Google Pixel 8 Battery Replacement

Lithium-ion batteries have a limited lifespan and may swell over time.

  • Determine if your battery needs replacement due to premature aging or unexpected death.
  • Obtain replacement screen adhesive for this repair.

This guide, authored by iFixit staff, is not endorsed by Google. It's intended for the Google Pixel 8 with a 5G mmWave antenna. For non-mmWave models, skip relevant steps.

Step 1 | Prepare your Pixel for disassembly

Let Pixel's battery drain below 25% before proceeding, as a charged lithium-ion battery may catch fire if damaged.

  • Unplug all cables from phone.
  • Powers off phone completely.
  • Press power and volume up buttons simultaneously to access shutdown menu.

Step 2 | Mark your opening picks

Use an opening pick to separate the screen from the frame.

Never insert a pick too far into your device — risk of damage.

  • Mark a pick by measuring 3 mm from the tip and marking with a permanent marker.
  • Alternatively, tape a coin to the pick at the same point.

Step 3 | Heat the bottom edge adhesive

Excessive heat may damage the screen and/or battery — proceed with caution.

  • Apply an iOpener to the bottom edge of the screen for two minutes to soften the adhesive.
  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate, but be careful not to apply extreme heat.

Step 4 | Secure the Anti-Clamp

  • The next steps assume use of the Anti-Clamp; skip ahead for alternate method if not using.

  • Pull the blue handle backwards to unlock the Anti-Clamp's arms.
  • Position your phone on an object with screen side up, resting level between the Anti-Clamp's arms.
  • Slide the arms over the left edge of your phone for access to the bottom edge.
  • Position the suction cups near the center of the bottom edge.
  • Squeeze the cups together to create suction.

Step 5 | Twist the handle

Lock the arms by pulling the handle forward.

  • Tighten the suction cups by turning the handle clockwise one full turn (360 degrees).
  • Ensure the cups remain aligned with each other as they stretch; if necessary, apply tape for secure adhesion.

Tape use may be required to prevent suction cup slippage.

Step 6 | Insert an opening pick

Wait one minute for a gap to form between the screen and frame.

If adhesive doesn't separate, twist handle clockwise 1/4 turn and wait another minute; apply more heat if necessary.

  • Insert an opening pick into the gap formed, but not further than 3 mm to avoid damaging spring contacts.
  • Pull blue handle backwards to unlock arms and remove Anti-Clamp using pull tabs on suction cups.

Step 7 | Apply a suction cup

Attach a suction handle to the middle of the screen's lower edge.

Step 8 | Insert an opening pick

Apply suction handle with firm grip, increasing pressure until a gap appears.

  • If no gap forms, reapply gentle heat and attempt separation.
  • Insert opening pick into the newly formed gap.

Step 9 | Prevent damage to your phone

Do not insert pick more than 3mm to avoid damaging your phone.

  • Locate the screen cable, approximately halfway up left edge of the phone, and exercise extreme care to prevent damage.
  • Avoid bending spring contacts around perimeter; be cautious in these areas.

Step 10 | Separate the bottom edge adhesive

Slide the opening pick along the bottom edge to separate the adhesive.

  • Leave the pick in the bottom right corner to prevent the adhesive from resealing.

Step 11 | Heat the right edge adhesive

Apply a iOpener to the right edge of the screen for 2 minutes.

  • Alternatively, you may use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate.
  • Be cautious not to apply extreme heat, which can damage the screen and/or battery

Step 12 | Separate the right edge adhesive

Insert a second opening pick under the bottom right corner of the screen.

  • Slide the new pick to the top right corner to separate the adhesive securing the screen's right edge.
  • Leave the pick in place at the top right corner to prevent resealing of the adhesive.

Step 13 | Leave a pick in the bottom left corner

Insert the first opening pick under the bottom edge of the screen.

  • Insert a second opening pick near the bottom right corner.
  • Add a third opening pick at the bottom left corner, then slide it into place.
  • Leave all three picks in their respective positions to prevent adhesive resealing.

