Google Pixel 9 Pro Battery Replacement

  • The battery in your Google Pixel 9 Pro has a limited lifespan and may need to be replaced if it no longer holds a charge.
  • If the battery is swollen, take necessary precautions before proceeding.
  • This repair requires clamping your phone or having an assistant secure it.
  • Replacement rear cover adhesive will be needed for this procedure.
  • Note: This repair may compromise your phone's water resistance; reapplying the rear cover adhesive correctly is crucial to maintaining water resistance.

Step 1 | Safety precautions

Allow the battery to completely discharge before proceeding, as a charged lithium-ion battery may catch fire if damaged.

  • Disconnect and unplug all external cables from the device.

Apply adhesive around the perimeter of the rear cover to secure it to the frame.

  • Separate the adhesive by inserting a tool no more than 3 mm under the rear cover.
  • To avoid damaging internal components, measure and mark a 3 mm opening on your pick with a permanent marker or tape a coin to it for reference.

Attach a suction handle to the bottom edge of the rear cover, positioning it as close to the edge as feasible.

Apply firm pressure to the suction handle using a gentle rocking motion.

  • Continue until a small gap forms between the rear cover and the device body.
  • Insert the tip of an opening pick into the gap created.

Step 5 | Separate the rear cover adhesive

Insert an opening pick into the bottom edge.

  • Slide it gently along the edge to break the adhesive bond.
  • Maintain a depth of no more than 3 mm to avoid damage.

Insert the opening pick into the left edge of the device and gently slide it upwards, along the top edge, to loosen the adhesive.

Hold the pick vertically and slide it down the right edge of the device.

  • Gently pry apart any remaining adhesive.

Do not remove the rear cover entirely yet — the right edge is connected by a ribbon cable.

  • Lift the left edge of the rear cover using the suction handle and swing it over the right edge, like opening a book.
  • If stuck, check for remaining adhesive along the perimeter and use your opening pick to separate it.
  • Prop up the rear cover with the suction handle to access the ribbon cable near the top right corner.

Step 9 | Remove the wireless charging assembly

Record the location of each screw to ensure proper reinstallation.

  • The Pixel 9 Pro uses Torx Plus screws; standard Torx bits will also function, but be cautious of screw stripping when applying constant downward force.
  • To remove the wireless charging assembly, use a Torx Plus 3IP screwdriver:
    • Remove four 5.4 mm-long screws with Torx bit.
    • Remove one 1.5 mm-long screw, which is non-magnetic and may require tweezers for removal.

Take extra care when removing the wireless charging assembly to avoid damaging the spring contacts underneath.

  • Remove the wireless charging assembly using tweezers or your fingers.

Step 11 | Disconnect the rear cover

Insert opening pick under rear cover press connector, near left edge.

  • Pry upwards to release connector.

  • Remove the cable cover using a Torx Plus 3IP screwdriver.
    • Loosen and remove one 2.3 mm screw.
    • Loosen and remove one 5.4 mm screw.

Remove the cable cover using either tweezers or your fingers.

Use a spudger to carefully pry the battery press connector upwards, starting from the right edge.

Remove the mmWave antenna cover using a Torx Plus 3IP screwdriver.

Ensure correct Torx bit size to avoid stripping the screw head.

Use a spudger to gently pry up the mmWave antenna cover by inserting its tip under the bottom left corner clip.

Pull the cover towards the bottom of the phone from the right edge.

During reassembly, ensure the cover is securely clipped in place.

  • Insert the two tabs on the top corners under their recesses in the frame.
  • Pull the cover down to clip it into place.

Step 19 | Disconnect the 5G mmWave antenna

Locate the mmWave antenna press connector in the top right corner of the logic board.

  • Pry up the connector using the point of a spudger.
  • Gently pull the connector away from the logic board to complete disconnection.

Use the tip of a spudger to carefully lift and release the front-facing camera press connector.

Step 21 | Remove the 5G mmWave antenna screw

Avoid touching the cameras as their sensitivity may be compromised.

  • Hold the front facing camera cable aside using a gentle grip.
  • Use a Torx Plus 3IP screwdriver to remove the mmWave antenna screw.

Step 22 | Remove the 5G mmWave antenna

Remove the mmWave antenna using tweezers or your fingers.

  • When reinstalling, ensure the mmWave antenna is situated under the front-facing camera cable.

Disconnect the press connector near the bottom left corner using the flat end of a spudger.

  • Use the point of a spudger to disconnect the next press connector just to the right.

Insert the opening pick under the top edge of the press connector, near the bottom right corner of the logic board.

Be careful not to damage the small, surface-mounted components to the right of the connector.

  • Pry up and disconnect the press connector using the pick.

Use a Torx Plus 3IP screwdriver to remove the two 4.3 mm-long screws.

  • The screws secure the charging board cover.

Locate the charging board cover and grasp it with your fingers.

Pull the right edge of the cover toward the top of the phone to release the left side clip.

  • Flip the cover away from the charging board.
  • Expose the press connectors for access.

Take extra care when handling the charging board to avoid damaging its surface-mounted components.

