
    • Hold the hair dryer approximately three inches from the battery and move it constantly to evenly distribute heat.
    • Avoid holding in one place for too long to prevent hotspots.
  • Alternatively, use a heat mat at 80 °C (176 °F) with your phone screen-side down for 10 minutes.

Step 20 | Secure the phone to your work surface

Secure the phone to your work surface using two F-Clamps or C-Clamps, one for each edge.

  • Use clamps with plastic or rubber pads to avoid marring the metal frame.
  • If you don't have clamps, have a friend hold the phone firmly in place.

Be careful not to clamp down on internal components. If using metal clamps, place cloth between the frame and clamp to prevent damage.

Make sure your work surface is clean and free of debris, especially under the screen.

Follow ESD precautions when securing the phone to avoid damage or electrical shock.

Step 21 | Separate the battery adhesive

Never yank on the battery pull tabs — may cause damage.

  • Pull straight up on the battery pull tabs with constant, steady pressure until the battery separates from the frame.
  • If separation does not occur after one minute of pressure, apply more heat and try again.

Never reuse a deformed or damaged battery — it's a fire hazard.

Replace with a new battery.

Alternatively:

  • If the battery pull tabs broke, or slipped out from under the battery, proceed to the next step for an alternate removal method.

Step 22 | Apply isopropyl alcohol

Exceeding the recommended amount of isopropyl alcohol may damage your screen.

  • Apply two or three drops of high-concentration (>90%) isopropyl alcohol to top right and bottom right corners of battery.
  • Wait one minute for the alcohol to soften battery adhesive.

Step 23 | Apply a suction handle to the battery

  • Attach a suction handle to the center of the battery with the arm oriented towards the right edge.
  • Insert the short edge of a plastic card into the gap between the right edge of the battery and logic board, positioning it near the top section of the battery.

Hold the suction handle firmly with both hands.

  • Pull up on the suction handle with strong force, then use a plastic card to pry under the battery.
  • Apply constant pressure and patience as it may take time for the plastic card to slide under the battery.
  • Continue holding the suction handle and guide the plastic card fully under the battery to release its adhesive.

Step 25 | Remove the battery

Use the suction handle to lift out the battery.

Reassembly of your phone begins now.

  • Proceed with the following steps to complete the process.

Step 27 | Remove the old battery adhesive

Remove the old battery adhesive using a spudger and tweezers.

  • Roll the adhesive into bigger clumps using your spudger.
  • Pick up the clumps with tweezers and peel them off slowly.

The adhesive can be difficult to remove; be patient and gentle when handling it.

Step 28 | Clean the frame

Damage to the display may occur if excessive isopropyl alcohol is applied.

  • Use a lint-free cloth or coffee filters with high-concentration (>90%) isopropyl alcohol to clean up old adhesive residue from the frame.
  • Apply isopropyl alcohol sparingly to prevent damage.

Step 29 | Apply the battery adhesive

Remove the larger, clear liner from your replacement battery adhesive.

  • Lay the battery adhesive into the battery recess.
  • Ensure the strips align with their contours on the frame.

Press the adhesive firmly into place with either your fingers or a spudger.

Be cautious when handling the side button cable, as it can be easily damaged.

  • Flip the side button cable over the frame gently to prevent it from getting stuck in the next step.

Step 33 | Install the battery

Position the battery above its recess.

  • Finger-push the battery press connector to reconnect it.
  • Lay the battery into its recess and secure it with a firm press.
  • Once in place, disconnect the battery for continued reassembly.

Step 34 | Secure the side button cable

Use your fingertip to flip the side button cable onto the battery and gently press down to secure it with its tape.

Step 35 | Remove the old adhesive

Remove the adhesive strips surrounding the rear cameras using a spudger.

  • Clean the area with a lint-free cloth or coffee filter, and high-concentration (>90%) isopropyl alcohol.
  • Remove any remaining residue from the adhesive strips.

Remove the larger clear liner from the inner housing adhesive.

  • Lay the liner around the camera holes in position.
  • Use cutouts for small silver pads to align the liner.

The adhesive may lift with the liner, so reapply and secure it with a spudger if necessary.

  • Remove the colored liner by pulling on its tab at the top edge.
  • Firmly push each piece of adhesive into place using a spudger's flat end.

Step 37 | Secure the adhesive

Press each inner housing adhesive firmly with a spudger.

Ensure adhesives are secure to prevent removal issues during liner removal.

Step 38 | Connect the battery press connector

Align the battery press connector with its socket using a gentle touch.

  • Press down firmly to secure the connection.
  • Do not force the connector into place, as this may cause damage.
  • If trouble persists, reposition the connector and try again.

  • Lay the cover down flat.

  • Use to secure 13 x 5.0 mm screws.

Take your time when removing the rear cover adhesive, as this will help ensure an even bond.

Be extremely careful not to damage the battery or fragile components near the perimeter of the frame.

  • Use a spudger and tweezers to scrape up and remove old rear cover adhesive from the phone's perimeter.
  • If you get a large piece, use your fingers to pull long sections straight out in the opposite direction of the adhesive.

Step 45 | Clean the frame

High concentration isopropyl alcohol can damage certain materials.

  • Apply high-concentration (>90%) isopropyl alcohol to a lint-free cloth or coffee filter.
  • Gently wipe down the areas of the frame where adhesive was present.

Step 46 | Find the adhesive orientation

Position the rear cover adhesive over the frame to ensure correct placement.

  • Hold the adhesive above the frame to determine its orientation.
  • Use the camera cutout in the liner for reference.

Incorrect application may require discarding and reapplying new adhesive.

  • Do not remove liner completely at this stage.

Take your time when aligning the adhesive with the frame as it's very sticky and can't be moved once applied.

  • Lay the exposed top edge of the adhesive onto the frame, folding the larger, clear liner towards the bottom of the phone for access.
  • Use the lip of the frame to help align the adhesive.
  • Gently press down on the top corners with your fingers to secure the adhesive once properly aligned.

Press the adhesive into place slowly, peeling away the large liner as it's applied.

Ensure the adhesive is evenly distributed to prevent air bubbles or poor adhesion.

  • Use a spudger to scrape off old adhesive from the camera bezel and its corresponding spot on the rear cover.

Wipe the camera bezel and the matching area on the rear cover with a lint-free cloth or coffee filter, soaked in high-concentration (>90%) isopropyl alcohol.

  • Remove all remaining adhesive pieces, including five small oval-shaped ones.
  • If some adhesives stick to the phone frame, gently pry them loose with the spudger.

  • Lay the adhesive onto the bottom of the back cover, ensuring the cutout aligns with the camera bezel.

  • Use a spudger or your fingers to firmly push down on each of the five small adhesives.
  • Slowly remove the remaining liner, taking care not to lift any of the adhesives with it.
  • If adhesives start peeling up, lay them back down and secure again using your spudger.

Use a spudger to carefully lift and remove the plastic liners from the adhesive around the rear cameras.

  • If the liner starts to separate, lay it back in place and secure it again with your spudger.
