Google Pixel 8a Earpiece Speaker Replacement

Note that any repair can compromise the water resistance of your phone.

  • The earpiece speaker may be damaged if sound is crackly, distorted, or silent.
  • The gasket between the earpiece and frame offers dust and water resistance, but its effectiveness depends on phone age and condition.
  • This repair requires replacement back cover and flash unit adhesives.

Step 1 | Prepare your Pixel for disassembly

Allow Pixel's battery to drain below 25% before proceeding, as a charged lithium-ion battery may catch fire if damaged.

  • Unplug all cables from your phone.
  • Persistently power off your phone.
  • Simultaneously press the power and volume up buttons to access the shutdown menu.

Step 2 | Adhesive information

Avoid inserting tools into openings more than 3 mm deep.

  • Do not apply excessive force to the adhesive.
  • Avoid the camera area when using your tool.
  • The maximum insert depth is 3 mm for all openings.

Step 3 | Insert an opening tool

Step 3 image

Identify the opening tool's flat and curved ends.

Always use the flat end during the opening procedure to avoid damage.

  • Angle the flat end so its sharp edge points upward.
  • Insert the sharp corner of the tool between the back cover and frame, starting at a corner.

Step 4 | Separate the perimeter adhesive

Remove the adhesive strip securing the back cover above the camera bump.

  • Insert an opening pick under the top left corner of the back cover until it's near the top edge of the camera bump.
  • The opening pick can be inserted more than 3 mm along the top edge without causing damage.
  • Slide the pick to the right, stopping at the right edge of the cameras.

Apply constant pressure to separate the final piece of adhesive.

  • Use both picks to pry up simultaneously, taking care not to bend the back cover.
  • If necessary, rotate the cover side-to-side to loosen the adhesive further.
  • As a last resort, lightly heat the back cover just below the camera bump with a hair dryer or iOpener to soften the adhesive.

Step 11 | Remove the back cover

Step 11 image

Remove the back cover.

  • During reassembly: Test your phone by powering it on and checking that it works.
  • Power off your phone before proceeding with reassembly.

Failure to test the phone may result in costly repairs or device loss during sealing.

  • Apply new adhesive and install your back cover according to the provided guide.

Step 12 | Separate the flash unit

Step 12 image

Use a hair dryer to heat the flash unit, warming it just enough to soften the adhesive.

  • Heat only until it is warm to the touch, being careful not to overheat.
  • Avoid overheating as this can damage the battery and surrounding components.

As an alternative, use an iOpener or heat gun with caution.

Step 13

Risk of damaging the flash cable — handle with care.

  • Lift the top edge of the flash using a pick to separate it from the cover.
  • Take extra caution not to damage the flash cable.

Refer to the reassembly guide for instructions on replacing the flash adhesives.

Step 14 | Unclip the logic board cover

Step 14 image

Keep track of each screw and ensure it returns to its original location.

  • The Pixel 8a uses Torx Plus screws, but standard Torx bits are also compatible.
  • Apply constant, downward force when turning the screwdriver to prevent stripping.

Using an incorrect screwdriver may result in stripped screws or damage to components.

  • Use a Torx Plus 3IP screwdriver to remove the 15 screws securing the logic board cover:
    • Thirteen screws, each 4.3 mm in length
    • Two screws, each 1.9 mm in length

Step 15

Be very careful not to damage the spring contacts around your phone's perimeter.

  • Insert an opening pick under the bottom right corner of the logic board cover and pry up to release the clip.
  • Insert the tip of a spudger under the notch near the top right corner of the logic board cover, just below the screw hole, and pry up to release the clip.

Only insert your tool where instructed.

Insert the flat end of a spudger under the right edge of the battery press connector and pry straight up to disconnect it.

  • To reconnect, align the press connector over the socket and gently press down on one side until it clicks into place.
  • Then, press down on the other side. It may take a few tries for proper alignment.

Only pry where instructed to avoid damaging surface mounted components around the battery and 5G mmWave connectors.
