Google Pixel 8 Pro Battery Replacement

Lithium-ion batteries have a limited lifespan and may swell over time.

  • Replace the battery in your Google Pixel 8 Pro if it's dead or worn out, or won't hold a charge.
  • Battery Safety: Take precautions when working with swollen batteries.

You'll need replacement screen adhesive for this repair. Note: This guide is based on the 5G mmWave antenna model. If you have the non-mmWave version, skip relevant steps.

Step 1 | Prepare your Pixel for disassembly

Charge your Pixel's battery below 25% to prevent potential damage or fires.

  • Disconnect all cables from your phone.
  • Power down your device completely by pressing and holding the power button and volume up button simultaneously.

Step 2 | Mark your opening picks

Marking the opening pick is crucial for preventing damage.

  • Permanent marker: Measure 3mm from the tip and mark the opening pick.
  • Tape method: Alternatively, tape a coin to the pick 3mm from the tip.

Inserting a pick too far can damage your device.

Step 3 | Tape over a cracked screen

Glass shards can cause injury, complicate disassembly, or both.

  • Apply overlapping strips of packing tape only to the cracked glass, covering the entire screen.
  • Make sure not to stick tape to the phone frame.
  • Prioritize eye safety: Wear protective safety glasses during this repair to prevent injury from loose glass fragments.

Step 4 | Heat the bottom edge adhesive

Be cautious when applying heat to prevent damage.

  • Apply an iOpener to the bottom edge of the screen for 2 minutes to soften adhesive.
  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate (but be careful not to overheat).

The adhesive softens, making it easier to separate the screen from the frame using a plastic spudger.

Step 5 | Secure the Anti-Clamp

Use the Anti-Clamp for easier opening: pull blue handle backwards to unlock arms.

  • Place phone screen up on an object with bottom edge hanging off between Anti-Clamp's arms.
  • Slide Anti-Clamp's arms over left edge of phone, exposing bottom edge.

Suction cups must be positioned close to center for secure attachment.

  • Squeeze suction cups together to create vacuum seal.

Step 6 | Twist the handle

Lock the arms by pulling the handle forward.

  • Turn the handle clockwise one full turn (360 degrees) to stretch the suction cups.
  • Ensure the cups remain aligned; if they slip, use tape or remove the Anti-Clamp.

Step 7 | Insert an opening pick

Wait one minute for a gap to form between the screen and frame.

If the adhesive doesn't separate, twist the handle clockwise by 1/4 turn and wait another minute. Apply more heat if the screen cools down.

  • Insert an opening pick into the gap, taking care not to insert it more than 3 mm to avoid damaging the spring contacts.

Pull the blue handle backwards to unlock the arms and remove the Anti-Clamp using the pull tabs on the suction cups.

Step 8 | Apply a suction cup

Attach a suction handle to the screen's lower central area.

Step 9 | Insert an opening pick

Apply strong, steady pressure to the suction handle.

  • A gap should form between the screen and .
  • If no gap forms, reapply heat and try again.
  • Insert an opening pick into the gap.

Step 10 | Prevent damage to your phone

Avoid damaging your phone by not inserting the pick more than 3 mm when separating the screen adhesive.

  • Mark the area where the screen cable is located, about halfway up the left edge of the phone.
  • Be extremely cautious in this area to prevent tearing the screen cable.
  • Avoid bending around the perimeter of the phone's many spring contacts; exercise great care here.

Step 11 | Separate the bottom edge adhesive

Position the opening pick at the bottom edge and slide it along to loosen the adhesive.

  • Leaving the pick in place will keep the adhesive separated and prevent it from resealing.

Step 12 | Heat the right edge adhesive

Apply a heated iOpener to the right edge of the screen for 2 minutes.

  • Or, use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate - but be careful, as extreme heat can damage the screen and/or battery.

Step 13 | Separate the right edge adhesive

Insert a second opening pick at the bottom right corner of the screen.

  • Slide the new pick up to the top right corner to loosen the adhesive on the right edge.
  • Leave the pick in place to prevent resealing of the adhesive.

Step 14 | Leave a pick in the bottom left corner

Insert a third opening pick under the screen's bottom edge.

  • Slide this pick down to the bottom left corner.
  • Leave it in place to keep the adhesive from resealing.

Step 15 | Heat the left edge adhesive

Extreme heat may damage the screen and/or battery.

  • Apply a heated iOpener to the left edge of the screen for two minutes.
  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate - but be cautious not to apply excessive heat.

Step 16 | Separate the left edge adhesive

Insert a pick under the bottom left corner of the screen.

  • Slide it up to the top left corner, separating the adhesive securing the left edge.
  • Leave the pick in place to prevent resealing.

Step 17 | Heat the top edge adhesive

Apply a heated iOpener to the top edge of the screen for 2 minutes.

  • Or use an alternative heat source (such as a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate), but be extremely cautious not to apply excessive heat that may damage the screen and/or battery.

Step 18 | Separate the top edge adhesive

Insert an additional opening pick at the left corner under the top edge of the screen.

  • Slide this new pick towards the top right corner to loosen the adhesive along the screen's top edge.

Step 19 | Prop up the screen

Place a small box or stack of books on the left side of your phone to prop up the screen.

  • Swing up the right edge of the screen, as if opening a book.
  • If stuck, use an opening pick to carefully separate any remaining adhesive along the perimeter.
  • Prop up the screen for safe access to the screen cable.

Step 20 | Remove the screen cable cover

Use a opening tool to pry up the upper edge of the screen cable cover.

  • Remove the cover.

Step 21 | Disconnect the screen

Insert the point of a spudger under the top right corner of the screen's press connector.

