Any repair may compromise the water resistance of your device.

  • This guide has not been endorsed by Google and was created by iFixit staff. Learn more about our guides here.
  • The battery in your Google Pixel 9 Pro XL may need replacement if it doesn't hold a charge or dies unexpectedly due to its limited lifespan.
  • Replace the rear cover adhesive if necessary for this repair, and ensure it is reapplied correctly to maintain water resistance.
  • A swollen battery requires special precautions. If you do not have clamps, secure your phone with assistance from a second person.

Step 1 | Safety precautions

Step 1 image

Allow the Pixel's battery to drain completely to prevent a potential fire hazard.

Step 29 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Peel up the plastic tabs near the bottom edge of the battery using your fingers.

  • Fold the tabs under the phone or tape them out of the way to prevent warping during heating.
  • Finger stalls will help you grip the battery pull tabs securely in the next steps. If unavailable, use rubber gloves instead.

Step 30 | Heat the battery

Step 30 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Heating the battery will soften its adhesive, making removal easier.

  • Use a hair dryer on High heat and Low speed settings to heat the battery for three minutes at 3 inches distance.
  • Alternatively, use a heat mat at 70 °C (158 °F) with your phone placed screen side down for 10 minutes.

Step 31 | Secure the phone to your work surface

Step 31 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2

Firmly secure the phone to your work surface using two hands.

  • Ensure nothing is under the phone before securing it.
  • Secure the phone by its raised lip, avoiding internal components.

Position the battery pull tabs for easy access.

Use F‐Clamps or C‐Clamps with plastic or rubber pads to secure the phone.

  • Apply two clamps: one for the top edge and one for the bottom edge.
  • Follow ESD precautions when handling the phone in this manner.

If no clamps are available, have a friend hold the phone firmly in place.

Step 32 | Separate the battery adhesive

Step 32 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Never reuse a deformed or damaged battery — it's a fire hazard.

  • Pull tabs may require constant pressure for 1 minute to separate from frame.
  • If stuck, apply more heat and try again.

Do not reuse deformed or damaged batteries.

Continue if battery is successfully removed; proceed to reassembly instructions 7 steps ahead.

  • Otherwise, refer to the next step for an alternate removal method.

Step 33 | Apply isopropyl alcohol

Step 33 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2

Do not exceed the recommended amount of isopropyl alcohol — risk of screen damage.

  • Apply exactly two or three drops of strong isopropyl alcohol (>90%) to each top corner of the battery.

Step 34

Step 34 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2

Apply isopropyl alcohol (≥ 90% concentration) to the bottom corners of the battery.

  • Use two or three drops only.
  • Allow one minute for the alcohol to soften the adhesive.

Step 35 | Apply a large suction cup

Step 35 image

Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Secure the phone firmly to your work surface with one hand.

  • Pull the suction cup towards the bottom of the phone using strong, steady force to lift the top edge of the battery.
  • Apply constant pressure for at least one minute to allow time for adhesive separation.
  • If the battery remains stuck, apply two to three drops of alcohol to the corners and try again.

It may take multiple cycles of alcohol and steady pressure to detach the battery completely.

Step 38 | Remove the battery

Step 38 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Do not use a deformed or damaged battery — risk of fire.

Replace the battery with a new one.

  • Remove the battery from its recess.
  • Take off the suction cup that holds it in place.
  • If the battery pull tab is still in the recess, remove it.

Step 39 | Remove the old battery adhesive

Step 39 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2

Use a spudger to scrape off all the old battery adhesive from the frame.

  • Once removed, use isopropyl alcohol (greater than 90%) and a microfiber cloth to clean any remaining adhesive residue.
  • Allow the frame to dry completely before installing a new battery.

Step 40 | Remove the battery liners

Step 40 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2

Remove all tape and liners from the battery cable.

  • Expose the adhesive on the battery by removing its large plastic liner.

Step 41 | Adhere the battery

Step 41 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Temporarily reconnect the battery for proper fit and alignment.

Firmly press the battery into its recess using the provided adhesive.

Ensure the battery is fully disconnected before resuming reassembly.
