Google Pixel 8 Pro Earpiece Speaker Replacement

This repair guide is from iFixit and hasn't been approved by Google. For more info on our guides, see our website. Follow these steps to replace the earpiece speaker in your Google Pixel 8 Pro if it's producing distorted sounds or no sound at all.

  • You may also need replacement screen adhesive for this repair.
  • This guide is written for the 5G mmWave antenna model of the Pixel 8 Pro. If you have a different version, skip steps referring to the 5G mmWave antenna.

Step 1 | Prepare your Pixel for disassembly

Allow the Pixel's battery to drain below 25% to prevent potential damage or fire.

  • Unplug all cables from the device.
  • Powers off the phone completely.
  • Press and hold the power and volume up buttons simultaneously to access the shutdown menu.

Step 2 | Mark your opening picks

Measure 3 mm from the tip of the opening pick.

  • Mark the pick with a permanent marker
  • or tape a coin to the pick, 3 mm from the tip

Step 3 | Tape over a cracked screen

Glass shards can cause injury; a cracked screen may require extra precautions.

  • Apply overlapping strips of packing tape only to the cracked glass, avoiding the frame.
  • Cover the entire screen with tape for added protection.
  • Wear safety glasses to protect your eyes from potential debris during repair.

Step 4 | Heat the bottom edge adhesive

Excessive heat can damage the screen and/or battery.

  • Apply an iOpener to the bottom edge of the screen for two minutes to soften adhesive.
  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate-but be cautious with extreme temperatures.

Step 5 | Secure the Anti-Clamp

For an alternate method, skip down three steps.

  • Anti-Clamp: Pull blue handle backwards to unlock arms.
  • Place phone screen up on object with bottom edge hanging off between arms.
  • Slide arms over left edge of phone for access to bottom edge.
  • Position suction cups near center of bottom edge.
  • Squeeze cups together to create suction.

Step 6 | Twist the handle

  • Pull the handle forward to lock the arms in place.
  • Turn the handle clockwise one full turn (360 degrees) or until suction cups stretch.
  • Ensure the stretched cups remain aligned, if they slip remove Anti-Clamp and apply tape for improved grip.

Step 7 | Insert an opening pick

Wait one minute for a gap to form between the screen and frame.

  • If the adhesive doesn't separate, twist the handle clockwise one quarter turn and wait another minute.
  • Apply more heat if the screen cools down.

Do not insert your opening pick more than 3 mm to avoid damaging the spring contacts.

  • Insert an opening pick into the gap.
  • Pull the blue handle backwards to unlock the arms and remove the Anti-Clamp using the pull tabs on the suction cups.

Step 8 | Apply a suction cup

Attach a suction handle to the centre of the screen's lower edge.

Step 9 | Insert an opening pick

Apply suction to the device using firm pressure.

  • A gap should form between the screen and frame.
  • If no gap forms, reapply heat and repeat.
  • Insert an opening pick into the gap.

Step 10 | Prevent damage to your phone

Insert your pick no more than 3 mm to avoid damaging your phone.

  • Be cautious when approaching the screen cable, located just below the left edge (about halfway up).
  • Avoid this area to prevent tearing the cable.

Exercise extra care around spring contacts along the perimeter, as they can be easily bent.

Step 11 | Separate the bottom edge adhesive

Insert an opening pick at the bottom edge and slide it along to break the adhesive.

  • Leave the pick in place near the bottom right corner.
  • This will prevent the adhesive from reforming.

Step 12 | Heat the right edge adhesive

Apply a iOpener to the right edge of the screen for 2 minutes.

Alternatively, use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate, but exercise caution as extreme heat can damage the screen and/or battery.

Step 13 | Separate the right edge adhesive

Insert a second opening pick under the bottom right corner of the screen.

  • Slide the new pick to the top right corner to separate the adhesive on the right edge of the screen.
  • Leave the pick in place at the top right corner to prevent resealing of the adhesive.

Step 14 | Leave a pick in the bottom left corner

Insert the third opening pick under the bottom edge of the screen.

  • Move the pick to the bottom left corner and slide it into place.
  • Leave the pick in position, as removing it may allow the adhesive to reseal.

Step 15 | Heat the left edge adhesive

Apply a iOpener to the left edge of the screen for 2 minutes.

  • If an iOpener is not available, use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate instead.
  • Be cautious when using high heat to avoid damaging the screen and/or battery.

Step 16 | Separate the left edge adhesive

Insert a fourth opening pick under the bottom left corner of the screen.

  • Slide the new pick to the top left corner, separating the adhesive on the screen's left edge.
  • Leave the pick in place at the top left corner to prevent resealing of the adhesive.

Step 17 | Heat the top edge adhesive

Apply a iOpener to the top edge of the screen for 2 minutes.

