Google Pixel 4 Wireless Charging Coil Replacement

Caution: The wireless charging coil is covered by a graphite adhesive layer, which must be destroyed and replaced during removal.

  • Use this guide to remove or replace the wireless charging coil on your Google Pixel 4.
  • Caution: The wireless charging coil is a large sticker adhered to the back panel.
  • Caution: Disassembling the front laser assembly may expose you to hazardous infrared laser emissions. Consult Google's safety warnings.

Insert a SIM eject tool, ejector bit, or a straightened paper clip into the small hole on the SIM card tray located on the left edge of the phone.

Press firmly to prevent damage — risk of breaking the SIM card tray.

  • Remove the SIM card tray from the phone.

Step 2 | Heat the back panel glass

Step 2 image

Use a heat source with caution to avoid overheating the phone.

  • Prepare an iOpener or use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate.
  • Apply the heat source to the bottom edge of the back panel for one minute.

Do not apply excessive heat, as it may damage the display and internal battery.

Step 3 | Apply a suction cup

Step 3 image

Apply a suction cup to the heated edge of the back panel by pressing down firmly.

  • To create suction, press as close to the edge as possible.
  • If the back glass is badly cracked, cover it with clear packing tape for better adhesion.
  • Alternatively, use strong tape in place of the suction cup.
  • As a last resort, superglue the suction cup to the broken panel, but be aware that this may damage surrounding components.

Step 4 | Insert an opening pick

Step 4 image

Apply suction cup firmly with steady force.

  • Create gap between back panel and frame.
  • If difficult, apply more heat to edge and retry.
  • Insert opening pick point into the gap.

Step 5 | Begin to slice the adhesive

Insert an opening pick at the bottom edge of the device.

  • Slide it across towards the left corner to cut the adhesive.
  • With the pick still in place, slide it to the bottom right corner to cut the entire lower edge.

Leave the pick inserted at the bottom right corner to prevent re-adhesion.

Step 6 | Slice the lefthand-side adhesive

Step 6 image

Apply a iOpener to the left edge of the phone for 1 minute.

Step 7

Slide the opening pick around the bottom left corner and across the left side of the phone.

The adhesive can be very gummy — use a sawing motion with the pick to help slice it.

  • Continue moving the pick up the left side until you reach the top left corner, near the camera.
  • Leave the pick inserted at this point to maintain access to the adhesive.

Step 9 | Slice righthand-side adhesive

Step 9 image

Prepare an iOpener.

  • Apply the opener to the right edge of the phone.
  • Hold for exactly one minute before proceeding.

Carefully lift the right edge of the back cover.

  • Open the cover like a book.
  • Do not pull the panel all the way off yet, as it is still connected to the phone.

Step 13

Step 13 image

Continue swinging open the back panel until it rests on the left edge of the phone, taking care not to stress the attached ribbon cable.

  • Power on your phone and test all functions during reassembly.
  • Make sure to power down your phone completely before continuing work.

Step 14 | Disconnect the battery

Step 14 image

Remove the T3 Torx screws securing the battery connector shield using a T3 Torx driver.

  • Four 4.0 mm T3 Torx screws.
  • One 2.1 mm T3 Torx screw.

Keep track of each screw and ensure it returns to its original location for reassembly.

Be extremely cautious when using a spudger near the battery to avoid accidental puncture.

  • Use the pointed end of a spudger to pry the battery connector straight up from the motherboard.

When reconnecting press connectors, carefully align and press down on one side until it clicks, then repeat on the other. Never press in the middle, as misalignment can cause permanent damage to the pins.

Use the flat end of a spudger to carefully bend the battery cable out of the way.

Do not allow the battery cable to touch any other components during this repair process.

Step 22 | Peel off the graphite adhesive layer

Step 22 image

Be careful not to touch the wireless charging coil during disassembly.

  • Remove the graphite adhesive layer by gently pulling it up at one of the bottom corners using tweezers.
  • Once loose, use your fingers to remove the remaining adhesive from the wireless charging coil.

Step 23

Step 23 image

Use tweezers to gently lift a corner of the wireless charging coil pad's adhesive backing.

  • Pull the adhesive away enough to grasp it with your fingers.
  • Peel off and remove the old wireless charging coil completely.

Make sure the new wireless charging coil's contacts align with the outline left by the old adhesive.

  • If the contacts don't match the spring contacts on the motherboard, the wireless charging coil will malfunction.
