Google Pixel 4 Display Assembly Replacement

Disassembling the Pixel 4's front laser assembly poses a risk of hazardous infrared laser emission exposure.

The Pixel 4's display panel is sealed in an airtight encapsulation, making it difficult to replace the front glass alone.

  • Remove the back panel to access the display connector.
  • Obtain replacement adhesives for both the back panel and display panel before proceeding.

Note that this procedure may destructively remove the Pixel 4's display panel, causing permanent damage to the OLED layers.

Read Google's safety warnings regarding front laser assembly disassembly.

Step 1 | Remove the SIM card tray

Thumbnail 3

Insert a SIM eject tool, bit, or a straightened paper clip into the small hole on the SIM card tray, located on the left edge of the phone.

  • Press firmly to eject the tray.
  • Remove the SIM card tray.

Step 2 | Heat the back panel glass

Step 2 image

Heat source application requires caution — risk of heat damage to display and internal battery.

  • Prepare an iOpener or use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate for thermal expansion.
  • Apply the heat source to the bottom edge of the back panel for one minute.

Step 3 | Apply a suction cup

Step 3 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2

Apply a suction cup to the heated edge of the back panel by pressing down on it.

If the back glass is badly cracked, cover it with clear packing tape for better adhesion or use strong tape instead of the suction cup. If still unsuccessful, superglue the suction cup to the broken panel, but note this method may cause damage.

Step 4 | Insert an opening pick

Step 4 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2

Apply steady pressure with the suction cup to separate the back panel from the frame.

  • Continue applying force until a gap is created, or reheat the edge if necessary.
  • Once a gap exists, carefully insert an opening pick into it.

Step 5 | Begin to slice the adhesive

Step 5 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3
  • Slide an opening pick across the bottom towards the left corner to cut the adhesive.
  • Still with the pick inserted, move it from the bottom left corner to the bottom right corner to slice the adhesive completely.
  • Leave the pick in place to prevent re-sealing of the adhesive.

Step 6 | Slice the lefthand-side adhesive

Step 6 image

Apply heat carefully to avoid damage or burns.

  • Prepare an iOpener.
  • Apply it to the left edge of the phone and let it sit for one minute.

Step 7

Step 7 image

Thumbnail 2
  • Insert an additional opening pick near the charge port.
  • Guide this new pick down to the bottom left corner of the phone.

Step 8

Step 8 image

Thumbnail 2

Insert an opening pick at the bottom left corner of the phone.

  • Pull the pick across the left side of the phone in a sawing motion to slice the adhesive.
  • Be aware that the adhesive can be very gummy, so it may require some effort to penetrate.

Continue pulling the pick until you reach the top left corner, near the camera. Leave the pick inserted at this point.

Step 9 | Slice righthand-side adhesive

Step 9 image

Apply iOpener to the right edge of the phone for 1 minute.

Step 10

Step 10 image

Insert a third pick at the lower righthand side.

  • Slide the pick up towards the top of the phone, slicing the right side's adhesive.
  • Stop when you reach the top right corner and leave the pick inserted.

Step 11 | Slice the top-side adhesive

Step 11 image

  • Position the third opening pick in the top right corner of the phone.
  • Guide it across the top side, cutting through the remaining adhesive.

Step 12 | Lift up the back panel

Step 12 image

Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Carefully lift the right edge of the back cover, opening it like a book.

Do not attempt to remove the panel entirely at this stage — it remains connected to the phone.

Step 13

Step 13 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2

Continue swinging open the back panel until it rests against the left edge of the phone, avoiding any strain on the attached ribbon cable.

  • In reassembly, power on your phone to test all functions before sealing the back panel.
  • Make sure to completely power down your phone before proceeding further with repairs.

Step 14 | Disconnect the battery

Step 14 image

Remove the T3 Torx screws (four 4.0 mm and one 2.1 mm) securing the battery connector shield.

  • Carefully note which screw comes from each location to ensure proper reassembly.
  • Set aside screws in a secure location to avoid mix-up during reinstallation.

Step 15

Step 15 image

Remove the battery connector shield with a pair of tweezers.

Step 16

Step 16 image

Avoid puncturing the battery when using a spudger near it.

  • Pry the battery connector straight up from the motherboard with the pointed end of a spudger.
  • To reconnect, align and press down on one side until it clicks into place, then repeat on the other; avoid pressing in the middle to prevent pin damage.

Step 17

Step 17 image

Use a spudger to fold the battery cable over, ensuring no accidental contacts.

Step 18 | Disconnect the back panel connector

Step 18 image

Remove the back panel connector cover using a T3 Torx driver.

  • Target the two 4mm screws.
  • Turn the T3 Torx driver clockwise to loosen and remove the screws.

Use the pointed end of a spudger to carefully pry up and release the back panel connector.

Step 21 | Remove the back panel

Step 21 image

Remove the back panel.

  • For custom-cut adhesives, refer to the reassembly guide.
  • If using a pre-cut adhesive card, follow the provided installation guide.

Step 22 | Front Camera and Sensor Assembly

Step 29 image

Apply iOpener to the right edge of the display for 1 minute.

Step 30

Step 30 image

Thumbnail 3

This process will almost always destroy the OLED display panel.

  • Only proceed if replacing an already-broken display assembly.
  • Suction cup: Apply to heated edge of display assembly.
  • For badly cracked displays, cover with clear packing tape or use strong tape as alternative.
  • As a last resort, superglue suction cup to broken display assembly.

Apply strong, steady force to create gap between display assembly and frame.

  • May require significant force depending on phone age.
  • Difficulty? Apply heat to edge and try again.
  • Insert opening pick into gap.
  • Additional heat may be required for older phones; apply and try again if necessary.

Step 31

Step 31 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2

Slide a opening pick along the right bezel of the phone.

  • Pick carefully, applying pressure between the display and the frame to slice the adhesive.
  • Leave the pick in place at the bottom right corner.

Step 32

Step 32 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2

Insert a second opening pick in the top left corner under the display assembly.

If it's difficult, reapply an iOpener to the upper edge.

  • Slide the opening pick around the corner and down the left side of the phone.
  • Stop halfway down on the left side and leave the pick inserted.

Step 33

Step 33 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2

Insert a third opening pick along the right edge, midway between the display and the midframe.

  • Tilt the pick slightly and apply pressure to begin prying the assembly apart.

Step 34 | Tilt the display up

Step 34 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2

Hold the phone firmly and gently tilt the display assembly upwards along the left edge.

  • Locate the display connector near the motherboard and carefully slide it out of its housing to separate the display assembly from the rest of the phone.

The connector should come out easily without any force applied.

Step 35 | Remove the display assembly

Step 35 image

Remove the display assembly.

  • Thread the replacement assembly's display cable through the motherboard cutout.
  • If necessary, unclip the white antenna cable or loosen/move the motherboard for clearance.

Be sure to test repairs before applying adhesives.

  • If using custom-cut adhesive, follow application instructions in a separate guide.
  • If using Tesa tape, refer to the relevant reassembly guide.

During boot-up calibration, do not touch the display assembly, as this may cause improper touch calibration and issues.