  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate.
  • Be careful not to apply extreme heat, as it can damage the screen and/or battery.

Step 18 | Separate the top edge adhesive

Insert a spudger into the gap between the top edge of the screen and the phone case.

  • Position it near the left corner, then slide it along the top edge towards the right corner.
  • Continue to apply gentle pressure until the adhesive is separated from the screen's top edge.

Step 19 | Prop up the screen

Place a support under your phone's left side to prop up the screen.

  • Swing up the right edge of the screen like a book cover.
  • If stuck, use an opening pick around the perimeter to release remaining adhesive.

Be careful not to strain or damage the screen cable.

Step 20 | Remove the screen cable cover

Use a opening tool to gently pry up the upper edge of the screen cable cover.

  • Continue prying until the cover is completely removed.

Step 21 | Disconnect the screen

Insert the point of a spudger under the top right corner of the screen's press connector.

  • Pry up and disconnect the cable.
  • Remove the screen.

When reconnecting a press connector, align it over its socket. Press down on one side until it clicks into place, then press down on the other side. Do not press in the middle or risk bending pins and causing permanent damage.

Handle the Pixel's screen with care, as its back is fragile and easily damaged.

  • Grip the screen by its edges to avoid direct contact.
  • When placing on a work surface, ensure nothing touches the bottom of the screen.
  • Consider using a soft, lint-free cloth under the screen for added protection.

Reattach screen cable and cover.

  • Screen clips: Firmly press screen into place on frame. You should feel it "pop" into place.
  • (Optional) Apply even pressure to strengthen adhesive bond.

Check for remaining plastic liners or tape before proceeding.

  • Use pull tabs to remove any found liners or tape.

Secure screen with new adhesive by firmly pressing around its perimeter.

Calibrate fingerprint sensor using separate guide.

Step 24 | Disconnect the 5G mmWave antenna

Be extremely cautious not to damage any surface-mounted components.

  • Only proceed if your phone has a 5G mmWave antenna; otherwise, skip the next four steps.
  • Insert the tip of a spudger under the top edge of the 5G mmWave press connector.
  • Gently pry up and disconnect the 5G mmWave antenna cable.

Step 25 | Heat the 5G mmWave antenna adhesive

Remove the 5G mmWave antenna cable from the midframe by applying heat.

  • Use caution: excessive heat may damage the battery.

    • Apply an iOpener to the cable for two minutes or use a heat gun/hair dryer/hot plate instead.
  • Remove three pieces of strong adhesive securing the cable to the midframe.

Step 26 | Separate the 5G mmWave antenna adhesive

Insert the flat end of a spudger between the 5G mmWave antenna cable and the midframe, just above the press connector.

  • Twist the spudger to separate the bottom of the cable from the midframe.

Step 27 | Peel up the 5G mmWave antenna

Hold the 5G mmWave antenna cable at the bottom and carefully lift it from the midframe.

During reassembly, avoid applying excessive force — risk of damage.

  • Press the cable back into its original position on the midframe.
  • If it doesn't adhere, use a small amount of thin double-sided tape to secure it in place.

Step 28 | Remove the graphite tape

Do not reuse the old graphite sheet; it may tear during removal.

  • Lift the graphite sheet using a spudger, starting from different areas to grip with your fingers.
  • If sections between rear cameras and battery tear, remove them by gripping the broken part.
  • Pull up and remove the entire graphite sheet.

When reassembling, install a new graphite sheet as described in this guide.

Step 29 | Move the USB‐C cover tape

Use the tip of a spudger to carefully lift the plastic shim that runs along the top of the USB-C port cover.

  • Remove and set aside or move out of the way, so you can access the USB-C port cover screws.

Step 30 | Reassembly information

During reassembly, replace the plastic shim that spans the midframe and loudspeaker.

  • If you don't have a replacement, force the old shim back into place.
  • Shim Liner: Remove the large rectangular liner from the shim.
  • Align the smaller foam piece with the bottom of the USB-C port cover and secure the shim in place using the flat end of a spudger.
  • Remove the remaining liner from the shim.

Step 31 | Remove the USB‐C port cover

Keep track of each screw and ensure it's replaced exactly where it was found.

  • Use a T3 Torx screwdriver to remove the two 5 mm- long 3IP Torx Plus screws securing the USB-C port cover.
  • Apply constant, downward force to prevent stripping, and use either a Torx Plus or standard Torx bit for these screws.
  • Remove the USB-C port cover.

Step 32 | Unfasten the midframe

Remove the midframe using a T3 Torx screwdriver.

  • There are 7 3IP Torx Plus screws holding it in place.
  • Each screw is 5 mm long.

Step 33 | Remove the midframe

Remove the midframe.

