Google Pixel 6a Battery Replacement

Discharge battery below 25% before disassembly to reduce risk of fire from accidental damage.

  • This guide was made using the Verizon GB62Z model, with a 5G mmWave antenna. Ignore steps mentioning this antenna if your device differs.
  • Replace battery in Google Pixel 6a, noting that some devices have a separate battery performance program (read more).
  • Take precautions if your original battery is swollen and require replacement adhesive to complete the repair.

Step 1 | Safety Precautions

Never attempt a repair with a fully charged battery — risk of fire.

  • Allow the battery to drain below 25% before starting this repair.
  • Fully power off your device and disconnect all cables.

Step 2 | Screen removal information

Do not pry on the screen seam, as it may cause damage.

  • Pry at the bezel seam to release the plastic bezel.

Plastic clips hold the bezel in place, located along this seam.

Step 3 | Anti-Clamp instructions

Optional: Use Anti-Clamp by following these steps.

  • (Alternate method below)
  • To unlock the Anti-Clamp, pull the blue handle backwards.
  • Slide the arms over the right edge of your phone.
  • Position one suction cup on the front and one on the back near the middle of the right edge.
  • Squeeze the cups together for suction.

If surface is too slippery, use tape to create a grippier surface.

Grasp the blue handle firmly and pull it forward to secure the arms.

  • Rotate the handle clockwise by at least 360 degrees, or until you notice the suction cups stretching.
  • Verify that the suction cups remain properly aligned; if they begin to misalign, loosen them slightly and realign the arms.

Apply iOpener, hair dryer, or heat gun to the right edge of the phone.

Proceed with care as extreme heat can damage display and/or internal battery.

Wait one minute for adhesive release and opening gap creation.

  • Insert an opening pick under the screen frame when a large enough gap is present.
  • If insufficient gap, apply more heat and rotate the handle clockwise half a turn.
  • Do not crank more than half a turn at a time or exceed one minute between turns.

Step 6 | Heat the right edge

Excessive heat can cause permanent damage to your phone's display and battery.

  • Apply a heated iOpener to the right edge of the screen for two minutes.
  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate, but avoid overheating the device.

Step 7 | Insert an opening pick

Apply a suction cup near the center of the right edge.

  • Pull up on the suction cup with strong force to create a gap.
  • Insert an opening pick into the gap.
  • If stuck, try applying more heat or covering the screen with clear packing tape.
  • As a last resort, superglue the suction cup to the broken screen.

Step 8 | Reposition the opening pick

Insert pick up to 3.5mm only.

  • Pivot the pick upwards at a steep angle while still applying suction.
  • Carefully push the pick inwards to reposition it within the bezel seam.

Step 9 | Release the right clips

Slide the pick along the right edge to release the plastic clips.

Position the pick at the top-right edge for the next step.

Step 10 | Release the top right clips

Insert the opening pick into the top-right corner, rotating it to release the clips.

  • Leave the pick in place to prevent re-locking.
  • Only insert up to 4mm to avoid damage to internal components.

Step 11 | Release the top clips

Insert a new opening pick into the gap.

  • Slide the pick along the top edge to release the clips.
  • (Note: When slicing around the front camera, insert the pick no more than 3 mm to avoid damaging the lens.)

Step 12 | Release the top left clips

Insert the opening pick into the top-left corner and rotate it to release the clips.

  • Leave the opening pick in place to hold the clips open.

Step 13 | Release the left clips

Insert a new opening pick into the gap created earlier.

  • Slide the pick along the left edge to release the clips.
  • Only insert the pick up to 3 mm to avoid damaging the internals.

If resistance remains around the edges, use an opening pick to release remaining clips.

  • Repeat the rotating and sliding procedure for the remaining edge.
  • The screen should now be separated from the frame.

Step 14 | Reposition the screen

Do not attempt to fully remove the screen yet as it is still attached via a flex cable.

  • Lift the right edge of the screen up and towards the left side, similar to opening a book.
  • Rest the screen upside down and parallel to the frame before proceeding further.

Avoid twisting or moving the screen too far from the frame to prevent damage to the flex cable.

Step 15 | Remove the display cable bracket

Failure to properly secure the display cable bracket during reassembly may cause sparks and logic board damage.

  • Use tweezers to bend the bottom side of the display cable bracket upwards, releasing the metal clip.
  • Remove the display cable bracket.

During reassembly, insert the top side of the bracket first and then press down the other side to secure it properly.

Step 16 | Disconnect the display cable

Careful handling is required to avoid damaging nearby components.

