Google Pixel 5 Loudspeaker Replacement

Do not reuse a damaged battery — replace it immediately to avoid a potential safety hazard.

  • Discharge your battery below 25% before disassembling to prevent thermal damage.
  • Follow this guide to remove and replace the loudspeaker on the Google Pixel 5.

Step 1 | Eject the SIM card tray

  • Insert a SIM eject tool, bit, or straightened paper clip into the SIM card tray hole.
  • The SIM card tray is located on the left edge of the phone near the bottom.

  • Press firmly to eject the SIM card tray.
  • Remove the ejected SIM card tray.

Step 2 | Heat the bottom edge of the screen

Apply a heated iOpener to the bottom edge of the screen for one minute.

  • A hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate can also be used.
  • Be cautious not to overheat the phone; the display and internal battery are prone to heat damage.

Identify the areas not to pry:

  • The screen seam separating the screen from the rest of the phone.
  • Do not attempt to pry at this seam, as it may cause damage.

Target area for prying: The bezel seam where the plastic bezel meets the frame.

  • This area is held in place by plastic clips.
  • Use caution when prying here, as it may be more difficult than other areas.

Step 4 | Anti-Clamp instructions

Alternate method available if not using the Anti-Clamp.

  • Disengage opening mode by pulling the blue handle towards the hinge.
  • Position suction cups near the bottom edge of the screen: one on the front and one on the back.
  • Apply suction to the desired area by pushing down on the cups.

If surface is too slippery, use packing tape for better grip.

Push the blue handle away from the hinge to engage opening mode.

  • Turn the handle clockwise until you see the suction cups start to stretch.
  • Ensure the cups remain aligned. If they begin to slip out of alignment, loosen and realign as needed.

Wait one minute for adhesive release and gap creation.

  • Insert an opening pick under the screen and bezel frame when a sufficient gap is present.
  • If insufficient gap created, apply more heat and rotate handle clockwise half a turn.

Crank no more than a half a turn at a time, wait one minute between turns.

Apply a suction cup as close to the heated edge as possible.

  • If the screen is badly cracked, tape it over first following the guide for doing so.
  • Alternatively, superglue the suction cup directly onto the broken screen if necessary.
  • Pull up on the suction cup with strong steady force to create a gap.

Be prepared for difficulty due to device age; reapply heat and try again if needed.

Insert the opening pick into the gap once it is established.

Step 7 | Slice the bottom adhesive

Slide the opening pick back and forth along the bottom edge of the screen.

  • Continue until you've sliced through all the adhesive.
  • Leave the pick inserted in the bottom right corner to prevent re-sealing.

Step 8 | Heat the left edge of the screen

Apply iOpener to the left edge of the screen and heat for 1 minute.

Insert another opening pick into the bottom left corner of the screen.

  • Slide the opening pick around the left corner, but do not insert more than 1/4 inch (6 mm) to avoid damaging the flex cable.
  • Continue sliding the pick up towards the front camera to slice the adhesive on the left edge of the screen.

Leave the pick inserted to prevent the adhesive from re-sealing.

Insert a second opening pick into the top left corner of the screen.

  • Slide the pick around the front camera and across the top edge of the device.

If adhesive is stubborn, apply heat for one minute before attempting again.

  • Slide the second pick to the top right corner and leave it inserted.

Insert a pick into the bottom right screen corner.

  • Slide the pick up to the top right corner, slicing the last edge of adhesive.
  • If necessary, re-run a pick along edges for complete adhesive separation, as it's thickest at corners.

Step 12 | Open up the screen

Do not open the screen more than 90 degrees to prevent damage.

  • Use the opening pick from the top left corner to lift up the left edge of the screen a few millimeters.
  • Lift up on the right side of the screen and open the phone like a book.

Step 13 | Disconnect the screen

  • Grip the screen connector cover with a pair of tweezers.
  • Push the clip inwards, towards the connector.

Remove the screen connector cover.

Keep this component for reinstallation purposes.

Use the tip of a spudger to gently pry up and disconnect the screen flex cable.

  • To reattach, carefully align the connector and press down on one side until it clicks into place.
  • Repeat on the other side. Do not press in the middle.
  • If misaligned, the pins can bend, causing permanent damage.

The Pixel's screen back is extremely fragile — small scratches or dents can cause damage.

  • Grip the screen by its edges when handling to prevent damage.
  • When placing on a work surface, ensure nothing touches the screen's bottom. Use a soft, lint-free cloth for added protection.

Step 17 | Remove the screen

Be cautious of splash damage when cleaning adhesive with isopropyl alcohol.

  • Remove the screen.
  • Use tweezers to remove remaining case adhesive.
  • (Optional) Clean display adhesive with isopropyl alcohol, taking care not to splash nearby components.
  • If replacing screen, inspect camera hole and remove protective liners.
  • Remove tape securing replacement display cable (if applicable).

Avoid touching the screen during boot-up calibration sequence to ensure proper touch function.

Step 18 | Remove the graphite tape

Remove the graphite tape using tweezers

  • Lift the tape until you can grip it with your fingers.
  • Be careful not to puncture or bend the battery — risk of thermal event or chemical leakage.

Peel off the graphite tape once loose.

