How to Apply New Rear Cover Adhesive in Your Google Pixel 9 Pro XL

This guide applies specifically to the rear cover reattachment step following a repair.

  • Follow this procedure upon reassembly after completing any necessary repairs.

Step 1 | Remove the old rear cover adhesive

Be extremely cautious not to damage the battery or nearby fragile components.

  • Use a spudger to carefully scrape off old rear cover adhesive from the frame perimeter.
  • Rinse with isopropyl alcohol and a microfiber cloth after removing all residue.
  • Ensure the entire area is spotless for proper adhesive bonding.

Check if a new rear cover is being installed – skip ahead.

  • Alternatively: Remove old adhesive & residue from the rear cover's underside using the same method as before.

Step 3 | Apply the new rear cover adhesive

Remove the clear liner from the rear cover adhesive.

Adhesive application is critical; ensure correct placement.

  • Place the adhesive over the cameras, using the frame's lip for guidance.
  • The large cutout should be positioned accordingly to avoid reapplication.

Step 5 | Secure the rear cover adhesive

Use the flat end of a spudger to firmly press around the perimeter of the adhesive and secure it to the frame.

Step 6 | Remove the first liner

Hold the top left corner of the large blue liner firmly with tweezers or your fingers.

  • Remove the liner from the frame.
  • If adhesive peels up, lay it back and use a spudger to secure it.

Press the flat end of the spudger firmly around the perimeter of the adhesive to secure it.

Step 8 | Prop up the rear cover

Remove liners from the underside of the rear cover, around the camera area.

  • Apply a suction handle to the back of the rear cover, near the center of its right edge.
  • Prop up the rear cover, positioning it just to the right of your phone.

Step 9 | Reconnect the rear cover

  • Reattach the rear cover press connector to the logic board.
  • Place the cable cover into its correct position.

Use a Torx Plus 3IP screwdriver to install two 5.2 mm screws securing the cable cover.

  • Test your phone now by powering it on and checking that it works.
  • Power down before continuing reassembly.

Step 11 | Remove the remaining liners

Grasp one of the pull tabs on the left side of the frame.

  • Remove the pull tab.
  • If adhesive peels up with liner, gently lay back down and use a spudger's flat end to secure.

Hold the rear cover in place using the suction handle.

  • Be careful not to damage the delicate cable.
  • Use tweezers or your fingers to remove the remaining blue liner and expose the adhesive.

Step 13 | Attach the rear cover

Place the rear cover onto the frame, then firmly press it into position.

Apply firm pressure around the entire perimeter of the rear cover to ensure it adheres properly.

  • When powering on your Pixel after repair, lay the phone flat and keep hands away from the screen.
  • Avoid contact between any objects (fingers, liners, protectors, cases) and the screen during startup.
