Step 2 | Precautionary notes

Step 2 image

Locate the screen seam on the edge of the phone, where the screen separates from the rest of the device.

Do not pry at the frame seam, which is held in place by screws.

  • Identify the screen flex cable and avoid inserting the opening pick deeper than instructed to prevent damage.
  • Note the orange ribbon cable under the lower-right corner of the screen and insert the opening pick only as necessary to separate the screen adhesive.
  • Avoid prying beyond the adhesive perimeter, which is a narrow zone surrounding the OLED panel; doing so without angling the pick will cause damage.

Step 3 | Heat the right edge of the screen

Step 3 image

Apply a iOpener to the right edge of the display for one minute.

Use a heat source with caution: overheating can cause damage to the display or internal battery.

  • A hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate may also be used for adhesive softening.

Step 4 | Insert an opening pick

Step 4 image

If your display is badly cracked, you may need to use alternative methods to create a suction surface.

  • Apply clear packing tape over the crack to aid suction cup adhesion or
  • use strong tape as a direct adhesive substitute for the suction cup.
  • As a last resort, superglue the suction cup to the broken screen.

Position the suction cup as close to the right edge of the screen as possible.

  • Lift the suction cup with a firm, steady force.
  • Insert an opening pick into the screen seam, no deeper than 1 mm from the tip.

Step 5 | Guide the opening pick under the OLED panel

Step 5 image

Thumbnail 3

Insert the pick 1mm into the gap, then pivot it upwards to a steep angle.

  • Pivot the pick further until it's at a 45-degree angle.
  • Carefully push the pick into the gap about 6mm (0.25 inches).

Stop if you feel the point of the pick hitting a ridge; the pick may be pressing against the OLED panel edge.

Step 6 | Cut the adhesive

Step 6 image

Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Slide a pick along the right edge of the screen to cut the adhesive.

Do not insert more than 1/4 inch (6 mm) or risk damaging the flex cable.

Leave the pick in the top right corner to prevent re-sealing.

Step 7

Thumbnail 3

Apply gentle heat if screen feels hard to slice.

  • Insert another opening pick into right edge at an angle, where a gap has formed.
  • Slide opening pick around bottom of phone to cut adhesive.

Be careful not to snag delicate cable under bottom-right corner of screen.

Insert only 2 mm deep and at an angle downward to prevent damage.

Leave pick inserted along bottom edge to prevent resealing.

Step 8

Step 8 image

Insert an opening pick into the bottom edge at a gap, angled to prevent OLED panel damage.

  • Use the pick to cut along the left edge of the phone.
  • If slicing is hard, heat the left edge for one minute and try again.

Leave the pick inserted along the left edge to prevent adhesive re-sealing.

Step 9

Do not remove or damage the mesh covering the earpiece speaker on the top edge of the screen.

  • Insert another opening pick into the left edge at an angle, where a gap has formed.
  • Slide the pick around the top edge to cut the adhesive.
  • If the screen is hard to slice, heat the top edge for one minute and try again.

Step 10

Step 10 image

Carefully lift the right edge of the screen, opening the phone like a book.

  • iSclack or suction cup is not needed at this stage.
  • Use an opening pick to carefully cut through any remaining adhesive.

Step 11 | Flip the screen over

Step 11 image

Careful: do not apply undue stress to the ribbon cable.

  • Lift the screen from the top edge.
  • Swing the screen over the bottom edge until it rests glass-side down.

Step 12 | Disconnect the display

Step 12 image

Peel up the black tape covering the screen connector bracket using a pair of tweezers.

If the tape is damaged, discard it and replace with electrical tape during reassembly.

Step 13

Step 13 image
  • Remove the two 2.1 mm screws using a T3 Torx driver.
  • Label and keep track of these screws to ensure correct reassembly.

Step 14

Step 14 image
  • Remove the screen connector bracket using tweezers.
  • This part will be needed for reassembly.

Step 15

Step 15 image

Use the tip of a spudger to pry up and disconnect the screen flex cable.

  • To re-attach press connectors like this one, carefully align and press down on one side until it clicks into place.
  • Repeat on the other side. Do not press down on the middle.
  • If the connector is misaligned, the pins can bend, causing permanent damage.

Risk of pin bending and permanent damage if misaligned

Step 16 | Remove the screen

Step 16 image

Remove the screen.

  • Check if your replacement screen has speaker mesh and top edge adhesive pre-installed.
  • If it doesn't, remove the larger clear liner from the top edge adhesive and apply it to the screen (not the frame), ensuring the cutout lines up with the speaker mesh.
  • Follow the guide for custom-cut adhesive application.
  • During boot-up after reassembly, avoid touching the screen during calibration, as this may cause touch issues.

Step 17 | Remove the midframe screws

Step 17 image

Remove the back cover by using a T3 Torx driver to take out the eight 4.3 mm screws.

Step 18 | Spring contact information

Step 18 image

Examine the photo showing the midframe components behind the back cover.

  • Identify the spring contacts near the edge of the midframe.
  • When using the opening pick, insert it no more than 2 mm to avoid damaging the spring contacts.

Step 19 | Separate the back cover from the midframe

Step 19 image

Insert the opening pick no more than 2 mm into the seam.

  • Insert an opening pick between the midframe and back cover, angled downwards at a steep angle into the seam.
  • Slide the opening pick along the bottom edge to release the plastic clips securing the back cover to the midframe.

Step 20

Step 20 image
