Google Pixel 8a Back Cover Replacement

  • Replace a cracked or broken back cover on your Google Pixel 8a with this guide.
  • You'll need replacement back cover adhesive to complete the repair.

Step 1 | Prepare your Pixel for disassembly

Let the Pixel's battery drain below 25% before starting this repair, as a charged lithium-ion battery may catch fire if damaged.

  • Unplug all cables from your phone.
  • Completely power off your phone.

Press the power button and volume up button simultaneously to access the shutdown menu.

Step 2 | Adhesive information

Do not insert your tool too far into the phone as it may damage the internals.

  • Be cautious when inserting tools near the cameras and only go up to 3 mm depth.
  • Avoid using the opening tool under the camera bump's edges, as this can cause damage.

Step 3 | Insert an opening tool

Identify the flat end on your opening tool, featuring both a flat surface and a curved section.

  • During removal, position the flat end at an angle so its edge is pointing upward.
  • Insert the opening tool's edge between the back cover and frame, targeting a sharp corner to ease adhesive separation.

Step 4 | Separate the perimeter adhesive

Use an opening tool to pry along the bottom edge, separating the adhesive holding the back cover in place.

Insert an opening tool into the bottom right corner and slide it up along the right edge.

Stop at the bottom of the camera bump to avoid damaging the surrounding components.

  • Remove the opening tool from under the back cover.

  • Insert the opening tool into the top right corner of the back cover.
  • Slide the opening tool along the top edge to the top left corner.
  • Remove the opening tool.

Locate the opening tool on the left edge of the back cover.

  • Position the tool under the camera bump.
  • Slide the tool down the left edge to break the adhesive.

Step 8 | Separate the camera bump adhesive

Insert an opening pick under the top left corner of the back cover.

  • The tip should be close to the top edge of the camera bump.
  • You can insert the opening pick more than 3 mm along the top edge.
  • Slide the pick to the right, stopping when you reach the right edge of the cameras.

Locate the area below the camera bump and gently pry the back cover away from the device.

  • Use a flat-edged tool, such as an opening pick, to carefully lift the adhesive securing the back cover at this point.
  • For added leverage, insert a second opening pick into the same area on the opposite side of the device.

Use both picks to pry up the back cover simultaneously.

  • Apply constant pressure to separate the final piece of adhesive securing the back cover.
  • Be careful not to bend the back cover.

  • If the adhesive feels stubborn, rotate the cover side-to-side to loosen it further.
  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer or iOpener to soften the adhesive just below the camera bump. Apply gentle heat for a few seconds.

Step 11 | Remove the back cover

Remove the back cover.

  • Test the phone by powering it on, checking for functionality.
  • Power off the phone before continuing reassembly.
  • Apply new adhesive and install the back cover, following the provided guide.
