Google Pixel 8a Wireless Charging Assembly Replacement

Any repair may compromise the water resistance of your phone, so proper adhesive application is crucial for maintaining this feature.

Step 1 | Prepare your Pixel for disassembly

A charged battery may catch fire if damaged, so let it drain below 25%.

  • Unplug all cables from the phone.
  • Press and hold the power button and volume up button simultaneously to shut down the phone.

Do not insert tools more than 3mm from the edge.

  • When working near cameras, avoid using tools under the camera bumps.
  • Keep tools centered to prevent damage to phone internals.

Step 3 | Insert an opening tool

Identify your opening tool's two ends.

  • Use the flat end during the opening process, angling it so the tool's sharp edge is pointing upwards.
  • Pick a sharp corner of the tool and insert its edge between the back cover and frame to separate the adhesive.

Step 4 | Separate the perimeter adhesive

Slide the opening tool along the bottom edge of the device.

  • Gently pry apart the back cover, taking care to avoid damaging any surrounding components.

Insert an opening tool into the bottom right corner.

  • Move the tool along the right edge until you reach the camera bump.
  • Exit from under the back cover.

Insert the opening tool into the top right corner of the back cover, just above the camera bump.

  • Slide the tool along the top edge to the top left corner.
  • Stop at the point just above the camera bump.
  • Remove the tool from under the back cover.

Position the opening tool along the left edge of the back cover.

  • Place the tool just below the camera bump.
  • Slide the tool down the edge to break the adhesive.

Step 8 | Separate the camera bump adhesive

Locate the adhesive strip above the camera bump.

  • Insert an opening pick under the top left corner of the back cover until it is near the top edge of the camera bump.
  • The pick can be inserted more than 3 mm along the top edge.
  • Slide the pick to the right, stopping when it reaches the right edge of the cameras.

Remove the adhesive tape located at the bottom of the camera bump.

  • Carefully insert a flat-edged tool (opening pick) into the gap between the back cover and the phone, positioning it just below the camera bump.
  • On the opposite side, repeat this process with a second opening pick, maintaining alignment with the first one.

Be cautious not to bend the back cover.

  • Pry up the back cover using both picks, applying constant pressure.
  • If stubborn, rotate side-to-side for additional adhesive release.
  • If still stuck, apply gentle heat (e.g., hair dryer or iOpener) to the camera bump area.

Step 11 | Remove the back cover

Remove the back cover.

  • Test the phone by powering it on and checking functionality.
  • Power down the phone before continuing with reassembly.
  • Apply new adhesive and install the back cover according to this guide.

Step 12 | Separate the flash unit

Heat only until the flash unit is warm to the touch to avoid damage.

  • Use a hair dryer, iOpener, or heat gun to warm the flash unit.
  • Focus on softening the adhesive, do not apply excessive heat that may harm surrounding components.

Avoid damaging the flash cable, as it is prone to tearing.

  • Lift the flash away from its adhesive with a pick under the top edge.
  • Separate carefully to avoid damaging the flash cable.

During reassembly, refer to the guide for replacing flash adhesives.

Step 14 | Unclip the logic board cover

Keep track of each screw and ensure it returns to its original location.

  • The Pixel 8a uses Torx Plus screws, but standard Torx bits will work.
  • Apply constant, downward force when using a Torx bit to prevent stripping.

Do not use regular Torx drivers as they may damage the screws.

  • Remove the 15 screws securing the logic board cover using a Torx Plus 3IP screwdriver.
    • Thirteen 4.3 mm-long screws.
    • Two 1.9 mm-long screws.

Damage to spring contacts around phone perimeter may result in loss of functionality.

  • Insert an opening pick under the bottom right corner of the logic board cover, prying up to release the clip.
  • Insert a spudger tip into the notch near the top right corner of the logic board cover (below the screw hole), prying up to release the clip.

  • Lift the top edge of the logic board cover slowly and carefully.
  • Thread the flash unit through its cutout.
  • When reassembling, thread the flash unit through its cutout as you lower the logic board cover into place to avoid pinching or damaging the unit.

Step 17 | Remove the wireless charging assembly

Remove the logic board cover, taking care not to damage the attached wireless charging coil.
