Google Pixel 8a Screen Replacement

This guide has not been endorsed by Google and may compromise the water resistance of your device.

  • Follow this guide to replace a cracked or unresponsive screen on your Google Pixel 8a.
  • To restore fingerprint reader functionality, transfer it from the original screen to the replacement screen and recalibrate if necessary.
  • A genuine Google replacement screen comes with the fingerprint reader attached; otherwise, you'll need additional replacement screen adhesives for this repair.

Step 1 | Prepare your Pixel for disassembly

Let the Pixel's battery drain below 25% before starting this repair, as a charged lithium-ion battery may catch fire if damaged.

  • Unplug all cables from the phone.
  • Completely power off the phone.
  • Press and hold the power button and volume up button simultaneously to access the shutdown menu.

Step 2 | Tape over any cracks

Glass shards can cause injury, so apply packing tape carefully.

  • Cover the cracked glass with overlapping strips of packing tape until the entire screen is covered.
  • Avoid applying tape to the phone's frame.

Wear safety glasses to protect your eyes from loose glass particles.

Step 3 | Soften the top edge adhesive

Phone may be damaged by excessive heat.

  • Apply heat to top edge of screen using a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate until almost too hot to touch.
  • Monitor temperature and stop heating if frame becomes too hot to handle.
  • Be cautious not to overheat the phone, as battery and plastic components can be damaged by heat.

Step 4 | Insert your tool under the screen

Attach a suction handle to the center of the top edge of the screen.

Be cautious of damaging the front-facing camera when using a tool.

  • Reheat the screen if stuck during insertion, as this will help loosen any adhesives.
  • Insert the Jimmy tip into the left earpiece speaker cutout, no deeper than 2 mm.
  • A Jimmy or similar small metal tool with a thin, rigid edge can be used for this step.
  • Pull the suction handle firmly and steadily upwards to create a seal under the glass.
  • Firmly press the Jimmy into the cutout and lower it slowly until the tip slides under the glass.

Insert the tip of an opening pick under the screen.

  • Remove the Jimmy.

Step 7 | Separate the screen adhesive

Insert pick no more than 2mm deep to avoid damaging front-facing camera.

  • Slide pick back and forth along top edge of screen to release adhesive.

Do not insert your pick more than 3mm deep, as it may damage internal components.

  • Mark a permanent marker at 3mm from the tip of the pick.
  • Continue sliding the pick around the phone's edge to separate remaining adhesive.

Careful not to strain the screen cable.

  • Swing the right edge of the screen open.
  • Lay it over the left edge of the .

Step 10 | Disconnect the screen

Move the flap of graphite film away from the screen connector.

Hold one hand above the display bracket when lifting it, as it can easily eject.

  • Use the tip of an angled tweezer arm to gently pry up the top edge of the display cable bracket from the center of the logic board.
  • Be extremely careful not to damage the board under the bracket's socket. Only insert the tweezers just enough to lift the bracket.

Remove the display cable bracket.

Insert the tip of a spudger or clean fingernail under the top edge of the display cable press connector and pry straight up.

  • To reconnect, align the press connector over the socket and gently press down on one side until it clicks into place.
  • Then, press down on the other side. It may require a few attempts to properly align the connector.

  • Remove the screen cable by gently pulling it away from the edge of the frame.

The Pixel's screen is fragile and prone to damage from scratches or dents.

  • Remove the screen carefully.
  • When handling the screen, grip it by its edges.
  • Place the screen on a soft, lint-free cloth to prevent damage during repairs.

Verify that the front sensor gasket is correctly positioned.

  • Check if it covers the entire sensor, ensuring a secure fit.
  • Adjust its position, moving it to align with the front sensor and orienting the smaller cutout toward the top if necessary.

Step 16 | Prepare the frame for reassembly

Be cautious not to scratch or damage the battery underneath.

  • Insert tweezers into the frame's small cutout to retrieve any loose debris.
  • Use a spudger to gently scrape away remaining adhesive from below the cutout.

Remove any remaining screen adhesive bits from the device's using a spudger and tweezers.

Use a spudger and tweezers to carefully scrape off the old adhesive around the screen's perimeter.

  • Remove any remaining fragments using the tweezers.

Highly-concentrated isopropyl alcohol (over 90%) can cause damage if not handled properly.

  • Use a pipette or syringe to apply a few drops of highly-concentrated isopropyl alcohol to the frame's perimeter and area below the battery cutout.
  • Lint-free or : Wipe away any residue.

Step 20 | Apply new adhesives

Peel the rectangular display enclosure adhesive from its large liner.

  • Keep the adhesive top liner intact during application.

  • Apply the adhesive to the frame, in the same location as the old adhesive, just below the battery cutout.
  • Use the white line on the frame to help align the right edge of the adhesive.
  • Press down firmly with your fingers to secure the adhesive to the frame.

Ensure the screen is aligned with the frame by holding it in place and using the top edge's camera cutout for reference.

  • Peel off the blue liner from the pre-installed adhesive, making sure it faces up.
  • Position the larger, clear liner on the bottom side of the screen adhesive.

Verify the screen's orientation before proceeding with reassembly.

Peel back approximately 1 inch of the top liner nearest the camera cutout, exposing the adhesive underneath.

Do not remove the entire liner at this time.

Take your time aligning the adhesive with the frame as it is very sticky and cannot be moved once applied.

  • Keep the larger liner folded towards the bottom of the phone during this process.
  • Lay the exposed top edge of the adhesive onto the frame, using the lip to assist in alignment.
  • Once properly aligned, gently press down to secure it in place.

Apply remaining adhesive to the frame slowly and carefully, removing the large backing liner in a continuous motion.

Press the flat edge of your spudger along the adhesive's edge, securing it to the frame.

Grab the pull tab in the center of the left edge.

  • Pull and slowly remove the liner.
  • If the adhesive starts to peel up, check that all is seated with your spudger.
  • Hold down the adhesive with the spudger point if it continues to lift.

Step 27 | Reattach the screen

Attach the suction handle to the left side of the new screen with the handle facing left.

  • Use the suction handle to hold the screen in place on the left side of the frame.
  • If no suction handle is available, place the phone against a stable object like a heavy box or thick book.

  • Align the screen cable over the socket.
  • Cable guide: Press in one edge until it clicks, then press down firmly.

Attach the display cable bracket to the logic board by hooking its bottom edge into the designated slot.

Bent brackets may not fit properly, so if necessary, replace it with a new one.

Snap the bracket firmly back into place, ensuring it is securely attached.

Step 30 | Remove the liners

Locate and remove any liners from the top edge of the screen.

Remove the blue liner covering the square adhesive located below the battery cutout.

Peel off the remaining perimeter adhesive liner using the pull tabs located on the left edge.

Step 33 | Secure the new screen

Hold the screen about 1 inch (2.5 cm) above the frame using the suction handle.

  • Use a spudger to fold back the flap of graphite film over the screen cable.
  • Press the screen firmly into place.

Remove the suction handle.

  • Avoid damaging the screen with excessive heat.

    Lightly warm the screen using a iOpener, hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate.
  • Firmly press around the perimeter of the screen to secure it to the frame.
