Google Pixel 8 Bottom Speaker Replacement

This guide, written by iFixit staff, is not endorsed by Google. It's designed for the Google Pixel 8's bottom speaker replacement. The bottom speaker handles calls, videos, and music. Replace it if you're experiencing distorted or inaudible audio.

  • You'll need replacement screen adhesive to complete this repair.
  • This guide is based on the 5G mmWave antenna model; skip irrelevant steps if your Pixel 8 has the non-mmWave version.

Step 1 | Prepare your Pixel for disassembly

Step 1 image

A partially drained battery (below 25%) is required before starting this repair, as a charged lithium-ion battery may catch fire if damaged.

  • Unplug all cables from your phone.
  • Power off your phone completely.
  • Press the power and volume up buttons simultaneously to bring up the shutdown menu.

Step 2 | Mark your opening picks

Step 2 image

Thumbnail 3

Mark an opening pick by applying permanent marker 3mm from the tip or attach a coin using tape.

  • Measure 3mm from the tip of the pick.
  • Do not insert the pick too far into your device, as it can cause damage.
  • Mark the opening pick with a permanent marker or attach a coin to a pick using tape, 3mm from the tip.

Step 3 | Heat the bottom edge adhesive

Step 3 image

Be cautious when applying heat - extreme temperatures may damage the screen and/or battery.

  • Apply an iOpener to the bottom edge of the screen for two minutes to soften the adhesive.
  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate, but exercise caution when using high heat.

Once softened, the adhesive can be separated more easily.

Step 4 | Secure the Anti-Clamp

Step 4 image

Use the Anti-Clamp by following these steps.

  • Pull the blue handle backwards to unlock the arms.
  • Place your phone, screen up, on an object so it rests level between the arms.
  • Slide the arms over the left edge of your phone for access to the bottom edge.
  • Position suction cups near the center of the bottom edge.
  • Squeeze the cups together to create suction.

Step 5 | Twist the handle

Step 5 image

Thumbnail 3

Turn the handle clockwise one full turn (360 degrees) or until the suction cups begin to stretch.

  • Ensure the cups remain aligned with each other as they stretch.
  • If alignment is a problem, remove the Anti-Clamp and apply tape for better cup adhesion.

Step 6 | Insert an opening pick

Step 6 image

Thumbnail 3

Wait one minute for a gap to form between the screen and frame.

If the adhesive doesn't separate, twist the handle clockwise one quarter turn and wait another minute. Apply more heat if the screen cools down.

  • Insert an opening pick into the gap, making sure not to insert it more than 3 mm to avoid damaging the spring contacts.

Pull the blue handle backwards to unlock the arms and remove the Anti-Clamp using the pull tabs on the suction cups.

Step 7 | Apply a suction cup

Step 7 image

Attach a suction handle to the middle of the screen's lower edge.

Step 8 | Insert an opening pick

Step 8 image

Thumbnail 3

Use a suction handle to pull the screen up from the frame with firm pressure.

  • If the screen does not separate easily, reapply heat and attempt again.
  • Once a gap has formed, carefully insert an opening pick.

Step 9 | Prevent damage to your phone

Step 9 image

Thumbnail 2

Do not insert pick more than 3 mm when separating screen adhesive.

  • Identify the screen cable, located just below the left edge of the phone, and take extra care to avoid damaging it.
  • Beware of numerous spring contacts along the phone's perimeter; be gentle to prevent bending these delicate components.

Step 10 | Separate the bottom edge adhesive

Step 10 image

Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Insert an opening pick under the device's bottom edge and slide it along to loosen the adhesive.

Do not remove the pick yet, as this can cause the adhesive to seal again.

Leave the opening pick in place at the bottom right corner until further instructions are given.

Step 11 | Heat the right edge adhesive

Step 11 image

Avoid applying extreme heat directly to the screen and battery.

  • Apply a heated iOpener to the right edge of the screen for two minutes.
  • Or, use an alternative heat source like a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate with caution.

Step 12 | Separate the right edge adhesive

Step 12 image

Thumbnail 3

Insert a second opening pick under the bottom right corner of the screen.

  • Slide the new pick to the top right corner, separating the adhesive on the screen's right edge.
  • Leave the pick in place at the top right corner to prevent resealing of the adhesive.

Step 13 | Leave a pick in the bottom left corner

Step 13 image

Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Insert a third opening pick at the bottom edge of the screen.

  • Slide this pick towards the bottom left corner.
  • Leave it in place to prevent re-adhesion.

Step 14 | Heat the left edge adhesive

Step 14 image

Excessive heat may cause damage to the screen and/or battery.

  • Apply a heated iOpener to the left edge of the screen for two minutes.
  • As an alternative, use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate with caution.

Step 15 | Separate the left edge adhesive

Step 15 image

Thumbnail 3

Insert opening pick at screen's bottom left corner.

  • Slide pick up to top left corner to separate screen's left edge adhesive.
  • Leave pick in place to prevent adhesive reseal.

Step 16 | Heat the top edge adhesive

Step 16 image

Be cautious when applying heat — extreme temperatures may damage the screen and/or battery.

  • Apply a heated iOpener to the top edge of the screen for two minutes.
  • As an alternative, use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate, but be extremely careful.

Step 17 | Separate the top edge adhesive

Position a small box or stack of books beside your phone to elevate the screen.

  • Pivot the right edge of the screen upwards, similar to opening a book.
  • Be cautious not to strain the screen cable.

  • If the screen feels stuck, use an opening pick around the perimeter to release any remaining adhesive.
  • Pivot the screen upwards for access to the screen cable.

Step 19 | Remove the screen cable cover

Step 19 image

Insert the point of a spudger under the top left corner of the screen's press connector.

  • Gently pry up and disconnect the cable.
  • Remove the screen.

To reconnect, align the press connector over its socket and gently press down on one side until it clicks into place. Press the other side down next. Do not press in the middle, as this can cause permanent damage to the pins.

Step 21 | Screen information

Step 21 image

Handling the Pixel's screen can be delicate due to its fragile nature.

  • Grip the screen by its edges when handling.
  • Place the screen on a soft, lint-free cloth or a similar surface to prevent damage during work.

Keep track of each screw and replace it in its original position.

  • For this repair, you can use either a Torx Plus or standard Torx bit.
  • To prevent stripping, apply constant downward force when removing screws.

Use a T3 Torx driver to avoid damaging the 5 mm‐long 3IP Torx Plus screws securing the USB‐C port bracket.

  • There are two of these screws in total, located on the USB‐C port bracket.

When reassembling, replace the plastic shim at the bottom of the midframe and loudspeaker.

  • If no replacement is available, press the old one back into place.

Ensure you have a suitable replacement before proceeding.

  • Remove the clear liner from the shim for easy alignment.
  • Align the left side of the shim with the midframe markings and press it firmly into place.
  • Use a spudger to press down along the entire length of the shim to secure it.
