Google Pixel 8 Logic Board Replacement

Note: This guide was made using the 5G mmWave antenna model of the Pixel 8. If you have the non-mmWave version, skip the relevant steps as they may not apply to your device.

Step 1 | Prepare your Pixel for disassembly

A fully charged battery poses a risk of fire if damaged, so drain it below 25%.

  • Disconnect all cables from your phone.
  • Power off your device completely.
  • Press and hold the power and volume up buttons simultaneously to access the shutdown menu.

Step 2 | Remove the SIM card tray

Insert the SIM eject tool, SIM ejector bit, or a straightened paperclip into the SIM card tray hole on the left edge of your phone.

  • Firmly press until the tray ejects.
  • Remove the ejected SIM card tray.

Step 3 | Mark your opening picks

Marking the opening pick will help prevent accidental insertion too far.

  • Measure 3 mm from the tip of the pick and mark with a permanent marker.
  • Alternatively, tape a coin to the pick 3 mm from the tip for visual reference.

Step 4 | Heat the bottom edge adhesive

Extreme heat can damage the screen and/or battery.

  • Heat an iOpener on the bottom edge of the screen for two minutes to soften the adhesive.
  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate, but be cautious.

Step 5 | Secure the Anti-Clamp

Do not attempt to open your device without using the Anti-Clamp unless instructed otherwise.

  • Use the Anti-Clamp: Follow these steps for a simplified procedure, or check the guide for more information on its use.
  • Pull the blue handle backwards to unlock the Anti-Clamp's arms.
  • Place your phone screen side up between the arms with its bottom edge hanging off an object.
  • Position the arms over the left edge of your phone for access to the bottom edge.
  • Align the suction cups as close to the center of the bottom edge as possible and squeeze them together to create a seal.

Step 6 | Twist the handle

Lock the arms by pulling the handle forward.

  • Turn the handle clockwise one full turn (360 degrees).
  • Continue turning until the suction cups begin to stretch, ensuring they remain aligned as you do so.

If the cups continue to slip, remove the Anti-Clamp and apply tape for secure adhesion.

Step 7 | Insert an opening pick

Wait one minute for a gap to form between the screen and frame.

  • If no separation, twist handle clockwise by one quarter turn and wait another minute.
  • Apply more heat if screen cools down.
  • Do not insert opening pick more than 3 mm to avoid damaging spring contacts.
  • Insert an opening pick into the gap.

Pull blue handle backwards to unlock arms and remove Anti-Clamp using pull tabs on suction cups.

Step 8 | Apply a suction cup

Attach a suction handle to the middle of the screen's lower edge.

Step 9 | Insert an opening pick

Apply suction to the device using a firm grip on the suction handle.

  • A gap should form between the screen and frame.
  • If no gap forms, increase heat and try again.
  • Insert an opening pick into the formed gap.

Step 10 | Prevent damage to your phone

Never insert the pick more than 3 mm as you separate the screen adhesive — risk of damage.

  • Be cautious when approaching the area around the screen cable, located just below halfway up the left edge, as it can be easily torn.
  • Avoid bending the many spring contacts around the phone's perimeter, taking extra care in these areas.

Step 11 | Separate the bottom edge adhesive

Slide the opening pick along the bottom edge to separate the adhesive.

Leave the pick in the bottom right corner to prevent the adhesive from resealing.

Step 12 | Heat the right edge adhesive

Apply a heated iOpener to the right edge of the screen for 2 minutes.

  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate, but be careful as extreme heat can damage the screen and/or battery.

Step 13 | Separate the right edge adhesive

Insert a second opening pick at the bottom right corner of the screen.

  • Slide the new pick up to the top right corner to separate the right edge's adhesive.
  • Leave this pick in place to prevent resealing.

Step 14 | Leave a pick in the bottom left corner

Insert opening pick into bottom edge of screen.

  • Slide pick towards bottom left corner.
  • Hold pick in place at bottom left corner to prevent reseal.

Step 15 | Heat the left edge adhesive

Apply a heated iOpener to the left edge of the screen for 2 minutes.

  • Alternative: Use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate (be cautious of excessive heat damaging screen and/or battery).

Step 16 | Separate the left edge adhesive

Insert a fourth opening pick under the bottom left corner of the screen.

  • Slide it up to the top left corner to separate the adhesive on the left edge.
  • Leave the pick in place to keep the adhesive from resealing.

Step 17 | Heat the top edge adhesive

Apply a iOpener to the top edge of the screen for 2 minutes.

  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate.
  • Be careful not to apply extreme heat, which can damage the screen and/or battery.

Step 18 | Separate the top edge adhesive

Insert a 5th opening pick near the top left corner under the screen.

  • Slide it towards the top right corner.
  • The pick should now be at the top right corner, separating the adhesive on the screen's edge.

Step 19 | Prop up the screen

Place a prop or support to the left of your phone.

  • Swing up the right edge of the screen, like opening a book.
  • Be careful not to strain the screen cable.

