Google Pixel 7a Wide Camera Replacement

Note that any repair may compromise your phone's water resistance, and reapplying adhesive correctly is crucial to retaining this feature.

  • This guide was created by iFixit staff, but has not been endorsed by Google. Learn more about our guides here.
  • Follow these steps to remove or replace the wide camera on your Google Pixel 7a if it's damaged or malfunctioning.
  • If you have a Verizon model (G0DZQ) with 5G mmWave antenna, some photos may differ, but the procedure remains the same.
  • If your battery is swollen, take necessary precautions before proceeding.
  • You'll need replacement adhesive to complete this repair successfully.

Step 1 | Prepare your phone for disassembly

Step 1 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2

A charged lithium-ion battery poses a potential safety risk; discharge to at least 25% capacity beforehand.

  • Disconnect all cables from the device.
  • Fully power down the device for safe repair procedures.

Step 2 | Remove the SIM card tray

Step 2 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Insert a SIM eject tool, bit, or straightened paper clip into the SIM card tray hole.

  • Press the SIM eject tool into the hole to eject the SIM card tray.
  • Remove the SIM card tray.

Step 3 | Soften the adhesive

Step 3 image

Be cautious not to apply excessive heat — risk of damage to the screen, rear cover, or battery.

  • Apply a heated iOpener to the bottom edge of the rear cover for three minutes.
  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate to warm the rear cover instead.

Only heat the phone until it is just hot to the touch — extreme temperatures can cause damage.

Step 4 | Secure an Anti-Clamp

Step 4 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

  • If not using the Anti-Clamp, skip next steps for alternate method.

  • Pull the blue handle of the Anti-Clamp backward to unlock its arms.
  • Slide the arms over the phone's bottom edge, with one suction cup on the rear cover and one on the screen.
  • Squeeze the cups together to create suction.

Step 5 | Use the Anti-Clamp to create a gap

Step 5 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3
  • Pull the blue handle forward to lock the arms.
  • Turn the handle clockwise one full turn (360 degrees) until the suction cups begin to stretch.
  • If the cups slip, remove the Anti-Clamp and apply tape for secure adhesion.

Step 6 | Insert an opening pick using the Anti-Clamp

Step 6 image

The iOpener may lose heat while setting up the Anti-Clamp, so reheat it as needed.

  • Position your phone on an object to maintain a level surface within the Anti-Clamp's arms.
  • Wait for 1 minute or until the adhesive separates at the bottom edge of the phone.

If no gap forms, turn the handle clockwise by 1/4 turn and wait another minute. Apply more heat if necessary.

  • Insert an opening pick into the gap between the rear cover and frame.
  • Release the suction cups using their pull-tabs and set the Anti-Clamp aside.

Step 7 | Insert an opening pick using a suction handle

Step 7 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Ensure an opening pick has not already been inserted using the Anti-Clamp.

  • Attach a suction handle to the center of the bottom edge of the rear cover.
  • Pull up on the suction handle with steady force until a gap forms between the rear cover and frame.
  • Insert the tip of an opening pick into the gap.
  • Remove the suction handle.

Step 8 | Adhesive information

Step 8 image

Step 9 | Angle the opening pick

Step 9 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Angle the opening pick's tip away from the frame.

  • Keep all opening picks angled upward while slicing.
  • Slide the pick to the bottom left corner of the rear cover.

Leave this pick in place to prevent adhesive resealing.

Step 10 | Separate the bottom edge adhesive

Step 10 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2
  • Insert a second opening pick at the bottom left corner.
  • Slide the new pick to the bottom right corner of the rear cover to separate the adhesive.
  • Leave this pick in place to prevent resealing of the adhesive.

Step 11 | Soften the right edge adhesive

Step 11 image

Avoid overheating your phone.

  • Apply a heated iOpener to the right edge of the rear cover for two minutes.
  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer or heat gun to warm the rear cover.
  • Some users prefer using a hot plate instead; however, be cautious not to overheat.

Step 12 | Separate the right edge adhesive

Step 12 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Do not insert the pick deeper than 5 mm along the right edge, or risk damaging the wireless charging coil.

  • Mark a pick with a permanent marker 5 mm from its tip for reference.
  • Insert a third opening pick in the bottom right corner of the rear cover.
  • Slide the pick up the right edge, stopping when you reach the camera bar to separate the adhesive.
  • Leave the pick in place to prevent resealing of the adhesive.

Step 13 | Soften the left edge adhesive

Step 13 image

Avoid overheating the phone.

  • Apply the iOpener to the left edge of the rear cover for two minutes.

  • Insert another pick in the bottom left corner of the rear cover.
  • Slide this pick up the left edge to separate the adhesive, stopping at the camera bar.
  • Leave this pick in place to prevent resealing.

Step 15 | Soften the top edge adhesive

Step 15 image

Apply a heated iOpener to the top edge of the rear cover for two minutes.

  • Or use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate to warm the rear cover.
  • Do not overheat the phone, risk of damage or battery explosion.

Step 16 | Separate the antenna bracket adhesive

Step 16 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Insert a fifth opening pick into the top left corner of the rear cover, between 8 mm and 10 mm deep.

  • Be careful not to insert the pick too far or you may damage the antenna housing.

  • If it doesn't fit easily, try inserting it near the camera bar instead.

Slide the pick halfway across the top edge to separate the antenna bracket adhesive. Stop at the midway point along the top edge.

Step 17 | Separate the remaining top edge adhesive

Step 17 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2
