Google Pixel 6 Fingerprint Reader Replacement

The screen can get damaged easily during removal, and exposure to infrared laser emissions is possible due to the Pixel 6's class 1 lasers.

  • Replace the fingerprint reader in your Google Pixel 6 using this guide.
  • If replacing or switching displays, recalibrate the fingerprint reader for proper functionality.

To maintain water resistance, reapply adhesive carefully and replace components with new adhesive when reassembling.

A fully charged battery can be hazardous during repairs.

  • Charge your battery to at least 25% capacity or lower before beginning this repair.
  • Power down the device completely, then disconnect all charging and data cables.

Step 2 | Anti-Clamp instructions

Using the Anti-Clamp: If not using the Anti-Clamp, skip to step 6.

  • View complete instructions
  • For cracked screens, apply a layer of clear packing tape to aid suction cup adhesion.
  • Pull the blue handle backwards to unlock the Anti-Clamp's arms.
  • Anti-Clamp Arms: Slide over left or right edge of phone.

If surface is too slippery, use tape for better grip.

  • Position suction cups near bottom edge: one on front, one on back.
  • Squeeze cups together to apply suction.

Step 3

Hold the blue handle firmly and pull it forward to lock the arms.

  • Turn the handle clockwise for 360 degrees or until the cups start to stretch.
  • Make sure the suction cups remain aligned with each other; if they begin to slip, loosen them slightly and realign the arms.

Step 4

Careful: Extreme heat can damage display or internal battery.

  • Heat an iOpener and pass it through the arms of the Anti-Clamp.
  • Fold the iOpener to lay on the phone's bottom edge, then wait one minute.
  • Insert an opening pick under the screen frame when a large gap forms.

Don't crank more than half a turn at a time; wait one minute between turns.

Step 5 | Loosen the display adhesive

Step 5 image

Careful not to overheat the device.

  • Apply a heated iOpener to the screen for at least three minutes.
  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate, but be cautious of overheating.

Step 6 | Insert an opening pick

Step 6 image

Screen separation may cause damage or injury if not done carefully.

  • Apply a suction handle to the bottom edge of the screen when warm, or use strong tape as an alternative.
  • Lift the screen and safety frame with the suction handle to create a small gap.
    • Insert an opening pick into the gap between the screen frame and phone assembly, avoiding separation from the safety frame.
    • Slide the opening pick to the bottom right corner of the screen to slice its adhesive.
    • Leave the opening pick in place to prevent resealing.

Step 7 | Slice the adhesive

Step 7 image

Insert a second opening pick at the bottom edge.

  • Slide the pick to the bottom left corner of the screen to slice the adhesive.
  • Leave the opening pick in place to prevent resealing of the adhesive.

Step 8

Insert only 3-4 mm of the opening pick to avoid getting stuck.

  • Underneath the bottom left corner, insert a third opening pick.
  • Carefully slide it along the left edge to slice the adhesive.
  • Leave the opening pick in the top left corner.

Step 9

If the adhesive becomes hard to cut, it has likely cooled down.

  • Reheat the adhesive with your iOpener or heat gun for 1-2 minutes.
  • Near the front facing camera, only insert the tip of the opening pick (2-3 mm) to avoid damage.

Insert a fourth opening pick at the top left corner of the screen.

  • Slide the opening pick along the top edge to slice the adhesive.
  • Leave the opening pick in the top right corner to prevent resealing.

Step 10

Step 10 image

Insert a fifth opening pick along the right edge of the phone.

Do not remove the display completely at this stage, as it remains connected to the phone assembly.

Step 11 | Open up the phone assembly

Step 11 image

Do not strain or stress the display cable.

  • Open the right side of the screen inwards, similar to opening a book.
  • Align it with the left side of the phone assembly.

Handle the Pixel's screen by its edges to avoid damage.

Do not touch the bottom of the screen when placing it on your work area — risk of scratching or denting.

  • Place a soft, lint-free cloth under the screen for protection.
  • Remove the screen from the device.

If your replacement screen lacks the front camera bracket, use a spudger to carefully remove it from the old screen.

Apply double-sided tape to attach the bracket to the new screen.

Step 15 | Reassembly tips

Step 15 image
  • On reassembly, inspect the front-facing camera hole on the newly installed screen and remove any remaining protective liners.
  • Reinstall the display cable bracket.
  • Temporarily connect your screen to test your phone before sealing it up. Power on, verify functionality, then power off and disconnect the screen.

  • If using custom-cut adhesives, refer to the separate guide for instructions.
  • If using a pre-cut adhesive card, refer to the separate guide for instructions.

If installing a new screen, follow the specific guide to calibrate the fingerprint sensor.

Step 16 | Open the ZIF connector

Step 16 image

Calibration is required after replacing the fingerprint reader on Pixel 6, or switching it to a different display.

  • Use one arm of a pair of tweezers to carefully open the ZIF connector at the rear side of the screen.

Step 17 | Disconnect the fingerprint reader

Step 17 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2

Use tweezers to pull the fingerprint reader's cable out of the ZIF connector.

Step 18 | Loosen the fingerprint reader adhesive

Step 18 image

Do not apply excessive heat that could damage the screen.

  • Apply a heated iOpener to the screen with the fingerprint reader for at least 3 minutes to loosen adhesive.
  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate, but monitor temperature to avoid overheating the device.

Step 19 | Separate the fingerprint reader from the screen

Step 19 image

Thumbnail 3

Careful handling required: excessive force may damage the display.

  • Slide an opening pick under the fingerprint reader cable to cut its adhesive.
  • If the adhesive resists, reapply heat for another minute and try again.

Prevent overheating: do not apply excessive heat to the screen.

  • Use your opening pick to separate the fingerprint reader from the display.

Step 20 | Remove the fingerprint reader

Step 20 image

Thumbnail 2

Remove the fingerprint reader using tweezers or your fingers.

  • Compare the new replacement part to the original part for correct alignment.
  • Transfer any remaining components from the old part, if necessary. Remove adhesive backings from the new part before installing.
