Google Pixel 6 Screen Replacement

Caution: The Pixel 6 contains class 1 lasers and invisible infrared laser emissions during disassembly.

  • Ensure your new replacement screen comes with the fingerprint reader attached. If not, reinstall the original one and recalibrate it for functionality.
  • If using an aftermarket screen and sensor, be aware of potential issues with the fingerprint recalibration tool.
  • Replace a deformed frame to ensure correct mounting and prevent damage from uneven pressure.

Note: If your battery is swollen, take precautions and discharge it below 25% before disassembling to minimize thermal event risk.

  • Verify you have the correct replacement screen part, as some come without a pre-installed safety plastic frame (chassis).
  • Retain water resistance by reapplying adhesive carefully; note that your device will lose its IP rating.

Before starting, ensure you have replacement adhesives for the screen to maintain water resistance.

Step 1 | Safety precautions

A fully charged battery can be hazardous if damaged, so allow it to drain below 25%.

  • Power off your phone completely.
  • Unplug all cables from the device.

Step 2 | Anti-Clamp instructions

Step 2 image

  • Use the Anti-Clamp as shown below or skip ahead three steps for an alternate method.

If your screen is cracked, apply clear packing tape to ensure suction cup adhesion.

  • Pull the blue handle backwards to unlock the Anti-Clamp's arms.
  • Slide the arms over either edge of your phone (left or right).

To secure the suction cups, squeeze them together.

  • Position suction cups near the bottom edge: one on the front, and one on the back.
  • If your phone's surface is too slippery, use tape to create a better grip.

Step 3

Lock the arms by pulling the blue handle forward.

  • Turn the handle clockwise until it reaches 360 degrees or the cups start to stretch.
  • Keep the suction cups aligned; if they begin to slip out of alignment, loosen them slightly and realign the arms.

Step 4

Excessive heat can damage display or internal battery.

  • Apply heat using an iOpener, hair dryer, or heat gun to the Anti-Clamp arms.
  • Fold the iOpener to fit along the phone's bottom edge.

Wait one minute for adhesive release and opening gap creation.

  • Insert an opening pick under the screen frame when a large enough gap is formed.
  • Alternatively, if the gap is insufficient:
    • Apply more heat to the area.
    • Rotate the handle clockwise by half a turn and wait one minute before repeating.

Step 5 | Loosen the display adhesive

Step 5 image

Apply a iOpener to the screen and let it sit for at least 3 minutes.

  • If an iOpener is unavailable, use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate, but exercise caution to avoid overheating the device.

Step 6 | Insert an opening pick

Step 6 image

Apply a suction handle to the bottom edge of the warm screen.

  • For badly cracked screens, cover with clear packing tape for better adhesion.
  • If necessary, use strong tape or superglue the suction handle in place.

Lift the screen and safety frame with the suction handle to create a gap between it and the phone assembly.

  • Insert an opening pick into the gap carefully to avoid separating the screen from its safety frame.
  • Position the opening pick correctly to target the phone assembly's adhesive.

Do not remove the opening pick, as this can cause resealing of the adhesive.

Step 7 | Slice the adhesive

Step 7 image

Insert a second opening pick at the bottom edge, sliding it to the bottom left corner.

Leave it in place to prevent the adhesive from resealing.

Step 8

When removing the Google Pixel 6 screen, use only the tip (3-4 mm) of an opening pick to slice the display adhesive.

  • Insert a third opening pick under the bottom left corner of the screen for additional leverage.
  • Slide the opening pick along the left edge of the screen, slicing the adhesive as you go.
  • Leave the pick in the top left corner to prevent resealing.

Step 9

Reheat the adhesive with an iOpener or heat gun for 1-2 minutes if it becomes hard to cut.

  • Insert only 2-3 mm of the opening pick's tip near the front facing camera to avoid damage or smearing.

  • Place a fourth opening pick at the top left corner of the screen.

Slide the opening pick along the top edge to slice the adhesive, and leave it in place to prevent resealing.

Step 10

Insert another opening pick and slide it along the right edge.

  • Slice the remaining adhesive.
  • Do not attempt to remove the display completely at this stage.

The screen is still connected to the phone assembly, do not disconnect it yet.

Step 11 | Open up the phone assembly

Be gentle when handling the display cable to avoid damaging it.

  • Open the right side of the screen, moving it towards the left side of the phone assembly.

Remove the metal bracket situated atop the display cable connector using tweezers.

  • Gently unhinge the bracket.
  • Set aside for reinstallation during reassembly.

Step 13 | Disconnect the display cable

Step 13 image

Disconnect the display flex cable using a spudger by gently prying the connector straight up from its socket.

Step 14 | Remove the screen

Step 14 image

The Pixel's screen is extremely delicate and prone to damage.

  • When handling the screen, grip it firmly by its edges only.
  • Place the screen on a soft, lint-free cloth to prevent direct contact with your work surface.

Remove the screen to avoid accidental damage or creasing.

  • Verify that your replacement screen includes the front camera plastic bracket.
  • If not included, use a spudger to carefully pry the bracket from the old screen and attach it to the new one using double-sided tape.

Step 15 | Reassembly tips

Step 15 image

Reattach the screen: check the camera hole on the new screen for remaining liners and remove them.

  • Make sure to reinstall the display cable bracket.
  • Test your phone: connect the screen, power it on, and verify that it's working properly. Then, power off and disconnect the screen before continuing.

If using custom-cut adhesives or a pre-cut adhesive card, follow specific reassembly instructions for your device.

  • If installing a new screen, refer to the guide on calibrating the fingerprint sensor.