  • If stuck, use an opening pick around the perimeter to separate any remaining adhesive.
  • Prop up the screen for access to the screen cable.

Step 20 | Remove the screen cable cover

Insert an opening pick under the upper edge of the screen cable cover.

Careful not to damage the surrounding components.

  • Pry gently until the cover starts to separate.
  • Once loose, remove the cover completely.

Step 21 | Disconnect the screen

Insert the point of a spudger under the top left corner of the screen's press connector.

  • Gently pry up and disconnect the cable.
  • Remove the screen.

To reconnect a press connector, align it over its socket and gently press down on one side until it clicks into place. Then press down on the other side. Do not press down in the middle to avoid pin bending and permanent damage.

The back of the Pixel's screen is extremely fragile and can be damaged by even minor scratches or dents.

  • Grip the screen by its edges when handling to minimize risk of damage.
  • When placing the screen on a work surface, ensure that nothing is touching the bottom, using a soft, lint-free cloth if possible.

During reassembly, follow these steps:

  • If using a new screen with pre-installed adhesive, continue with these instructions.
  • Otherwise, apply adhesive to your old screen according to the separate guide.

Use caution when handling adhesive and screen components.

  • Remove liners from front camera cutout, rear camera pad, screen back, and perimeter using pull tabs.
  • Reconnect screen cable and reattach its cover.

Test phone temporarily by powering on and verifying functionality before proceeding.

  • Firmly press screen into place; clips should "pop" into position.
  • Press around perimeter to secure with new adhesive.
  • (Optional): Apply pressure evenly for stronger adhesive bond.

Finalize by calibrating the fingerprint sensor using the provided guide.

Step 24 | Remove the shim

Locate the plastic shim attached to the midframe and bottom speaker.

  • Slide an opening pick under the plastic shim until you can grip it with tweezers or your fingers.

Use tweezers or your fingers to gently remove the shim from the midframe and the bottom speaker.

Step 26 | Unfasten the USB-C port bracket

Keep track of each screw and ensure it returns to its original position.

  • Torx Plus or standard Torx bits can be used for this repair.
  • Apply constant, downward force when driving screws to prevent stripping.
  • Use a T3 Torx driver to remove the two 5 mm long 3IP Torx Plus screws securing the USB-C port bracket.

Step 27 | Remove the USB-C port bracket

Remove the USB-C port bracket using either tweezers or your fingers.

Locate the plastic shim under the midframe and loudspeaker.

  • If replacing, remove the clear liner from the new shim.
  • Align the left side of the shim with markings on the midframe and press into place.
  • Firmly press down along the shim using a spudger's flat end to secure it.
  • Remove the blue liner.

Remove the screw securing the bottom speaker using a T3 Torx driver.

Insert spudger between top right corner of bottom speaker and frame.

  • Pry up bottom speaker with spudger to dislodge from recess.
  • Remove bottom speaker.

During reassembly, ensure gasket is seated properly before pressing speaker into place.

  • Insert edge of speaker with black gasket at downward angle into recess.
  • Press speaker firmly into place.

Step 31 | Disconnect the 5G mmWave antenna

Locate the 5G mmWave antenna cable connected to the logic board.

  • Pry up the cable using the point of a spudger.

Excessive heat can damage the battery.

  • Apply an iOpener to the left edge of the phone for two minutes to loosen the cable adhesive.
  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate, but take care not to apply extreme heat.

Step 33 | Separate the adhesive

Insert a pick under the 5G mmWave antenna cable's bottom section of adhesive.

  • Slide the pick toward the top edge of the phone to separate the adhesive.

Repeat the same process for the upper section of adhesive.

Step 35 | Reposition the 5G mmWave antenna cable

Do not fold or crease the 5G mmWave antenna cable.

  • Move the 5G mmWave antenna cable over the top of the phone to keep it out of the way during disassembly.

Step 36 | Remove the graphite sheet

Remove the large graphite sheet, which connects the upper part of the battery, midframe, and rear cameras.

    spudger under the top right corner of the graphite sheet and lift until you can grip it with your fingers.
  • Pull up and remove the entire graphite sheet. If it tears, grip the torn parts and remove in sections.

Do not reuse the old graphite sheet during reassembly.

Step 37 | Unfasten the midframe

Remove the midframe by using a T3 Torx screwdriver to remove the eight 3IP Torx Plus screws. These screws are each 5.1 mm long.

Separate the midframe from the thermal pad.

  • Slide a flat-ended spudger under the bottom right corner of the midframe.
  • The midframe will loosen once it's completely separated.

Disconnect the midframe from the frame.

  • Inspect the thermal pad for damage during reassembly.

If damaged, replace the thermal pad immediately to avoid overheating issues.

  • Remove any debris with high-concentration isopropyl alcohol and a microfiber or lint-free cloth.
  • Apply a new thermal pad to ensure proper heat dissipation.

Step 40 | Disconnect the battery

Use a plastic spudger to carefully pry up and disconnect the battery connector.

Never touch the logic board with any tool or probe.

