Google Pixel 5a Rear Camera Replacement

Discharge the battery to below 25% before repair to avoid risk of fire.

  • Use this guide for rear camera removal or replacement on Google Pixel 5a.
  • Note: If your battery is swollen, take extra precautions when proceeding.

Step 1 | Precautionary notes

Step 1 image

Turn off your device before starting the repair.

Prying at the screen seam can damage the screen or other components.

  • Locate the two seams on the edge of the phone:
    • Screen seam: Do not pry here to avoid damaging the screen.
    • Bezel seam: Pry at this seam, located where the plastic bezel meets the frame. Plastic clips hold it in place.

Step 2 | Heat the right edge of the screen

Step 2 image

Use a heated iOpener on the right edge of the display for 1 minute.

  • Reapply as needed, as adhesive strength varies by device.
  • Alternatives: hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate (be cautious not to overheat).

Step 3 | Bezel removal note

Step 3 image

Insert opening picks into gaps between black clips securing the bezel to the midframe.

  • Note optimal points of entry before proceeding.

Step 4 | Create a gap between the bezel and midframe

Step 4 image

A badly cracked display may require extra adhesion methods.

  • Apply clear packing tape to create a surface for the suction cup to adhere to.
  • Alternatively, use strong tape instead of a suction cup.
  • As a last resort, superglue the suction cup directly to the screen.

Position the suction cup as close to the right edge of the screen as possible.

  • Lift the suction cup with a strong steady force.
  • A small gap between the bezel and midframe should form.

Step 5 | Insert an opening pick

Step 5 image

Careful not to damage the midframe — risk of cracking.

  • Insert an opening pick at a point 4-5 cm from the bottom edge of the phone, into the seam between the bezel and midframe.
  • Gently pry along the entire seam to detach the plastic clips.

Step 6

Position the opening pick in the bezel seam, approximately 1.2 inches (3-4 cm) from the top edge of the device.

Step 7

Step 7 image

Insert the opening pick tip into the bezel seam at the top of the phone.

If this step proves difficult, slide the opening pick along the top right corner until there is enough gap for it to proceed.

Step 8

Step 8 image

Thumbnail 2

Slide the opening pick into the bezel seam at the bottom of the phone, starting at the tip.

  • If necessary, reposition the pick to run along the bottom right corner of the phone.
  • Continue sliding until a sufficient gap is created at the bottom for easy insertion.

Step 9

Step 9 image

Position the opening pick in the bezel seam at the left edge, approximately 2 cm above the phone's base.

Step 10

Remove all clips by detaching them completely.

  • Slice through any remaining adhesive using an opening pick.
  • Open the device like a book, starting from the right side.

Step 12

Step 12 image

Use a T3 Torx driver to remove the screw (4.6 mm long) securing the screen connector bracket.

  • Keep track of each removed screw.
  • Reinstall screws in their original positions for proper repair.

Step 13 | Remove the connector bracket

Step 13 image

Use tweezers to remove the screen connector bracket.

Step 14 | Remove the screen

Step 14 image

  • Use a spudger to pry up and disconnect the screen flex cable.
  • To reattach, align connectors like this one, pressing down gently on one side until it clicks into place, then repeat on the other.
  • Avoid pressing the middle or misaligning the connector, as bent pins can cause permanent damage.

Step 15 | Screen information

Step 15 image

The Pixel's screen is extremely fragile and prone to damage from minor scratches or dents.

  • Grip the screen by its edges when handling.
  • Place the screen on a soft, lint-free cloth to prevent contact with work surface.

Step 16

Step 16 image

Remove the screen from the phone.

  • If replacing the screen, inspect the front-facing camera hole for protective liners and remove them if present.
  • Reinstall the screen connector bracket.
  • Apply new screen adhesive according to the guide for your specific type (custom-cut or Tesa tape).

Do not interact with the screen during the boot-up calibration sequence, as improper touch calibration may occur.

Step 17 | Remove the screws

Step 17 image

Remove six midframe screws using a T3 Torx driver:

  • Four 4.6 mm screws
  • 1 x 4.0 mm screw
  • 1 x 2.0 mm screw

Keep track of each screw for proper reinstallation.

Step 18 | Remove the black plastic cover

Step 18 image

Slide the pointed end of the spudger left to separate the plastic cover from the midframe.

  • Continue sliding until the plastic cover is completely removed.
  • Remove the plastic cover from the midframe.

Step 20

Hold the tweezers at an angle and carefully pry off the covering tape, taking care not to dislodge the exposed screws.

  • Use a gentle prying motion with the tweezers on both sides of the tape.

Step 21 | Remove the remaining screws

Step 21 image

Remove the T3 Torx driver and loosen, then remove, three 4.6 mm screws.

  • Be cautious not to strip the screw threads — they are easily damaged.

  • Remove the final 4.0 mm screw securing the midframe.

Step 22

Step 22 image

Never apply excessive force on the battery as it may puncture or bend, causing leaks and risk of fire.

  • Peel back the tape securing the charging port bracket to the speaker assembly using a spudger or tweezers.

Step 23

Careful not to puncture or damage the battery.

  • Use a blunt pair of tweezers or your fingers to peel back the graphite sheet covering the battery.

Step 24 | Detach the midframe

Step 24 image

Thumbnail 2

Insert the pointed end of a spudger under the top right corner of the midframe.

Be careful not to damage the surrounding components.

  • Pull down on the midframe using the spudger until you see a black plastic clip at the top.
  • Continue prying up with the spudger to detach the midframe from the frame.

Step 25 | Remove the midframe

Step 25 image

Locate the two small plastic spacers holding the midframe.

  • Handle with care to avoid misplacing them, as they can be easily lost without the midframe's support.
  • Ensure you place these spacers back into their designated corners before reinstalling the midframe during reassembly.

Step 27 | Disconnect the battery

Step 27 image
