  • Follow this guide to replace a broken or cracked screen on your Google Pixel 5.
  • The Pixel 5's screen is reinforced with a metal frame and has the earpiece speaker glued onto its back side.

Step 1 | Heat the bottom edge of the screen

Step 1 image

Do not expose the display and internal battery to excessive heat.

  • Apply a heated iOpener to the bottom edge of the screen for one minute.
  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate with caution:
    • Keep the device at a safe distance from intense heat sources.

Step 2 | Screen removal information

Do not damage the screen or surrounding components.

  • Identify the bezel seam, where the plastic bezel meets the frame, held by plastic clips.
  • Pry at this seam to loosen the phone's backing.

Step 3 | Anti-Clamp instructions

For an alternate method without the Anti-Clamp, skip down two steps.

Position one suction cup near the bottom edge of the screen, on the front and another on the back. Push down gently to secure the desired area.

Step 4

Push the blue handle away from the hinge to engage opening mode.

  • Turn the handle clockwise until suction cups start to stretch.
  • Ensure suction cups remain aligned; if they slip, loosen and realign arms.
  • Wait one minute for adhesive release before proceeding.

Insert an opening pick under screen and bezel when a large gap forms.

  • If insufficient gap, apply more heat, rotate handle clockwise half turn.
  • Rotate no more than half a turn at a time; wait one minute between turns.

Step 5 | Insert an opening pick

Apply a suction cup near the heated edge.

  • If the screen is badly cracked, tape over it or superglue the suction cup to the broken screen before proceeding.
  • Pull up on the suction cup with strong, steady force to create a gap.
  • If necessary, reapply heat and try again due to device age.
  • Insert an opening pick into the created gap.

Step 6 | Slice the bottom adhesive

  • Slide a pick along the bottom of the screen, moving it back and forth to cut the adhesive.
  • Keep the pick inserted in the bottom right corner to prevent re-adhesion.

Step 7 | Heat the left edge of the screen

Step 7 image

Apply a iOpener to the left edge of the screen and heat for one minute.

Step 8

Insert another opening pick into the bottom left corner of the screen.

  • Slide the pick around the left corner, being cautious not to insert more than 1/4 inch (6 mm) to avoid damaging the flex cable.
  • Continue sliding the pick up towards the front camera to slice the adhesive on the left edge of the screen.

Leave the pick inserted to prevent re-sealing of the adhesive.

Step 9

Insert another opening pick into the top left corner of the screen.

  • Slide the pick around the front camera and across the top edge of the phone.
  • If the adhesive is difficult to slice, apply heat to the area for one minute and try again.

Be careful not to overheat the screen.

  • Slide the pick to the top right corner of the phone and leave it inserted.

Step 10

Insert a precision opening pick into the bottom right corner of the screen.

  • Slide the pick up to the top right corner, slicing the last edge of adhesive.
  • Optional: Re-run the pick around edges if remaining adhesive needs to be cut, particularly in the corners where it's applied thickest.

Step 11 | Open up the screen

Step 11 image

Thumbnail 2

Use the opening pick in the top left corner to lift the left edge of the screen by a few millimeters.

This will keep the clips from snapping back down into the case and potentially damaging the device.

  • Lift up on the right side of the screen, keeping it level with the opening pick.
  • Continue to open the phone like a book, but do not exceed 90 degrees to prevent damage to the screen flex cable.

Step 12 | Disconnect the screen

Step 12 image

Use tweezers to grip the screen connector cover and secure the screen flex cable.

  • Push the clip in towards the connector.
  • This will unlatch the connection.

Step 13

Remove the screen connector cover.

Keep this component for later reinstallation.

Step 14

Do not press on the middle of a re-attachable connector — risk of pin bending and damage.

  • Use the tip of the spudger to pry up and disconnect the screen flex cable.
  • To reconnect, carefully align the connector and press down on one side until it clicks into place, then repeat on the other side.

Step 15 | Screen information

Step 15 image

Handle the Pixel's screen with care, as it can be damaged easily.

  • Grip the screen by its edges to prevent scratches or dents.
  • Place the screen on a soft, lint-free cloth to avoid any contact damage.

Step 16 | Remove the screen

Step 16 image

Remove the screen.

  • Use tweezers to remove remaining adhesive from the case.
  • If using isopropyl alcohol for cleaning, be cautious not to splash onto unintended components, as this can weaken their adhesive bond (

    risk of weakening component adhesives

    ).
  • After screen replacement, inspect the front-facing camera hole and remove any protective liners.
  • If using a custom-cut adhesive, apply according to this guide (link).
  • If reattaching with Tesa tape, follow the corresponding guide (link).

During boot-up, avoid touching the screen during calibration to prevent touch issues (

potential for improper calibration and touch malfunctioning

).
