Lithium-ion batteries have a limited lifespan and may swell over time.
This guide, authored by iFixit staff, is not endorsed by Google. It's intended for the Google Pixel 8 with a 5G mmWave antenna. For non-mmWave models, skip relevant steps.
Let Pixel's battery drain below 25% before proceeding, as a charged lithium-ion battery may catch fire if damaged.
Use an opening pick to separate the screen from the frame.
Never insert a pick too far into your device — risk of damage.
Excessive heat may damage the screen and/or battery — proceed with caution.
The next steps assume use of the Anti-Clamp; skip ahead for alternate method if not using.
Lock the arms by pulling the handle forward.
Tape use may be required to prevent suction cup slippage.
Wait one minute for a gap to form between the screen and frame.
If adhesive doesn't separate, twist handle clockwise 1/4 turn and wait another minute; apply more heat if necessary.
Attach a suction handle to the middle of the screen's lower edge.
Apply suction handle with firm grip, increasing pressure until a gap appears.
Do not insert pick more than 3mm to avoid damaging your phone.
Slide the opening pick along the bottom edge to separate the adhesive.
Apply a iOpener to the right edge of the screen for 2 minutes.
Be cautious not to apply extreme heat, which can damage the screen and/or battery
Insert a second opening pick under the bottom right corner of the screen.
Insert the first opening pick under the bottom edge of the screen.
Apply a iOpener to the left edge of the screen for 2 minutes.
Be careful, as extreme heat can damage the screen and/or battery.
Insert a pick under the bottom left corner of the screen.
Apply a iOpener to the top edge of the screen for two minutes.
Be careful as extreme heat can damage the screen and/or battery.
Insert a fifth opening pick under the top edge of the screen, near the left corner.
Place a small box or stack of books near your phone on the left side.
Be careful not to strain the screen cable.
If the screen feels stuck, use an opening pick to separate any remaining adhesive around the perimeter.
Insert an opening pick between the screen cable cover and the device casing.
Insert the point of a spudger under the top left corner of the screen's press connector.
To reconnect a press connector, align it over its socket and gently press down on one side until it clicks into place. Then press down on the other side; do not press in the middle.
The Pixel's screen is fragile and prone to damage from minor scratches or dents.
During reassembly, if your new screen has pre-installed adhesive, follow these steps.
Do not skip this step - incorrect screen alignment can cause damage to the frame or screen.
Align screen to frame and press firmly into place - you should feel clips "pop" into position.
Calibrate fingerprint sensor by following the provided guide once reassembly is complete.
Insert the pointed end of a spudger under the 5G mmWave antenna cable.
Apply heat to the 5G mmWave antenna cable using an iOpener, a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate. Be cautious not to apply excessive heat, which can damage the battery.
Excessive heat application can result in damaged battery components.
Repeat the removal process for the upper section of adhesive.
Avoid folding or creasing the 5G mmWave antenna cable — may cause damage.
Move the 5G mmWave antenna cable over the top of the phone to keep it clear of the disassembly area.
Remove the large graphite sheet for repair completion.
Do not reuse the old graphite sheet during reassembly.
Locate the plastic shim stuck between the midframe and bottom speaker.
Remove the shim from the midframe using tweezers or your fingers.
Repeat this process for the bottom speaker.
Keep track of each screw and ensure it returns to its original location.
Using standard Torx bits is acceptable, but be aware that they may not provide optimal results.
Remove the USB-C port bracket using either tweezers or your fingertips.
During reassembly, replace the plastic shim that runs across the bottom of the midframe.
If a replacement shim is not available, carefully press the old one back into its original position without damaging any surrounding components.
Remove the midframe using a T3 Torx screwdriver.
Locate the lightly bonded thermal pad in the center of the midframe.
Remove the midframe from the frame.
Remove the thermal pad to avoid any heat-related issues.
Disconnect the battery connector using a spudger.
Avoid overheating your phone's battery as it may cause permanent damage.
Flip your phone over and place it on your workspace.
Hold the phone at an angle to direct the isopropyl alcohol towards the top and bottom adhesive strips.
Allow the solution to sit for one full minute to effectively break down the adhesive bonds.
Avoid inserting the opening pick into the top right corner of the battery.
Do not crease or bend the battery as it may leak chemicals or catch fire.
Avoid pressing the pick into the bottom of the frame as it may damage the wireless charging coil.
Beware of residual adhesive causing shorts or electrical shock.
