Google Pixel 4 Charging Assembly Replacement

Do not reuse a deformed or damaged battery, as this is a potential safety hazard. Replace it with a new battery.

  • This repair requires removing the loudspeaker to access the charging assembly.
  • Be aware that disassembly of the front laser assembly may expose you to invisible infrared laser emissions, a hazard emphasized by Google. Read their safety warnings for more information.
  • Removing the loudspeaker will compromise its ingress gasket.

Step 1 | Remove the SIM card tray

Insert a SIM eject tool, bit, or a straightened paper clip into the small hole on the SIM card tray.

Press firmly to avoid damaging the SIM card tray.

  • Remove the SIM card tray from the phone.

Step 2 | Heat the back panel glass

Step 2 image

Prepare a iOpener and apply it to the bottom edge of the back panel for 1 minute.

Alternatively, use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate, but be careful not to overheat the phone, as the display and internal battery can be damaged by excessive heat.

Step 3 | Apply a suction cup

Step 3 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2

Apply a suction cup to the heated edge of the back panel, pressing down firmly to create suction as close to the edge as possible.

  • If the back glass is badly cracked, cover it with clear packing tape for better adhesion.
  • Alternatively, use very strong tape instead of the suction cup.
  • As a last resort, superglue the suction cup to the broken panel.

Step 4 | Insert an opening pick

Step 4 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2

Apply suction cup with strong, steady force to create a gap between back panel and frame.

  • If necessary, reapply heat to the edge before trying again.
  • Insert point of an opening pick into the created gap.

Step 5 | Begin to slice the adhesive

Step 5 image

Thumbnail 2

Slide the opening pick around the bottom left corner and across the left side of the phone in a sawing motion.

  • The adhesive can be very gummy, so use a pushing and pulling action with the pick to help it slice through.
  • Stop when you reach the top left corner near the camera and leave the pick inserted.

Step 9 | Slice righthand-side adhesive

Step 9 image

Prepare an iOpener and apply it to the right edge of the phone for 1 minute.

Step 10

Thumbnail 3

Do not attempt to remove the panel completely at this time.

  • Lift the right edge of the back cover, opening it like a book.
  • Leave the panel partially attached for now.

Step 13

Step 13 image

Thumbnail 2

Continue swinging open the back panel until it rests on the left edge of the phone, taking care not to stress the attached ribbon cable.

Do not power on your phone while reassembling unless explicitly testing before sealing the back panel.

Power down your phone completely before continuing work.

Step 14 | Disconnect the battery

Step 14 image

Remove the T3 Torx screws securing the battery connector shield.

  • Four 4.0 mm T3 Torx screws
  • 2.1 mm T3 Torx screw

Label and keep track of each screw for reinstallation purposes.

Step 15

Be extremely cautious when using a spudger near the battery to avoid puncturing it.

  • Use the pointed end of a spudger to gently pry the battery connector straight up from the motherboard.
  • To reattach, align and press down on one side until it clicks; repeat on the other side. Avoid pressing the middle.

Misaligned connectors can cause pin bending and permanent damage, so ensure proper alignment before pressing.

Step 17

Step 17 image

Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Hold the yellow pull tab firmly and gently pull up with steady force.

  • If the adhesive is stubborn, roll it around a spudger to continue pulling.
  • Spin the spudger occasionally to keep the exposed section of the pull tab short.

This may require significant force and be patient, as these tabs are prone to snapping in half.

  • If no progress is made after several attempts, try applying a few drops of high concentration (>90%) isopropyl alcohol under the left edge of the battery, allowing it to weaken the adhesive for 1 minute before continuing.
  • Repeat this process for each of the three pull tabs until they are removed or have snapped in half.

Step 23 | Remove the battery

Step 23 image

Never insert the opening pick near the charge port flex cable to avoid damaging it.

  • Insert an opening pick on the upper right edge of the battery to slice the adhesive underneath.
  • If needed, use the opening pick to dislodge the battery even if all three adhesive pull tabs are removed.

Step 24

Step 24 image

Do not reuse a deformed or damaged battery — replace it with a new one to avoid safety hazards.

  • Lift the old battery out of the phone, peeling away any leftover adhesive tabs as needed.
  • Wipe off any remaining alcohol solution from the phone using a lint-free cloth or let it air dry before installing the new battery.

Use stretch release adhesive on the replacement battery, or double-sided tape/adhesive strips in the phone's well (avoiding the charge port flex cable).

  • Temporarily reconnect the battery connector to its motherboard socket for proper positioning.
  • Lay the new battery in place and press firmly.

Disconnect the battery connector from the motherboard socket and resume re-assembly.
