Google Pixel 6a Screen Replacement

Discharge battery below 25% before disassembling for fire risk reduction.

  • This guide is not endorsed by Google and can be found on our website.
  • Replace the screen on your Google Pixel 6a using this guide.

Precautions: If battery is swollen, take extra care. Reinstall original fingerprint reader if it's missing from new replacement screen and recalibrate for functionality.

  • Required tools and materials include replacement adhesive.

Step 1 | Safety Precautions

A fully charged battery may ignite if damaged during the repair.

  • Allow the battery to drain below 25% before starting this procedure.
  • Power off your phone and disconnect all cables.

Step 2 | Screen removal information

Never pry at the screen seam, as it separates the screen from the rest of the phone.

  • Pry at the bezel seam, located where the plastic bezel meets the frame, held in place by plastic clips.

Step 3 | Anti-Clamp instructions

Step 3 image

Before proceeding, ensure your screen is not cracked and cover it with clear packing tape if necessary.

  • For using the Anti-Clamp, follow next three steps; otherwise, skip ahead for alternate method instructions.
  • Pull the blue handle backwards to unlock the Anti-Clamp's arms.
  • Slide the unlocked arms over the right edge of your phone.

If the surface is too slippery, use tape to create a grippier surface for the Anti-Clamp to hold onto.

  • Position one suction cup near the front middle of the right edge and the other at the back.
  • Squeeze both cups together to apply suction.

Step 4

Lock the arms by pulling the blue handle forward.

  • Turn the handle clockwise for 360 degrees or until the cups start to stretch.
  • Ensure the suction cups remain aligned; if they slip, loosen them and realign the arms.

Step 5

Step 5 image

Heat an iOpener or equivalent tool to apply heat through the Anti-Clamp arms.

  • The heated tool should rest on the right edge of the phone, applying gentle pressure.
  • Proceed with caution when using extreme heat, as it can damage the display or internal battery.

Wait one minute to allow the adhesive to release and create a gap.

  • Insert an opening pick under the screen frame once the gap is large enough.
  • Do not over-rotate the Anti-Clamp, as excessive force can cause damage. Apply gentle, incremental pressure:

    • Apply more heat to the area and rotate the handle clockwise half a turn.
    • Wait one minute between turns and let the Anti-Clamp and time do the work for you.

Step 6 | Heat the right edge

Step 6 image

Apply gentle heat to the right edge of the screen using an iOpener (2 minutes), or alternative methods like a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate (be cautious not to overheat):

  • Ice pack on the right edge for 2 minutes.
  • Use a hair dryer at low setting, keeping it moving and out of contact with phone surfaces.
  • Heat gun or hot plate – keep a safe distance to prevent overheating (risk of heat damage).

Step 7 | Insert an opening pick

Step 7 image

Use caution when handling fragile screens.

  • Apply a suction cup near the right edge's center.
  • Pull up on the suction cup with steady force to create a gap between bezel and frame.
  • Insert an opening pick into the gap.
  • Older phones may require extra heat for removal.

    • If screen is cracked, apply clear packing tape for better suction.
    • Alternatively, use strong tape instead of suction cup.
    • Last resort: superglue the suction cup to the broken screen.

Step 8 | Reposition the opening pick

Step 8 image

Apply suction and pivot the pick upwards to a steep angle.

  • Pry carefully while pushing the pick into the bezel seam.
  • Only insert the pick up to 3.5 mm to avoid damaging internals.

Step 9 | Release the right clips

Step 9 image

  • Slide a tool (pick) along the right edge of the device to release the plastic clips holding the bezel in place.
  • Move the pick to the top-right edge for the next step.

Step 10 | Release the top right clips

Step 10 image

Thumbnail 3

Insert the opening pick into the top-right corner and rotate it to release the clips.

  • Leave the opening pick in place to prevent re-locking of the clips.
  • Do not insert the pick more than 4 mm to avoid damaging the phone's internals.

Step 11 | Release the top clips

Step 11 image

Thumbnail 3

Insert a new opening pick into the existing gap.

  • Slide the pick along the top edge to disengage the clips.
  • Avoid damaging the camera lens by only inserting the pick up to 3 mm when cutting around it.

Step 12 | Release the top left clips

Step 12 image

Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Insert an opening pick into the top-left corner.

  • Rotate the pick around the corner to release the clips.
  • Leave the pick in place to prevent relocking.

Step 13 | Release the left clips

Step 13 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Insert a new opening pick into the gap, only up to 3 mm deep to avoid damaging internals.

  • Slide the pick along the left edge to release the clips.
  • Repeat the process for the remaining edge, rotating and sliding as needed.

If resistance remains around edges, use an opening pick to release any remaining clips.

Step 14 | Reposition the screen

Step 14 image

Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Avoid twisting the screen or moving it too far from the frame.

  • Lift the right edge of the screen up and towards the left side, like opening a book.
  • Rest the screen upside down and parallel to the frame before continuing.

Step 15 | Remove the display cable bracket

Step 15 image

Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Failure to properly install the display cable bracket can cause sparks and logic board damage.

  • Use tweezers to bend the bottom of the display cable bracket upwards, releasing the metal clip.
  • Remove the display cable bracket.

During reassembly, insert the top side of the bracket first before pressing down the other side to avoid sparks and damage.

Step 16 | Disconnect the display cable

Step 16 image

Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Careful handling required to avoid damaging surrounding components.

  • Insert an opening pick under the bottom right edge of the display cable press connector, above the nearby screw hole.
  • Pry up and disconnect the display cable press connector.

When re-attaching: align carefully and press one side until it clicks, then repeat on the other. Avoid pressing the middle and do not bend the pins.

Step 17 | Screen information

Step 17 image

The back of the Pixel's screen is extremely delicate and prone to damage from minor scratches or dents.

  • Always handle the screen by its edges to avoid applying pressure to the fragile areas.
  • When placing the screen on your work surface, ensure nothing touches the bottom, and consider supporting it on a soft, lint-free cloth to prevent damage.

Step 18 | Reassembly information

Step 18 image

Thumbnail 2

Remove the screen.

  • During reassembly:
    • If a replacement screen was installed, remove any remaining liners from the front-facing camera hole and sensor cutout.
    • Verify if the proximity sensor's rubber gasket is present; if not, inspect the back of the removed screen for its possible attachment.

Power on your phone to test it before proceeding with reassembly, then power off again.

  • Reinstall the display cable bracket.
  • Replace the screen adhesive; follow the guide provided for correct installation.
  • If a new screen is being installed, calibrate the fingerprint sensor according to this guide.