  • Gently pry up and disconnect the cable.
  • Remove the screen.

When reconnecting a press connector, align it over its socket and gently press down on one side until it clicks into place. Then press down on the other side, avoiding the middle. Misaligned connectors can cause permanent damage to pins.

Fragile screen: small scratches or dents can cause damage.

  • Grip the screen by its edges when handling to prevent damage.
  • Place the screen on a soft, lint-free cloth to avoid touching the bottom of the screen.

Reconnect the screen cable and reinstall its cover.

  • Press firmly around the perimeter of the screen to secure it with the new adhesive.
  • Firmly press the screen into place on the frame, you should feel the clips "pop" into place.
  • Apply pressure evenly to the phone to strengthen the adhesive bond (optional).

Note: If a new screen with pre-installed adhesive is used, skip the following steps:

  • Check for and remove any plastic liners or tape from the old screen using the pull tabs.
  • Look for a large piece of plastic covering the back, a small one near the front camera cutout, and adhesive liners around the perimeter.

Calibrate the fingerprint sensor by following this guide.

Step 24 | Disconnect the 5G mmWave antenna

Careful not to damage surface mounted components.

  • Insert spudger tip under press connector top edge.
  • Pry up and gently disconnect the 5G mmWave antenna cable.

Step 25 | Heat the 5G mmWave antenna adhesive

Remove the 5G mmWave antenna cable from the midframe.

  • Apply heat to the adhesive using an iOpener for two minutes.
  • Or use a heat gun, hot plate, or hair dryer-but be cautious of potential damage to the battery due to excessive heat.

Step 26 | Separate the 5G mmWave antenna adhesive

Insert the flat end of a spudger between the 5G mmWave antenna cable and the midframe, just above the press connector.

  • Twist the spudger to separate the bottom of the cable from the midframe.

Step 27 | Peel up the 5G mmWave antenna

Remove the 5G mmWave antenna cable by gently peeling it from the midframe.

  • In reassembly, press the cable back into place on the midframe.
  • If it does not stick, apply thin, double-sided tape for extra security.

Step 28 | Remove the graphite tape

Remove the graphite sheet, connecting the upper battery, midframe, and rear cameras.

  • Use a spudger to lift the sheet under different parts until you can grip it with your fingers.
  • If sections tear between the rear cameras and battery, grip and remove them separately.

The graphite sheet may tear during removal; proceed with caution.

Peel up and remove the entire sheet for complete access.

Do not reuse the old graphite sheet. Follow replacement instructions in this guide.

Step 29 | Move the USB‐C cover tape

Insert the tip of a spudger under the plastic shim along the top edge of the USB-C port cover.

  • Lift the shim gently and remove it, placing it aside or moving it out of the way.
  • This will allow access to the screws securing the USB-C port cover.

Locate the plastic shim beneath the midframe and loudspeaker.

  • If replacing, remove the larger rectangular liner from the new shim.
  • Position the shim so that the smaller foam piece aligns with the USB-C port cover.

If no replacement is available, press the old shim back into place carefully.

  • Use a spudger to firmly press down along the entire shim, ensuring secure attachment.
  • Remove any remaining liner from the shim.

Step 31 | Remove the USB‐C port cover

Keep track of each screw and ensure it returns exactly to its original position.

  • The Pixel 8 Pro uses Torx Plus screws, but standard Torx bits will also work.
  • To prevent stripping, apply consistent downward force when unscrewing.
  • Use a T3 Torx screwdriver to remove the two 5 mm-long 3IP Torx Plus screws securing the USB-C port cover.
  • Remove the cover once the screws are out.

Step 32 | Unfasten the midframe

Remove the midframe using a T3 Torx screwdriver.

  • There are seven 5 mm-long 3IP Torx Plus screws to remove.

Step 33 | Remove the midframe

Remove the midframe.

  • During reassembly, inspect the thermal pad's condition.
  • If damaged, remove it carefully.
  • Clean the area with high-concentration isopropyl alcohol (greater than 90%) and a microfiber or lint-free cloth.
  • Apply a new thermal pad to complete the repair.

Step 34 | Disconnect the battery

Use the point of a spudger to pry up the battery cable press connector.

Step 35 | Heat the battery adhesive

Excessive heat can cause irreversible damage to your phone's battery.

  • Place the device on a stable workspace, phone side down.
  • Apply gentle heat to the left back cover using a hairdryer or heat gun, focusing on areas near top and bottom edges of the battery.

Avoid overheating; the battery is prone to thermal damage when exposed to temperatures above safe operating limits.

Step 36 | Apply isopropyl alcohol

Flip your phone back over and place it face down on a stable workspace.

  • Apply a few drops of highly-concentrated isopropyl alcohol along the right edge of the battery.
  • Tilt the phone to allow the alcohol to flow towards the adhesive on the top and bottom edges of the battery.
  • Wait one minute for the alcohol to effectively soften the adhesive.

Step 37 | Insert an opening pick

Insert the opening pick's flat side into the gap at the right edge of the battery, working alongside the phone's frame.

Step 38 | Separate the battery adhesive

Do not crease or bend the battery as it can leak hazardous chemicals and/or ignite.

  • Firmly secure your phone with one hand and pry the battery up with a pick using your free hand.
  • Maintain constant pressure until the battery separates from the frame, requiring multiple rounds of heat and isopropyl alcohol if necessary.
  • If separation does not occur after two minutes of constant pressure, reapply heat and isopropyl alcohol and attempt again.

Step 39 | Remove the battery

Use a opening pick to lift the battery.

  • Separate the remaining adhesive from the battery.
  • Remove the battery once the adhesive is released.

When reassembling, refer to this guide for proper adhesive removal and battery installation procedures.
