Google Pixel 4 Motherboard Replacement

Google cautions against disassembling the front laser assembly due to potential hazardous infrared emission.

Step 1 | Remove the SIM card tray

  • Insert a SIM eject tool, bit, or a straightened paper clip into the small hole.
  • Press firmly to eject the tray.
  • Remove the SIM card tray.

Step 2 | Heat the back panel glass

Avoid overheating the phone, as the display and internal battery can be damaged.

  • Apply a iOpener to the bottom edge of the back panel for one minute.
  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate, but exercise caution to prevent overheating.

Step 3 | Apply a suction cup

Apply a suction cup to the heated edge of the back panel by pressing down on it.

  • To create suction, position the cup as close to the edge as possible.
  • For badly cracked back glass, cover with clear packing tape for better adhesion.
  • Alternatively, use very strong tape instead of a suction cup or apply superglue to secure it.

Step 4 | Insert an opening pick

Apply firm pressure with a suction cup to separate the back panel from the frame.

Additional force or heat may be required, depending on phone age.

  • Insert an opening pick into the created gap.

Step 5 | Begin to slice the adhesive

Slide an opening pick across the bottom towards the left corner to slice the adhesive.

  • With the pick still inserted, slide it from the bottom left corner over to the bottom right corner to completely slice the bottom side adhesive.
  • Leave the pick inserted in the bottom right corner to prevent re-sealing of the adhesive.

Step 6 | Slice the lefthand-side adhesive

Apply heat carefully to avoid damage — follow correct temperature guidelines.

  • Heat a iOpener in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.
  • Position the heated iOpener on the left edge of the phone for exactly one minute.

Insert the second opening pick underneath the back panel, positioning it directly above the charge port.

  • Slide the opening pick to the bottom left corner of the phone.

Insert an opening pick into the bottom left corner of the phone.

  • Slide the pick across the left side of the phone towards the top left corner, where the camera is located.
  • For tough adhesive, use a sawing motion with the pick by pushing it in and out slowly.

Step 9 | Slice righthand-side adhesive

Prepare an iOpener and apply it to the right edge of the phone for 1 minute.

  • Insert a third opening pick on the lower part of the righthand side.
  • Slide the opening pick up towards the top of the phone, slicing the right side's adhesive.
  • Stop when you reach the top right corner and leave the pick inserted to avoid damage.

Step 11 | Slice the top-side adhesive

Slide the third opening pick from the top right corner, then move it across the top of the phone to slice the remaining adhesive.

Step 12 | Lift up the back panel

Carefully lift the right edge of the back cover, opening it like a book.

Do not attempt to remove the panel completely at this stage — it remains connected to the phone.

Continue opening the back panel until it rests on the left edge of the phone, without stressing the attached ribbon cable.

Power on and test all functions before re-sealing the back panel — then power down completely to continue working.

Step 14 | Disconnect the battery

Remove the T3 Torx screws securing the battery connector shield:

  • (4) 4.0 mm screws
  • (1) 2.1 mm screw

Label and keep track of each screw for reassembly.

Remove the battery connector shield using a pair of tweezers.

Avoid damaging the battery when using a spudger near it.

  • Use the pointed end of a spudger to pry the battery connector straight up from the motherboard.
  • To reattach, align and press down on one side of the press connector, then repeat on the other. Avoid pressing the middle.

Fold the battery cable back using the flat end of a spudger.

Step 18 | Disconnect the back panel connector

Remove the T3 Torx driver and use it to loosen the two 4 mm screws.

  • The screws secure the back panel connector cover.
  • Once loose, carefully remove the screws for access.

Remove the back panel connector cover using a pair of tweezers.

Use the pointed end of a spudger to pry up and release the back panel connector.

Step 22 | Front Camera and Sensor Assembly

Remove the four 4 mm screws using a T3 Torx driver.

Use tweezers to tilt the camera cover upwards.

  • Slide the cover out of its retaining slot located at the top-right corner of the phone.

Step 24 | Disconnect the camera and sensor connectors

Use the pointed end of a spudger to gently lift the camera and sensor connectors upwards, away from the motherboard.

Disconnect the laser module connector.

Remove the two 2.4 mm screws using a T3 Torx driver.

  • The screws secure the front camera and sensor assembly.

Remove the front camera and sensor assembly using a pair of tweezers.

Step 28 | Motherboard

Remove the T3 Torx screws securing the vibration motor shield.

  • One 4.2 mm T3 Torx screw
  • One 4.4 mm shouldered T3 Torx screw

Remove the vibration motor shield with a pair of tweezers.

Step 30 | Disconnect the motherboard press connectors

Disconnect the rear-facing camera connectors using the pointed end of a spudger.

  • Remove the side buttons connector from the motherboard.
  • Separate the earpiece speaker connector from the motherboard.

Remove the left grip sensor connector from its socket on the motherboard.

  • Locate the charge port connector and carefully remove it from the motherboard.

  • Remove the display connector from the motherboard.
  • Disconnect the right grip sensor connector from the motherboard.

Step 34 | Disconnect the antennas

  • Use tweezers to grasp the metal clip and lift the connector straight up off the motherboard.
  • To release the bottom antenna connector, use a spudger to pry it gently from the motherboard.

Disconnect the bottom microphone connector from the motherboard.

Use your fingers or a soft prying tool to gently lift the two battery adhesive pull tabs, but do not attempt to remove them at this time.

Step 37 | Remove the motherboard

Use a spudger to carefully lift the top edge of the motherboard out of its mounting points.

Slowly lift out the motherboard, being careful not to snag any ribbon cable connectors.

The rear-facing camera module may detach with the motherboard during removal; ensure proper reinstallation.

  • Completely remove the motherboard.
  • Be cautious, as the small rubber microphone cover may fall off while removing the motherboard.

When reinstalling the motherboard, inspect for trapped ribbon cable connectors to avoid damage.
