Google Pixel 5 Battery Replacement

For your safety, discharge the battery below 25% before disassembling your phone to avoid thermal events.

  • Take precautions if your battery is swollen.
  • Remove any obstructions from the rear panel (e.g. rear cameras) if needed.
  • Follow this guide for steps on removing and replacing the Google Pixel 5 battery.

Step 1 | Heat the bottom edge of the screen

Step 1 image

To avoid heat damage, use caution when applying heat.

  • Apply heat for one minute to the bottom edge of the screen using an iOpener or a suitable alternative (hair dryer, heat gun, hot plate).
  • Avoid overheating the phone, as the display and internal battery are susceptible to damage.

When using the Anti-Clamp, pull the blue handle towards the hinge to disengage opening mode.

  • Position the suction cups near the bottom edge of the screen, one on the front and one on the back.
  • Push down on the cups to apply suction to the desired area.

If the surface is too slippery, use packing tape for a better grip.

Step 4

Engage opening mode by pushing the blue handle away from the hinge.

  • Turn the handle clockwise until the suction cups start to stretch.
  • Keep the cups aligned; if they slip, loosen them slightly and realign the arms.
  • Wait one minute for the adhesive release.

Do not crank more than a half a turn at a time, as excessive force can cause damage. Wait one minute between turns.

  • Insert an opening pick under the screen and bezel frame when a gap is created.
  • If insufficient gap, apply more heat and rotate handle clockwise by half a turn.

Step 5 | Insert an opening pick

Step 5 image

Apply a suction cup to the screen, as close to the heated edge as possible.

  • If your screen is badly cracked, follow the guide to tape over the cracked screen.
  • Otherwise, superglue the suction cup to the broken screen if necessary.

Use strong, steady force to pull up on the suction cup and create a gap.

This may be difficult depending on your device's age; if you have trouble, reapply heat and try again.

  • Insert the opening pick into the created gap.

Step 6 | Slice the bottom adhesive

Thumbnail 2

Use the opening pick at the top left corner to lift the left edge of the screen by a few millimeters.

This will prevent clips from snapping back into the case.

  • Lift up on the right side of the screen and open the phone like a book.
  • Do not exceed an opening angle of 90 degrees to avoid damaging the screen flex cable.

Step 12 | Disconnect the screen

Step 12 image

Avoid damaging the screen flex cable by misaligning the connector.

  • Pry up and disconnect the screen flex cable using a spudger's tip.
  • To reattach, align the connector pins, then press down on one side until it clicks in place.
  • Repeat for the other side; do not press the middle section to avoid pin damage.

Step 15 | Screen information

Step 15 image

Fragile screen: Avoid scratches and dents.

  • Grip the screen by its edges to prevent damage.
  • Place the screen on a soft, lint-free cloth to avoid contact with other objects.

Step 16 | Remove the screen

Step 16 image

Do not let isopropyl alcohol splash onto unintended components when cleaning adhesive.

  • Remove the screen.
  • Use tweezers to remove remaining adhesive from the case.
  • Check the screen's camera hole and remove any protective liners.
  • Remove tape holding down the display cable, if applicable.
  • Apply custom-cut adhesive following its guide.

Do not touch the screen during boot-up calibration to avoid touch issues.

  • If using Tesa tape, follow reattachment guide.
  • Allow the new screen's calibration sequence to complete normally.

Use blunt nose tweezers to grasp the black adhesive pull tab at the top right edge of the battery.

  • Lift the pull tab with the tweezers until you can grip it directly with your fingers.
  • Pull on the pull tab with a slow, steady force at a shallow angle to prevent it from breaking.
  • Try to keep the adhesive strips flat and unwrinkled during this process to ensure smooth removal.

Twisted or wrinkled strips may stick together and break instead of coming out cleanly.

If the adhesive is hard to remove, you can roll it around a spudger and continue pulling.

If the pull tab breaks prematurely, use tweezers to retrieve any remaining length of adhesive and proceed carefully.

If retrieval is not possible, move on to the next step.