  • During reassembly, inspect the thermal pad for damage.
  • If damaged, replace it:
    • Remove the old thermal pad.
    • Clean the area with high-concentration (greater than 90%) isopropyl alcohol, and a microfiber or lint-free cloth.
    • Apply a new thermal pad.

Step 34 | Disconnect the battery

Use the point of a spudger to release the battery press connector.

  • Pry gently upwards on the connector using the pointed end of the spudger.
  • The connector should come loose, allowing you to disconnect it completely.

Step 35 | Disconnect the front camera

Insert the pointed end of a spudger into the front camera press connector and gently pry it loose.

Step 36 | Remove the front camera

Disconnect and remove the front camera assembly.

  • Release the screws holding it in place.
  • Gently pull out the camera module from its socket.

Step 37 | Disconnect the rear camera assembly

Use a spudger to gently pry up each of the three rear camera press connectors.

  • Pry the connectors at the top edge of the logic board.
  • Once lifted, the connectors should release from the logic board.

Step 38 | Unfasten the rear camera assembly

Hold the 5G mmWave antenna cable out of the way.

  • Remove two screws with a T3 Torx screwdriver:
    • 1. 3.5 mm long, 3IP Torx Plus (top left corner)
    • 2. 5 mm long, 3IP Torx Plus (top right corner)

Step 39 | Remove the rear camera assembly

  • Insert a spudger into the gap between the rear camera assembly and the frame.
  • Pry the rear camera assembly upwards to release it, then lift out.

Step 40 | Disconnect the antenna cable

Locate the black antenna cable coaxial connector on the top left corner of the logic board.

  • Tweezers, angled arm down, carefully insert under metal neck of coaxial connector.
  • Lift straight up to disconnect cable.

Avoid forcing the connector over its socket; if reconnection is difficult, reposition and try again.

Reconnect by holding connector in place over socket and pressing down with flat end of a spudger.

Step 41 | Unfasten the 5G mmWave antenna bracket

Use a T3 Torx screwdriver to remove the two 3IP Torx Plus screws.

  • The screws are secured on either side of the 5G mmWave antenna bracket.
  • Ensure each screw is only 5 mm long before removal.

Step 42 | Remove the 5G mmWave antenna bracket

Insert the tip of a spudger into one of the 5G mmWave antenna bracket's screw holes.

  • Pry up with the spudger to dislodge the bracket.
  • Remove the bracket.

When reassembling, insert the bracket at a downward angle so the spring contacts and foam pads press up against the 5G mmWave antenna, then press down to secure it.

Step 43 | Remove the 5G mmWave antenna

Remove the 5G mmWave antenna by lifting it gently out of its recess.

If the cable disconnects, carefully remove the antenna using your fingers; reconnect the antenna cable upon reassembly.

Step 44 | Unclip the antenna cable

Locate the black antenna cable on the left edge of the phone.

  • Gently pull the cable out of its clips.
  • Continue by disconnecting the daughterboard.

During reassembly, use a spudger to carefully push the cable back into place.

Move the black antenna cable out of its cutout on the bottom right corner of the daughterboard.

  • During reassembly, ensure the cable is properly seated in the cutout to avoid damage.
  • If the cable doesn't fit into the cutout, it may be damaged when you reinsert the rear camera assembly.

Step 46 | Unfasten the earpiece speaker

Remove the 3IP Torx Plus screw using a T3 Torx screwdriver.

  • The screw is located near the earpiece speaker.
  • It measures 3.5 mm long.

Step 47 | Remove the earpiece speaker

Insert the flat end of a spudger under the center of the earpiece speaker's bottom edge.

  • Pry the speaker up and remove it, applying some force as necessary.
  • You will hear a "pop" when the speaker is dislodged.

Reassembly: Insert the speaker edge with the orange gasket at an angle into its recess. Press down firmly until it clicks into place.

Step 48 | Disconnect the antenna cable

Insert the angled tweezers under the metal neck of the black antenna cable coaxial connector, located at the bottom of the earpiece speaker.

  • Lift the tweezers straight up to disconnect the cable.

Unclip the antenna cable from its metal clip.

Step 50 | Remove the antenna cable tape

Remove the antenna cable from its groove in the earpiece speaker by lifting it out.

  • Use a tool (such as tweezers) or your fingers to carefully pull away the securing yellow tape.

Step 51 | Remove the antenna cable

Remove the antenna cable from its groove.

  • Pull the cable out.
  • Disconnect the cable completely.

Step 52 | Remove the antenna board

Remove the L-shaped antenna board from the earpiece speaker using a spudger.

During reassembly, ensure the antenna socket is aligned with the cable groove edge.

  • If your replacement speaker has adhesive pre-installed, remove the plastic liner and press the board into place.
  • Otherwise, apply thin double-sided tape (e.g. Tesa Tape) to secure the board to the speaker.

Step 53 | You're left with the earpiece speaker

The remaining component is the earpiece speaker.
