Google Pixel 8 Screen Replacement

This repair guide is not affiliated with Google and has been created by iFixit staff.

  • To replace a damaged screen on your Google Pixel 8, follow this guide carefully.
  • You will need replacement screen adhesive to complete the repair.

Note that this guide was written for the 5G mmWave antenna model. If you have a non-mmWave version of the Pixel 8, skip the relevant steps and proceed with caution.

Step 1 | Prepare your Pixel for disassembly

Thumbnail 3

Allow Pixel's battery to drain below 25% — charged lithium-ion battery may catch fire if damaged.

  • Unplug all cables from phone.
  • Press and hold power and volume up buttons simultaneously until shutdown menu appears.

Step 2 | Mark your opening picks

Step 2 image

Thumbnail 3

Inserting an opening pick too far can cause damage to your device.

  • Measure 3mm from the tip of the opening pick.
  • Mark the point with a permanent marker, or tape a coin there.

Step 3 | Heat the bottom edge adhesive

Step 3 image

Be cautious not to apply excessive heat, which may damage the screen and/or battery.

  • Apply an iOpener to the bottom edge of the screen for two minutes to soften the adhesive.
  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate, but take care not to apply excessive heat.

Step 4 | Secure the Anti-Clamp

Using the Anti-Clamp: skip this section if not using the tool.

  • Pull the blue handle backwards to unlock the Anti-Clamp's arms.
  • Position your phone, screen up, between the arms on an object so it rests level.
  • Slide the arms over the left edge of the phone for access to the bottom edge.
  • Position suction cups as close to the center of the bottom edge as possible.

Ensure the phone is secure and stable throughout this process.

Step 5 | Twist the handle

  • Pull the handle forward to lock the arms.

  • Turn the handle clockwise one full turn (360 degrees).
    • Check the suction cups stay aligned; if they slip, proceed with additional steps:
    • Remove the Anti-Clamp, apply tape for secure attachment.

Step 6 | Insert an opening pick

Wait one minute for a gap to form between the screen and frame.

If the adhesive doesn't separate, twist the handle clockwise one quarter turn and wait another minute, applying more heat if necessary.

  • Insert an opening pick into the gap, being careful not to insert it more than 3 mm to avoid damaging the spring contacts.

Pull the blue handle backwards to unlock the arms and remove the Anti-Clamp using the pull tabs on the suction cups.

Step 7 | Apply a suction cup

Step 7 image

Attach a suction handle to the center of the screen's lower edge.

Step 8 | Insert an opening pick

Apply gentle to moderate pressure to the suction handle until a 1-2 mm gap appears between the screen and frame.

Be cautious not to apply excessive force, as this can cause damage.

  • If the screen does not separate easily, reapply heat and try again.
  • Once a gap has formed, carefully insert an opening pick into it.

Step 9 | Prevent damage to your phone

Step 9 image

Do not insert your pick more than 3 mm to prevent damaging the phone.

  • Be cautious when near the screen cable, which is located just below halfway up the left edge of the phone.
  • Avoid bending spring contacts around the perimeter of the phone.

Step 10 | Separate the bottom edge adhesive

Slide the opening pick along the bottom edge to separate the adhesive.

Leave the pick in the bottom right corner to prevent the adhesive from resealing.

Step 11 | Heat the right edge adhesive

Step 11 image

Apply a iOpener to the right edge of the screen for 2 minutes.

Alternatively, use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate; however, be cautious as extreme heat can damage the screen and/or battery.

Step 12 | Separate the right edge adhesive

Insert a second opening pick under the bottom right corner of the screen.

  • Slide the new pick to the top right corner to separate the adhesive securing the screen's right edge.
  • Leave the pick in the top right corner to prevent the adhesive from resealing.

Step 13 | Leave a pick in the bottom left corner

  • Insert a third opening pick under the bottom edge of the screen.
  • Slide the pick to the bottom left corner and hold it there.
  • Leave the pick in place to prevent the adhesive from resealing.

Step 14 | Heat the left edge adhesive

Step 14 image

Apply a heated iOpener to the left edge of the screen for 2 minutes.

Alternatively, use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate with caution: extreme heat may damage the screen or battery.

Step 15 | Separate the left edge adhesive

Insert a fourth opening pick under the bottom left corner of the screen.

  • Slide the new pick to the top left corner to separate the adhesive securing the screen's left edge.
  • Leave the pick in the top left corner to prevent resealing of the adhesive.

Step 16 | Heat the top edge adhesive

Step 16 image

Apply a heated iOpener to the top edge of the screen for 2 minutes.

  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate.
  • Be careful when using extreme heat as it may damage the screen and/or battery.

Step 17 | Separate the top edge adhesive

Step 17 image

Insert the fifth opening pick into the gap at the top left corner of the screen.

  • Slide the opening pick towards the top right corner to break the adhesive seal.

Step 18 | Prop up the screen

Step 18 image

Position a small box or stack of books to your phone's left for screen support.

  • Slightly lift the right edge of the screen, as if closing a book.
  • Be mindful not to damage the screen cable while handling the screen.
  • Verify that the screen is fully disengaged by checking for any remaining adhesive; use an opening pick to separate it if necessary.
  • Keep the screen propped up to access the screen cable.

Step 19 | Remove the screen cable cover

Step 19 image

Insert the point of a spudger under the top left corner of the screen's press connector.

  • Gently pry up and disconnect the cable.
  • Remove the screen.

To reconnect a press connector, align it over its socket and gently press down on one side until it clicks into place. Then press down on the other side. Do not press in the middle as this can cause permanent damage to the pins if the connector is misaligned.

Step 21 | Screen information

Step 21 image

Handling the Pixel's screen can be delicate due to its fragility.

  • Hold the screen by its edges only when handling.
  • Ensure the screen is placed on a soft, lint-free cloth or similar surface to prevent damage.

Step 22 | Reassembly information

Step 22 image

During reassembly, if your new screen has pre-installed adhesive, follow these steps.

  • Remove liners from the front camera cutout, rear camera pad, back of the screen, and perimeter adhesive using the pull tabs.
  • Reconnect the screen cable and reinstall its cover.
  • Prior to sealing, temporarily power on your phone to test functionality and ensure everything is working as expected. Power it down before proceeding.

Apply even pressure around the perimeter of the screen for a secure bond with the new adhesive.

  • Firmly press the screen into place, feeling for clips to "pop" into position.
  • Optionally, apply additional pressure evenly to strengthen the adhesive bond.