  • Insert the tip of an opening pick under the bottom right edge of the display cable press connector.
  • Pry up and disconnect the display cable press connector.

When re-attaching, align carefully and press down on one side until it clicks into place, then repeat on the other. Avoid pressing in the middle to prevent pin bending and damage.

Step 17 | Screen information

The Pixel's rear screen is extremely delicate and easily damaged.

  • Always handle the screen by its edges to prevent damage.
  • Place the screen on a soft, lint-free surface to prevent contact with foreign objects.

Step 18 | Reassembly information

Remove any remaining liners from the front-facing camera hole and sensor cutout on the replacement screen.

  • Remove the screen.
  • Check for a missing proximity sensor rubber gasket; it may be stuck to the old screen's back. Replace if necessary.
  • Temporarily connect the new screen, power on your phone, and test its functionality.
  • Power off your phone before continuing with reassembly.
  • Reinstall the display cable bracket.
  • Follow the guide to replace the screen adhesive.
  • If installing a new screen, calibrate the fingerprint sensor using this guide.

Step 19 | Remove the silver tape

Do not remove the entire silver tape; you only need to peel back the section bridging the midframe and top speaker.

  • Use tweezers to carefully lift the bridge of the silver tape.

Peel back the protective tape covering the screws adjacent to the USB-C port using a pair of tweezers.

Step 21 | Unfasten the midframe

Acquire a T3 Torx screwdriver.

  • Remove eight 4.3 mm screws.
  • Remove five 2.9 mm screws.
  • Remove two 4.9 mm screws.
  • Remove one 4.6 mm screw.

Step 22 | Release the midframe clips

Insert a spudger between the top of the midframe and the , near the front camera.

  • Pry up with the spudger to release the top of the midframe from its clips.

Insert plastic spudger between bottom left midframe & frame.

Apply gentle prying force upwards to release midframe's clips.

Step 24 | Remove the midframe

Remove the midframe.

You may feel resistance due to thermal paste bonding; this is normal.

  • Power on and test all functions during reassembly.
  • Be sure to power your phone back down before continuing work.

Step 25 | Remove the thermal paste

Scrape off excess thermal paste with a spudger's flat end.

  • Clean any remaining thermal paste with isopropyl alcohol and either a coffee filter or lint-free cloth.
  • Repeat the cleaning process for midframe thermal paste.

Thermal paste residue can affect cooling performance.

  • Reapply thermal paste according to reassembly guide during device reassembly.

Step 26 | Disconnect the battery

Disconnect the battery's press connector by prying it loose with a spudger.

Step 27 | Unfasten the 5G mmWave antenna bracket

Check if your device has a 5G mmWave antenna; skip ahead if not.

  • Use a T3 Torx screwdriver to remove the 2.9 mm screw securing the 5G mmWave antenna bracket.

  • Use tweezers or fingers to gently pull the bracket toward the right edge.
  • Pull until the bracket's clip releases, then remove it from the phone.

Step 29 | Disconnect the 5G mmWave antenna

Disconnect the 5G mmWave antenna's press connector using a spudger.

Ensure your device has a battery spacer before proceeding.

  • Insert an opening pick between the plastic battery spacer and the battery.
  • Slide the pick forward while prying to separate enough of the spacer to grip with tweezers.

Hold the battery spacer and gently pull it away from the device.

  • Use a pair of tweezers for better control, if preferred.

Remove the battery spacer.

  • If not included with your replacement battery, transfer it to your new battery.

Step 34 | Separate the battery pull tabs

Use tweezers or your fingers to carefully pry the plastic pull tabs away from the battery.

Step 35 | Heat the battery's adhesive

Apply heat to the device's back using an iOpener, a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate for 2 minutes.

Be cautious not to overheat the phone, as the battery is prone to thermal damage.

Step 36 | Separate the battery's adhesive

Separate the battery from its mounting using a sawing motion on the tabs.

Work slowly to avoid losing your grip and accidentally pulling the tab upwards.

  • If the adhesive doesn't release easily, apply more heat and wait for it to loosen.

Step 37 | Remove the battery

Separate remaining adhesive by tilting battery out of device.

Remove battery from device.

Do not reinstall a damaged or deformed battery — potential safety hazard.

  • Secure new battery with pre-cut adhesive or double-sided tape. Apply adhesive to designated areas within the device, not directly onto battery.
  • Press new battery firmly into place.

During reassembly: reconnect battery temporarily to align it correctly; disconnect after seating and fold pull tabs back into place.