  • Use the point of a spudger to carefully pry up and disconnect the three press connectors on the top edge of the charging board.

Remove the Torx Plus 3IP screwdriver and use it to unscrew the two 2.5mm screws on the bottom of the right interconnect cable.

Remove the Torx Plus 3IP screw from the antenna cover using the provided tool.

  • The screw is located in the top left corner and has a length of 5.4 mm.

Remove the cover with tweezers or your fingers.

Remove the autofocus sensor press connector using a spudger.

  • Pry the connector up from the top left corner.
  • Move the cable out of the way to access the metal antenna connector underneath.

  • Insert one arm of the angled tweezers under the metal neck of the antenna connector.
  • Lift straight up to disconnect the connector.
  • Be careful not to damage the socket or surrounding components.

  • To reconnect, hold the connector over its socket and press down gently with a finger or a spudger.
  • The connector should "snap" into place; if not, reposition the head and try again.

Step 35 | Remove the logic board

Use a spudger to pry up the top edge of the logic board.

Be careful not to snag the front facing camera and battery cables

  • Grip the right side of the logic board and remove it.

During reassembly, hold the front facing camera cable out of the way and lower the logic board into place.

Check the logic board thermal pad condition.

  • If undamaged, skip this step.
  • If damaged, scrape it up with a spudger and remove.
  • Use isopropyl alcohol (90%+) to clean residue from frame and logic board.

Apply a new thermal pad to its spot on the frame.

Step 37 | Detach the battery pull tabs

Peel up plastic tabs near bottom edge with fingers.

  • Fold or tape out of way to prevent warping during heating.
  • Prioritize solid grip; wear finger stalls
  • (Alternative: use rubber gloves)

Step 38 | Heat the battery

Read and understand the next three steps before proceeding.

  • Adhesive is present, so heating the battery will make removal easier.
  • Use a hair dryer on High heat, Low speed settings for 3 minutes, 3 inches from the battery's surface.
  • Alternatively, use a heat mat at 70 °C (158 °F) for 10 minutes with phone screen side down.

Step 39 | Secure the phone to your work surface

Firmly secure the phone to your work surface using F‐Clamps or C‐Clamps, ensuring nothing is under it.

  • Only secure by the raised lip of the frame, avoiding internal components.
  • Maintain ESD precautions throughout this process.

For accessibility:

  • Pull tabs out from under your phone so they're accessible.
  • If necessary, have a friend hold the phone firmly in place.

Use clamps with plastic or rubber pads to prevent scuffing, or take extra care if this is not possible.

Step 40 | Separate the battery adhesive

Do not reuse a deformed or damaged battery as it is a fire hazard.

  • Pull straight up on both battery pull tabs with constant, steady pressure until the battery separates from the frame.
  • If separation occurs after one minute of steady pressure, remove the battery. If not, apply more heat and try again.
  • Remove the battery once it has separated.

If the pull tab breaks or slips out during removal, proceed to the next step for an alternate method.

Step 41 | Apply isopropyl alcohol

Excessive use of isopropyl alcohol can damage the screen.

  • Apply 2-3 drops of isopropyl alcohol (greater than 90%) to the top corners of the battery.

Apply 2-3 drops of >90% isopropyl alcohol to the lower corners of the battery.

Allow the alcohol to sit for one minute, allowing it to soften the battery adhesive.

For battery removal, use a heavy-duty suction cup or a smaller suction handle (suction handle). If using the smaller suction handle, apply it to the bottom edge and skip ahead two steps.

  • Pull down on the large suction cup to open it.
  • Fold out the plastic battery tabs with your fingers.
  • Place the suction cup in the center of the battery.

Press the suction cup firmly onto the screen while simultaneously pulling the handle upwards.

  • Lift the plastic clip on top of the suction cup and slide it over the handle to secure them together.

Step 45 | Pry up the battery

Secure your phone firmly with one hand on a work surface.

  • Pull the suction cup towards the bottom edge of the phone using strong, steady force to lift the top edge of the battery.
  • Apply constant pressure to allow time for adhesive separation.

Wait one minute. If no movement, proceed to:

  • Apply two to three drops of alcohol to battery corners and retry with suction cup.
  • Repeat as necessary until battery detaches.

Step 46 | Remove the battery

Never reuse a deformed or damaged battery — it's a fire hazard.

Replace with a new battery.

  • Remove the battery from its recess.
  • Take off the suction cup attached to the battery.
  • If the battery pull tab is still in the recess, remove it.

Step 47 | Remove the old battery adhesive

Remove all old battery adhesive from the frame using a spudger.

  • Use a microfiber cloth and at least 90% isopropyl alcohol to clean any remaining adhesive residue.
  • Ensure the frame has completely dried before installing a replacement battery.

Remove any tape or liners from the battery cable.

  • Remove the larger plastic liner from the bottom of the battery to expose the adhesive.
  • If your battery does not have pre-installed adhesive, apply strips of thin, double-sided tape to the frame where the old adhesive was.

Firmly press the battery into its recess — risk of damage if not secured properly.
