Google Pixel 6 Pro Fingerprint Reader Replacement

The replacement of the fingerprint reader in the Google Pixel 6 Pro is relatively straightforward, but be cautious, as the screen can easily get damaged during removal. Also, note that disassembly may expose you to invisible infrared laser emissions.

  • Learn more about our repair guides.
  • You will need replacement adhesive to reattach components when reassembling the device.
  • Recalibrate the fingerprint reader after replacement or switching it between displays to maintain its functionality.
  • The Pixel 6 Pro's IP (Ingress Protection) rating may be affected by this repair, potentially compromising water resistance.

Step 1 | Safety precautions

Step 1 image

Thumbnail 2

Allow the battery to discharge to below 25% charge before proceeding.

  • Fully power off the device.
  • Unplug all cables connected to the phone.

Step 2 | Anti-Clamp instructions

Step 2 image

Thumbnail 3

For an alternate method without the Anti-Clamp, skip ahead three steps.

  • To prepare your cracked screen, cover it with clear packing tape for better suction cup adhesion.
  • Unlock the Anti-Clamp's arms by pulling the blue handle backwards.
  • Slide the arms over either edge of your phone, left or right.

Position one suction cup near the bottom front and another on the back.

If your surface is too slippery, apply tape to create a grippier surface for better adhesion.

  • Finally, squeeze the suction cups together to apply pressure and secure the device.

Step 3

Step 3 image

Thumbnail 3

Lock the arms by pulling the blue handle forward.

  • Rotate the handle clockwise for exactly 360 degrees or until the suction cups start to stretch.
  • Maintain proper alignment of the suction cups. If misalignment occurs, loosen the cups slightly and realign the arms.

Step 4

Step 4 image

Apply gentle heat to the Anti-Clamp using an iOpener, hair dryer, or heat gun.

Use caution with extreme heat to avoid damaging the display or internal battery.

  • Fold the iOpener and position it along the bottom edge of the phone.
  • Wait one minute for the adhesive to release a gap, then proceed.

If the Anti-Clamp doesn't create sufficient space, apply more heat and rotate clockwise in small increments (1/2 turn).

  • Apply gentle pressure and wait one minute between rotations.
  • Let the Anti-Clamp and time do the work for you.

Step 5 | Loosen the display adhesive

Step 5 image

Apply a iOpener to the screen and let it sit for at least 3 minutes.

  • You can also use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate if preferred.
  • Be careful not to overheat the device when using these tools.

Step 6 | Insert an opening pick

Step 6 image

Ensure the screen is warm before proceeding to avoid potential damage.

  • Attach a suction handle to the bottom edge of the screen, or use strong tape if cracked.
  • If necessary, superglue the suction handle to secure it.

Carefully lift the screen and safety frame with the suction handle to create a gap.

  • Insert an opening pick into the gap between the screen and phone assembly.
  • Position the opening pick correctly to avoid separating the screen from its safety frame.

Slide the opening pick to the bottom left corner of the screen, then leave it in place to prevent adhesive resealing.

Step 7 | Slice the adhesive

Step 7 image

Insert the second opening pick at the bottom edge, sliding it to the bottom right corner of the screen.

Leave the opening pick in place to prevent the adhesive from resealing.

Step 8

Step 8 image

Make sure to only insert the tip (~3-4 mm) of the opening pick when slicing the display adhesive.

  • Insert a third opening pick underneath the bottom left corner of the screen.
  • Slide the opening pick along the left edge of the screen to slice the adhesive.
  • Leave the opening pick in the top left corner to prevent resealing.

Step 9

Step 9 image

Check if adhesive has cooled down; if so, heat with iOpener or heat gun for 1-2 minutes.

  • When slicing near the front facing camera, only insert tip of opening pick (~2-3 mm) to avoid damage or smearing.
  • Insert fourth opening pick at top left corner of screen.
  • Slide opening pick along top edge of phone to cut adhesive.
  • Leave opening pick in top right corner to prevent resealing.

Step 10

Step 10 image

Insert a fifth opening pick along the right edge of the phone.

Do not attempt to separate the display at this time — the screen remains attached to the phone assembly.

Step 11 | Open up the phone assembly

Step 11 image

Thumbnail 3

Do not strain the display cable.

  • Fold the screen towards the left side of the phone assembly.
  • Carefully align it as you would open a book.

Step 12 | Unfasten the display bracket screw

Step 12 image

For the Pixel 6 Pro, Torx Plus screws are used but standard Torx bits will work.

Apply constant downward force to prevent screw stripping when removing screws.

  • Remove the 2.0 mm-long 3IP Torx Plus screw securing the display cable metal bracket using a Torx T3 screwdriver.
  • Keep track of each removed screw and make sure it returns to its original location.

Step 13 | Remove the display cable bracket

Step 13 image

Remove the metal bracket using a pair of tweezers.

Keep the removed component safe for later reinstallation.

Step 14 | Disconnect the display cable

Step 14 image

Disconnect the display flex cable using a spudger to pry the connector directly upwards from its socket.

Step 15 | Screen information

Step 15 image

The Pixel's screen is highly susceptible to damage from minor scratches or dents.

  • Grip the screen by its edges when handling it to prevent accidental damage.
  • When placing the screen on a work surface, ensure that nothing touches the bottom of the screen. Use a soft, lint-free cloth for added protection.

Step 16 | Remove the screen

Step 16 image

Remove the screen.

  • During reassembly:
    • If a new screen was installed, remove any protective liners from the front-facing camera hole and sensor cutout before closing the phone.
    • Reinstall the display cable bracket.

Before continuing with reassembly, power off your phone and disconnect the screen for safety.

  • Test the phone by temporarily connecting the screen, powering it on, and verifying its functionality.
  • If using custom-cut adhesives or a pre-cut adhesive card, follow the relevant guide for reassembly instructions.

If installing a new screen, calibrate the fingerprint sensor according to the provided calibration guide.

Step 17 | Open the ZIF connector

Step 17 image

Calibration is required after replacing the fingerprint reader or switching displays on Pixel 6 Pro.

  • Use one arm of tweezers to carefully pry open the ZIF connector at the rear side of the screen.

Step 18 | Disconnect the fingerprint reader

Step 18 image

Thumbnail 2

Disconnect the fingerprint reader cable from the ZIF connector using a pair of tweezers.

Step 19 | Loosen the fingerprint reader adhesive

Step 19 image

Apply a heated iOpener to the screen near the fingerprint reader for at least 3 minutes.

  • Wait for the adhesive to loosen before proceeding.

Step 20 | Separate the fingerprint reader from the screen

Step 20 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Avoid applying too much force when slicing the adhesive under the fingerprint reader, as this may cause damage to the display.

  • Slide an opening pick carefully underneath the fingerprint reader to cut its adhesive.
  • If necessary, reapply your iOpener for another minute to loosen stubborn adhesives.
  • Separate the fingerprint reader from the screen using the opening pick, taking care not to overheat the display.

Step 21 | Remove the fingerprint reader

Step 21 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2

Use tweezers or fingers to carefully remove the fingerprint reader.

  • Compare your new replacement part to the original, noting any components that may need transfer or adhesive removal.
  • Remove old fingerprint reader adhesive before installing a new one.
