Do not start this repair with a fully charged battery, as it can lead to a hazardous fire.

  • Allow the Pixel's battery to drain below 25% before proceeding.
  • Unplug all cables and power down your phone completely.

Step 2 | Tape over any cracks

Cracked glass can cause injury or complicate disassembly.

  • Apply overlapping packing tape strips to cover cracked glass, but not the frame.
  • Ensure entire screen is covered for suction cup adhesion.

Wear safety glasses to protect eyes from loose glass during repair.

Step 3

Do not apply excessive heat as this may cause damage to phone components.

  • Apply heat evenly across the screen using a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate.
  • Continue heating until the screen feels almost too hot to touch, but avoid overheating.
  • Stop applying heat if the frame becomes excessively hot or shows signs of damage.

Step 4 | Apply a suction handle

Step 4 image

Do not damage the metal spring-contacts around the perimeter.

  • Mark 3 mm from the tip of the opening pick with a permanent marker.
  • Or, attach a coin to the pick with tape 3 mm from the tip.

Step 6 | Insert an opening pick

Be patient and reheat the screen if it feels stuck.

  • Use strong, steady force to pull up on the suction handle until a gap forms between the screen and frame.
  • Insert the opening pick tip under the screen, ensuring it's underneath the plastic frame attached to the display backside.

Step 7 | Separate the screen adhesive

  • If the screen feels stuck, use an opening pick to separate any remaining adhesive along the perimeter.

Step 10 | Disconnect the screen

Careful handling is required to avoid damaging nearby components.

  • Position the spudger's tip under the left edge of the screen cable press connector.
  • Pry upward to release the connection.

Remove the screen.

Step 12 | Screen information

Step 12 image

The Pixel's screen is fragile and prone to damage from minor scratches or dents.

  • Handle the screen by its edges to minimize risk of damage.
  • Place the screen on a soft, lint-free cloth when working with it to prevent contact with foreign objects.

Step 13 | Remove all the old screen adhesive

Step 13 image

Careful not to damage fragile components near the frame's edge.

  • Use a spudger to scrape off old screen adhesive from the frame's perimeter, rolling it onto itself for easier removal.
  • Take your time as this may require patience and multiple passes.

Ensure the frame is completely clean of adhesive residue using a microfiber cloth with isopropyl alcohol.

  • Allow the frame to dry completely before continuing.

Step 14 | Orient the adhesive

Check if new screen has pre-installed adhesive.

  • If yes, skip to step 7.
  • Otherwise, proceed with installing new screen adhesive:
    • Inspect adhesive for correct orientation on phone frame.
    • Hold adhesive over phone to align it properly.
    • Ensure blue liner is facing up and clear liner is at bottom.
    • The adhesive should fit into the corresponding groove on frame's perimeter.
    • Cutouts in blue liner match spring contacts on frame.

Step 15 | Apply the screen adhesive

Step 15 image

Expose the adhesive by peeling down the top half of the clear liner.

  • Leave the rest of the liner intact for now.

Step 16
