Thumbnail 3

Let your Pixel's battery drain below 25% before starting this repair — a charged lithium-ion battery may catch fire if damaged.

  • Unplug all cables from your phone.
  • Completely power off your phone.
  • Press the power and volume up buttons at the same time to bring up the shutdown menu.

Step 2 | Mark your opening picks

Step 2 image

Thumbnail 3

Measure 3 mm from the tip of the opening pick and mark it with a permanent marker.

Marking your pick will prevent accidental damage to your device if inserted too far.

  • As an alternative, tape a coin to the opening pick 3 mm from the tip.

Step 3 | Tape over a cracked screen

Step 3 image

Glass shards can cause injury or complicate disassembly.

  • Apply overlapping packing tape strips to the cracked glass, covering only the glass itself and not the frame.
  • Wear safety glasses to protect your eyes from potential flying debris during the repair.

Step 4 | Heat the bottom edge adhesive

Step 4 image

Careful when applying excessive heat, risk of damaging the screen and/or battery.

  • Apply an iOpener to the bottom edge of the screen for two minutes to soften the adhesive.
  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate.

Step 5 | Secure the Anti-Clamp

Step 5 image

Thumbnail 3

If not using the Anti-Clamp, skip these steps and proceed three steps down for an alternate method.

  • Pull the blue handle backwards to unlock the Anti-Clamp's arms.
  • Place your phone screen side up on a flat surface between the Anti-Clamp's arms, with the bottom edge hanging off.
  • Slide the arms over the left edge of your phone for access to the bottom edge.

Position the suction cups as close to the center of the bottom edge as possible, then squeeze them together to create suction.

Step 6 | Twist the handle

Step 6 image

Ensure the handle is fully locked by pulling it forward.

  • Turn the handle clockwise one full turn (360 degrees) or until the suction cups start stretching.
  • Keep the suction cups aligned as they stretch. If misalignment persists, remove the Anti-Clamp and apply tape for better adhesion.

Step 7 | Insert an opening pick

Step 7 image

Wait one minute for a gap to form between the screen and frame.

  • If no gap forms, twist the handle clockwise one quarter turn and wait another minute; apply more heat if the screen cools down.
  • Insert an opening pick into the formed gap, but do not insert it more than 3 mm to avoid damaging spring contacts.

Do not pull too hard on the opening pick as this may damage the spring contacts.

  • Pull the blue handle backwards to unlock the arms and remove the Anti-Clamp using the pull tabs on the suction cups.
  • Step 8 | Apply a suction cup

    Step 8 image

    Thumbnail 3

Grasp the suction handle firmly and pull up with steady force.

Apply more heat if a gap does not form immediately.

    • Insert an opening pick into the formed gap.

Step 10 | Prevent damage to your phone

    Step 10 image

    Thumbnail 2

Avoid damaging your phone by keeping pick insertion depth below 3 mm.

    • Monitor screen cable placement, located approximately halfway up left edge of phone.
    • Be cautious around spring contacts along perimeter to prevent bending or damage.

Step 11 | Separate the bottom edge adhesive

    Step 11 image

    Thumbnail 2
    Thumbnail 3

Slide the opening pick along the bottom edge to separate the adhesive.

    • Leave the pick in the bottom right corner to keep the adhesive separated.

Step 12 | Heat the right edge adhesive

    Step 12 image

Apply heat to the right edge of the screen using an iOpener heated for 2 minutes.

    • Alternatively, use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate, but be careful: extreme heat may damage the screen and/or battery.

Step 13 | Separate the right edge adhesive

    Step 13 image

    Thumbnail 2
    Thumbnail 3

Insert a second opening pick under the bottom right corner of the screen.

    • Slide the new pick to the top right corner to separate the adhesive securing the screen's right edge.
    • Leave the pick in the top right corner to prevent resealing.

Step 14 | Leave a pick in the bottom left corner

    Step 14 image

    Thumbnail 3

Insert the first opening pick into the bottom gap.

    • Slide a second opening pick under the screen edge, next to the first pick.
    • Push a third opening pick into place at the bottom left corner of the screen.

Leave all three picks in their positions to prevent adhesive reseal.

Step 15 | Heat the left edge adhesive

    Step 15 image

Apply a iOpener to the left edge of the screen for 2 minutes.

    • Or, use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate.
    • Be careful not to apply extreme heat, which can damage the screen and/or battery.

Step 16 | Separate the left edge adhesive

    Step 16 image

    Thumbnail 2
    Thumbnail 3

Insert the fourth opening pick at the bottom left corner of the screen.

    • Slide the new pick to the top left corner, separating the adhesive securing the left edge.
    • Leave the pick in place, ensuring the adhesive does not reseal.

Step 17 | Heat the top edge adhesive

    Step 17 image

Apply a iOpener to the top edge of the screen for 2 minutes.

Use caution with alternative heating methods (hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate) as extreme heat can damage the screen and/or battery.

Step 18 | Separate the top edge adhesive

    Step 18 image

    Thumbnail 2

Insert a fifth opening pick at the top left corner of the screen.

    • Move the pick towards the top right corner to release the adhesive.

Step 19 | Prop up the screen

    Step 19 image

    Thumbnail 2

Place a small box or stack of books beside your phone to prop up the screen.

    • Swing up the right edge of the screen, similar to opening a book.
    • If the screen feels stuck, go back and carefully remove any remaining adhesive with an opening pick.

Prop up the screen so you can access the cable without straining it.

Step 20 | Remove the screen cable cover

    Step 20 image

    Thumbnail 2
    Thumbnail 3

Use a opening tool to pry up the upper edge of the screen cable cover.

    • Continue to pry until the cover is removed completely.

Step 21 | Disconnect the screen

    Step 21 image
    Thumbnail 1
    Thumbnail 2
    Thumbnail 3

Insert the point of a spudger under the top right corner of the screen's press connector.

    • Gently pry up and disconnect the cable.
    • Remove the screen.

To reconnect, do not press down in the middle. Misalignment can bend pins and cause permanent damage.

Reconnect by aligning the press connector over its socket and gently pressing down on one side until it clicks into place, then press down on the other side.

    Step 22 | Screen information

    Step 22 image

The Pixel's screen is fragile and prone to damage from scratches or dents.

    • Handle the screen by its edges only.
    • When setting the screen down, ensure nothing contacts the bottom surface. A soft, lint-free cloth may be used as a protective backing.

    Step 23 | Reassembly information

    Reassembly note:

    • If your new screen has pre-installed adhesive, skip the next step and proceed with reassembly.
    • Otherwise, apply adhesive according to the separate guide for your old screen.

Remove all plastic liners or tape from the screen, including a large piece on the back, a small one near the front camera cutout, and perimeter liners.

    • Reconnect the screen cable and reinstall its cover.
    • Firmly press the screen into place; you should feel the clips engage.
    • Press firmly around the perimeter to secure with the new adhesive.

Optionally, apply even pressure to strengthen the adhesive bond.

    • Calibrate the fingerprint sensor according to this guide.
