Google Pixel 4 Front Camera and Sensor Assembly Replacement

  • The purpose of this guide is to assist in removing or replacing the front camera and sensors on a Google Pixel 4.
  • Consult Google's safety warnings for further details regarding the hazards associated with the front laser assembly.

Step 1 | Remove the SIM card tray

Insert the SIM eject tool, a bent paperclip, or other suitable tool into the small hole on the SIM card tray.

  • Press firmly until the tray is ejected.
  • Remove the ejected SIM card tray.

Step 2 | Heat the back panel glass

Risk of heat damage to the display and internal battery: exercise caution when using a heat source.

  • Prepare an iOpener and apply it to the bottom edge of the back panel for one minute.
  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate – but monitor temperature closely to avoid overheating the phone.

Step 3 | Apply a suction cup

Position the suction cup near the heated edge of the back panel and press down firmly.

  • To enhance adhesion, apply clear packing tape over cracked glass before attaching the suction cup.
  • Alternatively, use very strong tape instead of the suction cup for better grip.
  • As a last resort, superglue the suction cup directly to the broken panel.

Step 4 | Insert an opening pick

Applying excessive force may damage the device.

  • Pull up on the suction cup with a strong, steady force to create a gap between the back panel and frame.
  • If necessary, apply heat to the edge for easier separation.
  • Insert the point of an opening pick into the created gap.

Step 5 | Begin to slice the adhesive

  • Slide a pick across the bottom towards the left corner to cut the adhesive.
  • Move the pick from the left corner over to the right, slicing the bottom side's adhesive completely.
  • Leave the pick in place to prevent re-adhesion.

Step 6 | Slice the lefthand-side adhesive

Apply iOpener to the left edge of the phone for 1 minute.

  • Insert an opening pick under the back panel near the charge port.
  • Guide the pick towards the bottom left corner of the device.

Slide a pick around the bottom left corner and across the phone's left side to slice the adhesive.

Be cautious, as the adhesive can be very gummy.

  • Use a sawing motion with the pick by pushing it in and out to help slice the adhesive.
  • Stop when you reach the top left corner near the camera and leave the pick inserted.

Step 9 | Slice righthand-side adhesive

Apply iOpener to the right edge of the phone for 1 min.

Insert a third pick on the lower right side.

  • Slide the pick up towards the top, cutting the right side's adhesive.
  • Stop at the top right corner and leave the pick in place.

Step 11 | Slice the top-side adhesive

  • Position the third opening pick at the top right corner.
  • Sweep it across the top edge of the phone, cutting the remaining adhesive.

Step 12 | Lift up the back panel

Do not attempt to remove the back cover completely.

  • Lift the right edge of the back cover like opening a book.
  • The panel will remain attached, do not try to pull it off yet.

Continue opening the back panel until it rests on the left edge of the phone, without stressing the attached ribbon cable.

Power on the phone and test functions here, but power down completely before continuing.

Step 14 | Disconnect the battery

Remove the T3 Torx screws securing the battery connector shield using a T3 Torx driver.

  • Four 4.0 mm T3 Torx screws.
  • One 2.1 mm T3 Torx screw.

Keep track of each screw and ensure it returns to its original location to avoid damaging the device.

Remove the battery connector shield using a pair of tweezers.

Careful not to puncture the battery when using a spudger near it.

  • Pry the battery connector straight up from the motherboard using the pointed end of a spudger.
  • To re-attach, carefully align and press down on one side until it clicks, then repeat on the other. Do not press in the middle.
  • Misaligned connector can cause permanent damage by bending pins.

Use the flat end of a spudger to fold the battery cable over and secure it.

  • Gently manipulate the battery cable to prevent accidental contact during repairs.

Step 18 | Disconnect the back panel connector

Remove the T3 Torx with the driver handle, and unscrew the two 4mm screws on the back panel connector cover.

Remove back panel connector cover using a pair of tweezers.

Use the pointed end of a spudger to pry up the back panel connector and disconnect it.

Step 21 | Remove the back panel

Remove the back panel.

Step 22 | Front Camera and Sensor Assembly

Remove the camera connector cover using a T3 Torx driver.

  • Loosen the four 4 mm screws with a T3 Torx driver.
  • Gently pry off the camera connector cover after loosening the screws.

Use tweezers to gently tilt the camera cover up.

  • Slide it out of the retaining slot in the upper right corner of the phone.

Step 24 | Disconnect the camera and sensor connectors

Use the pointed end of a spudger to pry the camera and sensor connectors straight up from the motherboard.

Disconnect the laser module connector.

Step 26 | Remove the front camera and sensor assembly

  • Use a T3 Torx driver to remove two 2.4 mm screws.
