Google Pixel 4 Rear Camera Module Replacement

Google warns that disassembling the front laser assembly can expose you to hazardous infrared laser emissions.

  • Use this guide to remove or replace the rear-facing cameras on your Google Pixel 4.

Step 1 | Remove the SIM card tray

  • Insert a SIM eject tool, broadhead screwdriver bit, or straightened paper clip into the small hole on the SIM card tray.
  • Press firmly to eject the tray.
  • Remove the ejected SIM card tray.

Step 2 | Heat the back panel glass

Apply a iOpener to the bottom edge of the back panel for one minute.

  • A hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate can also be used, but be careful not to overheat the phone.
  • The display and internal battery are susceptible to heat damage.

Step 3 | Apply a suction cup

Apply a suction cup to the heated edge of the back panel by pressing down.

  • For badly cracked glass, cover with clear packing tape for better adhesion.
  • Alternatively, use very strong tape instead of the suction cup.
  • As a last resort, superglue the suction cup to the broken panel.

Step 4 | Insert an opening pick

Apply suction cup with strong, steady force.

  • Create a gap between back panel and frame.
  • If difficult, apply more heat to edge.
  • Insert opening pick point into gap.

Step 5 | Begin to slice the adhesive

Insert an opening pick at the bottom of the device and slide it towards the left corner to slice the adhesive.

  • Continue sliding the pick along the bottom edge, from the left corner to the right corner, to complete the adhesive removal.
  • Leave the pick inserted in the right corner to prevent re-sealing of the adhesive.

Step 6 | Slice the lefthand-side adhesive

Apply iOpener to the left edge of the phone for 1 minute.

  • Opening Pick: Place at the top, under the back panel, covering the charge port.
  • Guide the pick downwards and towards the left edge of the phone's bottom-left corner.

Slide an opening pick along the bottom left corner and up the left side of the phone to cut the adhesive.

  • If the adhesive is gummy, push the pick in and out in a sawing motion.
  • Stop when the top left corner is reached, near the camera, and leave the pick inserted.

Step 9 | Slice righthand-side adhesive

Heat the iOpener until flexible.

  • Apply the iOpener to the right edge of the phone, ensuring good contact.
  • Allow the iOpener to heat the area for one minute before proceeding.

Insert a pick at the lower right side.

  • Slice up to the top right corner, cutting adhesives on the right side.
  • Leave the pick in place.

Step 11 | Slice the top-side adhesive

Slide the third opening pick from the top right corner to the top side of the phone, cutting through the last piece of adhesive.

Step 12 | Lift up the back panel

Do not attempt to remove the back cover completely at this time.

  • Lift the right edge of the back cover carefully, opening it like a book.
  • Continue to hold the panel in its partially opened state, as further removal steps are required.

Rest the back panel on the left edge of the phone, taking care not to stress the attached ribbon cable.

  • Power on your phone and test all functions at this point during reassembly.
  • Make sure to power your phone down completely before proceeding.

Step 14 | Disconnect the battery

Remove the T3 Torx screws securing the battery connector shield.

  • Four 4.0 mm screws.
  • One 2.1 mm screw.

Keep track of each screw and ensure it goes back to its original location.

Remove the battery connector shield with a pair of tweezers.

Be extremely cautious when using a spudger near the battery to avoid puncture.

  • Using the pointed end of a spudger, pry the battery connector straight up from the motherboard.
  • To re-attach, carefully align and press one side down until it clicks into place, then repeat on the other. Avoid pressing the middle.
  • Misaligned connectors can bend pins, causing permanent damage.

Use the flat end of a spudger to gently fold the battery cable out of the way.

Step 18 | Disconnect the back panel connector

Remove the T3 Torx using it to unscrew the two 4mm screws.

  • The screws secure the back panel connector cover.

Use tweezers to pry off the back panel connector cover.

Use the pointed end of a spudger to gently pry up the back panel connector and release it.

Step 21 | Remove the back panel

Remove the back panel.

  • During reassembly, apply custom-cut adhesives following another guide.
  • If using a pre-cut adhesive card, refer to its installation guide.

Step 22 | Front Camera and Sensor Assembly

Remove the Camera Connector Cover by using a T3 Torx driver to unscrew the four 4mm screws.

Use tweezers to lift the camera cover.

  • Tilt the camera cover upwards.
  • Slide it out of the retaining slot on the upper right corner.

Step 24 | Disconnect the camera and sensor connectors

Use the pointed tip of a spudger to carefully lift the camera and sensor connectors directly upwards off the motherboard.

Disconnect the laser module connector.

Step 26 | Remove the front camera and sensor assembly

Remove the two 2.4 mm screws using a T3 Torx driver.

Use tweezers to carefully lift out the front camera and sensor assembly.

Step 28 | Motherboard

Remove the T3 Torx screw with a 4.2mm head.

Remove the T3 Torx shouldered screw with a 4.4mm head.

Remove the vibration motor shield with a pair of tweezers.

Step 30 | Disconnect the motherboard press connectors

  • Insert the pointed tip of a spudger into the gap between each connector and the motherboard.
  • Gently pry the rear-facing camera connectors away from their sockets.

  • Disconnect the side buttons connector from the motherboard.
  • Remove the earpiece speaker connector from the motherboard.

  • Remove the left grip sensor connector from the motherboard.
  • Remove the charge port connector from the motherboard.

  • Remove the display connector from the motherboard.
  • Unplug the right grip sensor connector from the motherboard.

Step 34 | Disconnect the antennas

Use tweezers to grip the metal clip and pull the connector straight up.

Be careful not to damage the motherboard or nearby components.

  • Pry up gently with a spudger on the bottom antenna connector.

Disconnect the bottom microphone connector from the motherboard.

Use a plastic spudger to gently pry loose the two battery adhesive pull tabs, but do not remove them yet.

Step 37 | Remove the motherboard

Use a spudger to carefully lift the top edge of the motherboard upwards and out of its housing.

Slowly lift out the motherboard, avoiding ribbon cable connectors.

  • The rear-facing camera module connectors loop around the motherboard; it may detach during removal.
  • Completely remove the motherboard.
  • The small rubber bottom microphone cover may fall off; do not lose it.

When reinstalling, ensure no ribbon cable connectors are trapped underneath.

Step 39 | Remove the rear cameras

Use tweezers to carefully extract the rear-facing camera module.