Peel off the graphite pad from the charging plate cover using tweezers.

Dispose of the graphite pad in a safe manner to avoid contamination.

  • If the graphite pad is in good condition, set it aside for reapplication during reassembly.

Step 20 | Remove the charging plate cover

Remove the T3 Torx driver to unscrew the two 4.6 mm screws holding the charging plate cover.

Keep track of each screw for correct reassembly.

Remove the charging plate cover using tweezers.

Keep this component for later use as you will need to reinstall it.

Remove the midscrew using a T3 Torx driver.

  • Eight screws, 4.6 mm long, are found on the midscrew. Securing these hold the midscrew in place.

Step 23 | Remove the midframe

Locate and carefully lift the right side of the midframe using tweezers.

  • Remove the midframe.
  • The top spacer may dislodge; securely store it for reassembly.

Step 24 | Disconnect the battery

Use the pointed end of a spudger to gently pry the battery connector upwards and disconnect it from the motherboard.

Step 25 | Remove the shouldered screw

Remove the shouldered screw (4.1 mm) using a T3 Torx driver.

Step 26 | Disconnect the rear cameras

  • Disconnect the rear camera press connectors from the motherboard using a spudger.
  • Hold the rear camera assembly firmly with your finger to prevent bending the motherboard.

Step 27 | Remove the rear cameras

Lift the rear camera assembly with tweezers.

  • If your replacement camera module has a plastic spacer, remove it before installation.
  • Clean the lens surface to ensure it is smudge- and dust-free for proper installation.

Step 28 | Remove adhesive pull tabs

Use blunt nose tweezers to grip the black adhesive pull tab at the top right edge of the battery.

  • Lift the pull tab with the tweezers until you can grasp it with your fingers.
  • Pull on the pull tab with a slow, steady force at a shallow angle to prevent breakage.

Twisted or wrinkled adhesive strips will stick together and break instead of pulling out cleanly.

  • If the adhesive becomes hard to pull, roll it around a spudger and continue pulling.
  • Use tweezers to retrieve any remaining length of adhesive if the pull tab breaks prematurely.
  • If unable to retrieve it, proceed to the next step.

Locate the pull tab at the bottom left edge of the battery.

  • Use a similar process as before to remove the pull tab.
  • If it breaks, try retrieving it with tweezers.
  • If retrieval is not possible, proceed to the next step.

Step 30 | Loosen the adhesive

Do not attempt to retrieve broken adhesive strips — risk of damaging surrounding components.

  • Apply 2-3 drops of high-concentration isopropyl alcohol (over 90%) into the opening of the affected tab.

Allow the adhesive to soften by tilting the phone and letting the alcohol flow towards it.

Wait at least one minute for the adhesive to fully soften before proceeding.

Step 32 | Remove the battery

Avoid bending the battery.

Never scrape the flex cables under the battery with your opening pick — risk of damage.

  • Insert an opening pick into the gap along the left side of the battery.
  • Use the opening pick to slice adhesive at the top and bottom of the battery.
  • Avoid the earpiece contact pins near the top left corner of the battery.

If the battery does not lift, add a few more drops of isopropyl alcohol or use a plastic card to assist with removal.

Replace a deformed or damaged battery to avoid electrical hazards.

  • Dispose of the old battery.
  • Install a brand-new battery.

Step 34 | Disconnect the press connectors

Use the pointed end of a spudger to lift the press connectors straight up off the motherboard.

Step 35 | Remove the motherboard screws

Use a T3 Torx driver to remove the two 2.9 mm screws.

Step 36 | Bend the flex cable out of the way

Use a spudger to carefully fold the flex cable covering the rear case press connector.

  • Gently push the spudger under the flex cable and fold it aside.

Step 37 | Disconnect the press connector

Disconnect the rear case press connector using a spudger.

Step 38 | Remove the motherboard

Insert the spudger's pointed end into the screw holes near the front-facing camera.

  • Push the motherboard down towards the phone's bottom.
  • Lift up to free the motherboard's top from the rear case.

Hold the motherboard firmly with your fingers and gently pull it upwards towards the rear of the case.

Avoid bending or twisting the motherboard.

  • If the motherboard is stuck, use a spudger to carefully loosen it around the edges.
  • Once free, carefully lift and remove the motherboard.

Remove the motherboard to allow the top spacer to fall out.

  • Reposition the midframe without screwing it down.

Grip the spacer carefully, avoiding the delicate end tabs.

  • Use tweezers to grasp the body of the spacer and compress the interior foam.
  • Squeeze the spacer into position before screwing the midframe down.

Step 41 | Loosen the adhesive

Apply a few drops of isopropyl alcohol to loosen the adhesive holding the loudspeaker.

  • If using isopropyl alcohol, proceed with caution as it may damage surrounding components.
  • If not using isopropyl alcohol, a heavy-duty spudger may be required to remove the loudspeaker.

Step 42 | Pry out the loudspeaker

  • Insert the spudger into the crevice between the loudspeaker and the rear case.
  • Pry the loudspeaker away from the edge of the case.
  • This may be difficult depending upon the age and strength of the adhesive.

Insert the opening tool between the loudspeaker and the rear case.

Pry the loudspeaker off the rear case using a gentle rocking motion.