Step 14 | Heat the left edge adhesive

Apply a iOpener to the left edge of the screen for 2 minutes.

  • Use an alternative heat source like a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate.

Be careful, as extreme heat can damage the screen and/or battery.

Step 15 | Separate the left edge adhesive

Insert a pick under the bottom left corner of the screen.

  • Slide the new pick to the top left corner to separate the left edge's adhesive.
  • Leave the pick in place to prevent resealing.

Step 16 | Heat the top edge adhesive

Apply a iOpener to the top edge of the screen for two minutes.

  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate.
  • Be careful as extreme heat can damage the screen and/or battery.

Step 17 | Separate the top edge adhesive

Insert a fifth opening pick under the top edge of the screen, near the left corner.

  • Slide the pick to the top right corner to separate the adhesive securing the screen's top edge.

Step 18 | Prop up the screen

Place a small box or stack of books near your phone on the left side.

  • Prop up the phone's screen using the box or books.
  • Swing the right edge of the screen upwards, like opening a book cover.

Be careful not to strain the screen cable.

If the screen feels stuck, use an opening pick to separate any remaining adhesive around the perimeter.

  • Re-prop up the screen so you can access the screen cable.

Step 19 | Remove the screen cable cover

Insert an opening pick between the screen cable cover and the device casing.

  • Pry gently at the upper edge of the cover.
  • Once loosened, remove the cover completely.

Step 20 | Disconnect the screen

Insert the point of a spudger under the top left corner of the screen's press connector.

  • Gently pry up and disconnect the cable.
  • Remove the screen.

To reconnect a press connector, align it over its socket and gently press down on one side until it clicks into place. Then press down on the other side; do not press in the middle.

Step 21 | Screen information

The Pixel's screen is fragile and prone to damage from minor scratches or dents.

  • Grip the screen by its edges when handling.
  • Place the screen on a soft, lint-free cloth to prevent contact with other objects at the bottom.

During reassembly, if your new screen has pre-installed adhesive, follow these steps.

  • Apply the following:
    • Remove liners from front camera cutout using pull tabs.
    • Remove liner from rear camera pad.
    • Remove liner from back of screen.
    • Remove perimeter adhesive liner.

Do not skip this step - incorrect screen alignment can cause damage to the frame or screen.

  • Reconnect screen cable and reinstall its cover.
  • Temporarily power on phone, test functionality, and ensure everything works as expected before sealing.
  • Power down phone.

Align screen to frame and press firmly into place - you should feel clips "pop" into position.

  • Apply even pressure around perimeter of screen using new adhesive.
  • Optionally, apply additional pressure to strengthen adhesive bond.

Calibrate fingerprint sensor by following the provided guide once reassembly is complete.

Step 23 | Disconnect the 5G mmWave antenna

Insert the pointed end of a spudger under the 5G mmWave antenna cable.

  • Pry upwards gently to release the cable from the logic board.
  • The cable should now be disconnected.

Step 24 | Heat the 5G mmWave antenna cable

Apply heat to the 5G mmWave antenna cable using an iOpener, a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate. Be cautious not to apply excessive heat, which can damage the battery.

Excessive heat application can result in damaged battery components.

  • Lay the heat source on the left edge of the phone for two minutes to soften the adhesive.
  • Target the areas where the cable is secured to the midframe with adhesive.

Step 25 | Separate the adhesive

  • Insert a pick underneath the bottom part of the 5G mmWave antenna cable's adhesive.
  • Slide the pick upwards towards the top edge of the phone to break the adhesive bond.

Repeat the removal process for the upper section of adhesive.

Step 27 | Reposition the 5G mmWave antenna cable

Avoid folding or creasing the 5G mmWave antenna cable — may cause damage.

Move the 5G mmWave antenna cable over the top of the phone to keep it clear of the disassembly area.

Step 28 | Remove the graphite sheet

Remove the large graphite sheet for repair completion.

