Google Pixel 9 Battery Replacement

This guide was written by iFixit staff and has not been endorsed by Google.

Replace the battery in your Google Pixel 9 with this guide. Note that lithium-ion batteries have a limited lifespan, so if your phone no longer holds a charge or shuts down unexpectedly, it may be time for replacement.

  • Check if your battery is swollen and take precautions if necessary.
  • You'll need to clamp your phone in place; clamps are recommended but a second person can secure the phone if you don't have clamps.

Note that this repair may compromise water resistance. Reapplication of rear cover adhesive is crucial for retaining water resistance, and results will depend on how well it's reapplied.

Step 1 | Prepare your Pixel for disassembly

Step 1 image

A charged lithium-ion battery may catch fire if damaged, so let the Pixel's battery fully drain to 0%.

  • Disconnect all cables from your phone.

Step 2 | Adhesive information

Apply adhesive to secure back glass to frame.

Insert tool no more than 3 mm under back glass to avoid damaging internal components.

  • Mark opening pick tip with permanent marker 3 mm from edge for reference.

Suction cup may not stick well if screen or back glass is badly cracked.

  • Lay packing tape strips over glass to protect hands and ease disassembly.
  • Ensure smooth, large area near bottom edge for suction cup attachment.

Step 3 | Apply a suction handle

Step 3 image

Lightly twist the opening pick at the bottom edge.

  • Lift the back glass up until you can grip it with your fingers.
  • Use the opening pick to separate any remaining sections of adhesive securing the back glass.

Step 8 | Remove the back glass

Step 8 image

Remove the back glass.

  • Test your phone before sealing it up: power it on and check that it works.
  • Power it back down before continuing reassembly.
  • Use a new adhesive to prevent damage during reassembly.

Follow this guide to install your back glass.

Step 9 | Remove the upper board cover

Step 9 image

Keep track of each screw and ensure it returns to its original location.

  • The Pixel 9 uses Torx Plus screws, but standard Torx bits also work.
  • Apply constant, downward force when screwing to prevent stripping.
  • Use a 3IP Torx Plus driver to remove the single 5.4 mm-long screw securing the upper board cover.

Thumbnail 3

Inspect the logic board thermal pad for damage.

  • If undamaged, proceed to next step.
  • If damaged, use flat end of spudger to scrape it off.

Always handle the logic board with static protection – risk of damage from static electricity.

  • Apply isopropyl alcohol (≥ 90%) and microfiber cloth to clean residue from frame and logic board.
  • Apply a new thermal pad to its designated spot on the frame.

Step 30 | Detach the battery pull tabs

Step 30 image

Thumbnail 3

Prevent damage to plastic parts by carefully handling the battery tabs.

  • Peel up the plastic tabs near the bottom edge of the battery with your fingers.
  • Fold the tabs under the phone or secure them out of the way using tape.
  • Wear finger stalls for a secure grip on the battery pull tabs, or use rubber gloves as an alternative.

Step 31 | Heat the battery

Step 31 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Carefully read the next three steps before starting the battery removal process.

  • Strong strips of adhesive secure the battery to the frame, which will be softened by heating.
  • Use a hair dryer on High heat and Low speed settings, holding it 3 inches from the battery, for 3 minutes.
  • Evenly spread the heat over the entire surface of the battery during this time.
  • Alternatively, use a 70 °C (158 °F) heat mat with your phone placed screen side down for 10 minutes.

Step 32 | Secure the phone to your work surface

Step 32 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2

Secure the phone firmly using F-Clamps or C-Clamps with plastic or rubber pads on your work surface.

  • Ensure nothing is under the phone before securing it by the raised lip of the frame only.
  • Position the battery pull tabs so they're accessible after securing the phone in place.

Follow ESD precautions when working with the device.

  • If no clamps are available, have a friend hold the phone firmly in place as an alternative.

Step 33 | Separate the battery adhesive

Step 33 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Never reuse a deformed or damaged battery - it's a fire hazard.

  • Apply steady pressure to the battery pull tabs and pull straight up until the battery separates from the frame.
  • If the battery doesn't separate after one minute, apply more heat and try again.

Remove a damaged or deformed battery immediately.

Continue with reassembly instructions in seven steps if the battery was successfully removed.

If the pull tab broke or slipped out, proceed to the next step for an alternate removal method.

Step 34 | Apply isopropyl alcohol

Step 34 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2

Excessive use of isopropyl alcohol can damage your screen.

  • Apply 2-3 drops of isopropyl alcohol (greater than 90%) to the top corners of the battery.

Step 35

Step 35 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2

Apply isopropyl alcohol (> 90%) to bottom corners of the battery using two or three drops.

Wait one minute for the adhesive to soften before proceeding.

Step 36 | Apply a large suction cup

Step 36 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

  • Large suction cup: pull handle down to open.
  • Small suction cup: apply and skip two steps.
  • Fold plastic battery tabs out of the way with fingers.
  • Place large suction cup in center of battery.

Step 37

Step 37 image

Step 38

Step 38 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2

Secure phone firmly with one hand.

  • Pull suction cup towards bottom edge using strong force to lift top edge.
  • Apply constant pressure for adhesive separation.

Wait one minute; if no movement, proceed with next steps:

  • Apply 2-3 drops of alcohol to battery corners.
  • Re-attempt detachment using steady pressure.

Step 39 | Remove the battery

Step 39 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Reusing a deformed or damaged battery poses a significant fire risk.

  • Extract and discard any existing batteries with deformation or damage.
  • Remove the battery from its designated slot.
  • Detach the suction cup from the removed battery.

Ensure all components are cleared before proceeding to install a new battery.

Step 40 | Remove the old battery adhesive

Step 40 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2

Use a spudger to scrape off all the old battery adhesive from the frame.

  • Clean the area with isopropyl alcohol (>90%) and a microfiber cloth to remove any remaining adhesive residue.
  • Allow the frame to completely dry before installing a new battery.

Step 41 | Adhere the battery

Step 41 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Remove any battery cable liners and tape.

  • Expose the adhesive by removing the large plastic liner from the bottom of the battery.
  • If your battery doesn't have adhesive, apply thin double-sided tape strips to the frame where it was removed.
  • Firmly press the battery into its recess using the applied adhesive or tape.