  • Insert the point of a spudger under the bottom half of the wide rear camera press connector, between the surface-mounted components.
  • Pry up carefully to disconnect the wide rear camera.

Step 42 | Unfasten the wide rear camera

Use a T3 Torx screwdriver to remove the two 3IP Torx Plus screws, each measuring 5.1 mm in length, which secure the wide rear camera.

Insert the spudger into the camera screw hole cutout.

  • Lift the camera with the spudger.
  • Remove the camera module.

Step 44 | Disconnect the ultrawide rear camera

Disconnect the ultrawide rear camera press connector using a spudger.

  • Pry the connector away from the logic board.
  • The connector should release with a slight amount of force.

Insert the tip of a spudger into the top screw cutout on the ultrawide rear camera.

  • Use the spudger to lift the camera out of its recess.
  • Remove the ultrawide rear camera.

Step 46 | Disconnect the front camera

Use a spudger to carefully pry up the front camera press connector from the logic board.

Step 47 | Separate the adhesive

Locate the front camera cable, lightly adhered to the earpiece speaker.

  • Insert an opening pick under the front camera cable to pry it loose from the adhesive.

If the old adhesive is no longer sticky, use a double-sided tape, such as Tesa Tape, to reattach the front camera securely during reassembly.

Step 48 | Remove the front camera

  • Adjust the 5G mmWave antenna cable to align with the right edge of the phone.
  • Free the front camera from the overlapping antenna cable.

Remove the front camera.

During reassembly, ensure the front camera is properly seated under the antenna cable and in its recess.

Step 49 | Unfasten the 5G mmWave antenna bracket

Remove the T3 Torx screw using a T3 Torx screwdriver.

  • The screw is located on the 5G mmWave antenna bracket.
  • The screw is 5.1 mm long and a Torx Plus type.

Insert spudger into notch on 5G mmWave antenna bracket.

  • Pry up with spudger to separate bracket from frame.
  • Remove the bracket.

Reassembly: reinsert top edge of bracket first at downward angle, ensuring foam pad is seated properly before securing.

Remove the antenna and its cable from the frame.

  • If the cable has come loose, align the press connector over the socket and press down firmly to secure.

Step 52 | Disconnect the interconnect cable

Use a spudger to carefully pry up the interconnect cable press connector.

  • Slide the spudger between the interconnect cable and the board to loosen the connector.
  • Gently pull on the interconnect cable to disconnect the press connector completely.

Heating the phone above a certain temperature can cause heat damage to the battery.

  • Lay the phone face down on your workspace, with the back cover facing up.
  • Use a hairdryer or heat gun to heat the left side of the back cover, near the top and bottom edges of the battery. It should be slightly too hot to touch.

Do not overheat the phone, as this can cause damage to the battery.

Step 54 | Apply isopropyl alcohol

Flip the phone over and place it on your workspace.

  • Apply 3-4 drops of highly-concentrated isopropyl alcohol (≥90%) to the right edge of the battery.

Position your phone for optimal drainage by tilting it, allowing the isopropyl alcohol to flow towards the adhesive along the top and bottom edges.

Allow the solution to sit for 1 minute to enable complete dissolution of the adhesive.

Insert the flat side of an opening pick into the gap between the battery and the frame.

Avoid creasing or bending the battery to prevent chemical leaks and fire risk.

  • Isolate the area with caution due to strong adhesive holding the battery in place.
  • Firmly grip your phone with one hand, then use a pick to pry the battery up from the frame with your free hand.
  • Apply constant pressure until separation occurs, or reapply heat and isopropyl alcohol if needed.
  • If the battery doesn't budge after two minutes of pressure, repeat the process with increased heat and cleaning agent.

Step 58 | Remove the battery

Do not reuse a creased, bent, or deformed battery - it poses a fire hazard.

  • Replace the faulty battery with a new one.
  • Use an opening pick to gently lift and separate the remaining adhesive from the battery.
  • Remove the battery from the device completely.

During reassembly, follow this guide's instructions for removing old adhesive and installing your new battery.

Step 59 | Unfasten the grounding bracket

Remove the 3IP Torx Plus screw using a T3 Torx screwdriver.

  • The screw is located at the bottom right edge of your phone and secures the grounding bracket.
  • The screw is approximately 2.5 mm long, but this may vary slightly depending on model specifications.

  • Remove the two 3IP Torx Plus screws using a T3 Torx screwdriver.
  • The screws are 3.5 mm in length.

Move the interconnect cable away from the frame to prevent it from getting caught on the logic board.

  • You may choose to secure the cable using tape to the left edge of the phone.

Step 63 | Remove the logic board

  • Remove the SIM card tray.
  • Lift the logic board's top edge using the flat end of a spudger, then grasp with your fingers.

Lift the logic board upward to disengage its bottom clip.

  • Remove the logic board.

When reassembling, press the logic board firmly into place at a downward angle with the USB-C port and rubber gasket aligned.

Reinsert the rubber plunger next to the SIM card tray slot with the red rings facing towards the outer edge of the phone.