  • Lift the top right corner of the sheet with a spudger and grip it with your fingers.
  • Peel up and remove the entire sheet, or in sections if torn.
  • Do not reuse the old graphite sheet during reassembly.

Step 29 | Remove the shim

Locate the plastic shim stuck between the midframe and bottom speaker.

  • Slide a pointed tool, such as an opening pick, under the shim.
  • Once positioned, use tweezers or your fingers to grip the shim.

Remove the shim from the midframe using tweezers or your fingers.

Repeat this process for the bottom speaker.

Step 31 | Unfasten the USB-C port bracket

Keep track of each screw and ensure it returns to its original location.

Using standard Torx bits is acceptable, but be aware that they may not provide optimal results.

  • Use a T3 Torx driver to remove the two 5 mm long 3IP Torx Plus screws securing the USB-C port bracket.
  • Apply constant, downward force when turning screws to prevent stripping.

Step 32 | Remove the USB-C port bracket

Remove the USB-C port bracket using either tweezers or your fingertips.

Step 33 | Reassembly information

During reassembly, replace the plastic shim that runs across the bottom of the midframe.

  • Remove the clear liner from the shim and inspect it for any damage.
  • Align the left side of the shim with the markings on the midframe and press it into place.
  • Firmly press down along the whole shim using a flat spudger to secure it in place.

If a replacement shim is not available, carefully press the old one back into its original position without damaging any surrounding components.

Step 34 | Unfasten the midframe

Remove the midframe using a T3 Torx screwdriver.

  • Locate and remove the eight 3IP Torx Plus screws, each measuring 5.1 mm in length.

Step 35 | Remove the midframe

Locate the lightly bonded thermal pad in the center of the midframe.

  • Use a spudger to carefully slide its flat end under the bottom right corner of the midframe.
  • The midframe will loosen once it separates completely from the thermal pad, which may require some force.

Remove the midframe from the frame.

  • During reassembly, inspect the thermal pad for damage.
  • If damaged, follow these steps:
    • Remove the thermal pad to avoid any heat-related issues.

    • Clean the area with high-concentration isopropyl alcohol (greater than 90%) and a .
    • Apply a new thermal pad.

Step 37 | Disconnect the battery

Disconnect the battery connector using a spudger.

Step 38 | Heat the battery adhesive

Avoid overheating your phone's battery as it may cause permanent damage.

  • Position your phone with its back facing upwards on a flat workspace.
  • Apply gentle heat to the left side of the back cover using a hairdryer or heat gun, focusing near the top and bottom edges of the battery.
  • The area should feel warm to the touch but not too hot to handle directly.

Step 39 | Apply isopropyl alcohol

Flip your phone over and place it on your workspace.

  • Apply a few drops of highly-concentrated isopropyl alcohol ( > 90% ) to the right edge of the battery.

Hold the phone at an angle to direct the isopropyl alcohol towards the top and bottom adhesive strips.

Allow the solution to sit for one full minute to effectively break down the adhesive bonds.

Step 41 | Insert an opening pick

Avoid inserting the opening pick into the top right corner of the battery.

  • Insert the flat side of an opening pick between the right edge of the battery and frame, near the center.

Step 42 | Separate the battery adhesive

Do not crease or bend the battery as it may leak chemicals or catch fire.

  • Apply gentle heat and use isopropyl alcohol to loosen the strong adhesive holding the battery in place.
  • Firmly secure your phone with one hand, then use a pick to pry the battery up with your free hand.
  • Maintain constant pressure until the battery separates from the frame.

Avoid pressing the pick into the bottom of the frame as it may damage the wireless charging coil.

  • If the battery does not budge after two minutes, reapply heat and isopropyl alcohol and try again.

Step 43 | Remove the battery

Beware of residual adhesive causing shorts or electrical shock.

  • Lift the battery using a opening pick to separate remaining adhesive.
  • Remove the battery.
  • During reassembly, refer to this guide for instructions on removing old adhesive and installing new battery.
