Google Pixel 4 Battery Replacement

If your battery is swollen, take necessary precautions.

  • Discharge your battery below 25% before disassembling your phone to prevent thermal damage.
  • You don't need to eject the SIM card tray for this procedure.
  • Caution: Avoid disassembling the front laser assembly, as it may expose you to invisible infrared laser emissions.

Step 1 | Heat the back panel glass

Step 1 image

Careful not to overheat the phone as the display and internal battery can suffer from heat damage.

  • Apply an iOpener to the bottom edge of the back panel for one minute.
  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate, but monitor temperature carefully.

Step 2 | Apply a suction cup

Step 2 image

  • Press a suction cup firmly onto the heated edge of the back panel to create suction.

  • Position it as close to the edge as possible for maximum adhesion.

  • Use clear packing tape to cover a badly cracked back glass, enabling the suction cup to adhere.

  • Alternatively, use strong adhesive tape or apply superglue to secure the suction cup directly to the broken panel.

Step 3 | Insert an opening pick

Step 3 image

Thumbnail 2

Apply a strong, steady pull to the suction cup to create space between the back panel and frame.

If stuck, reapply heat and retry; difficulty may vary depending on phone age.

  • Insert the point of an opening pick into the created gap.

Step 4 | Begin to slice the adhesive

Step 4 image

Thumbnail 3

Slide the opening pick across the bottom towards the left corner to slice the adhesive.

  • With the pick still inserted, slide it from the bottom left corner over to the bottom right corner to completely slice the bottom side adhesive.
  • Leave the pick inserted in the bottom right corner to prevent the adhesive from re-sealing.

Step 5 | Slice the lefthand-side adhesive

Step 5 image

Prepare an iOpener and apply it to the left edge of the phone for 1 minute.

Step 6

Step 6 image

Insert a second opening pick under the back panel, near the charge port.

  • Position it at the bottom left corner of the phone.

Step 7

Step 7 image

  • Slide a pick around the bottom left phone corner and across the left side, cutting the adhesive.
  • If the adhesive is gummy, use a sawing motion to help slice it by pushing the pick in and out.
  • Leave the pick inserted when you reach the top left camera area.

Step 8 | Slice righthand-side adhesive

Step 8 image

Apply iOpener to the right edge of the phone for 1 minute.

Step 9

  • Insert a third pick into the lower part of the righthand side.
  • Slide the pick up towards the top, slicing the right side's adhesive.
  • Stop at the top right corner and leave the pick in place.

Step 10 | Slice the top-side adhesive

Step 10 image

Slide the third opening pick to the top right corner of the phone.

  • Move it horizontally along the top edge of the phone.
  • Slice through any remaining adhesive on the top side.

Step 11 | Lift up the back panel

Step 11 image

Carefully lift the right edge of the back cover, opening it like a book.

Do not attempt to remove the panel completely at this stage — it remains attached to the phone.

Step 12

Step 12 image

Continue swinging open the back panel until it rests on the left edge of the phone, taking care not to stress the attached ribbon cable.

Power on your phone and test all functions during reassembly, but be sure to power down completely before proceeding further.

Step 13 | Disconnect the battery

Step 13 image

Remove the T3 Torx screws securing the battery connector shield:

  • Four 4.0 mm T3 Torx screws.
  • One 2.1 mm T3 Torx screw.

Keep track of each screw for reassembly purposes.

Step 14

Remove the battery connector shield using a pair of tweezers.

Avoid puncturing the battery with a spudger.

  • Use the pointed end to pry the battery connector straight up from the motherboard.
  • To reconnect, align and press down on one side of the connector until it clicks, then repeat on the other side. Do not press the middle.

Step 16

Step 16 image

Use the flat end of a spudger to carefully bend the battery cable out of the way.

  • Fold the cable over so it doesn't accidentally touch other components during repairs.

Step 17 | Disconnect the back panel connector

Step 17 image

Remove the T3 Torx screwdriver from storage and use it to unscrew the two 4 mm screws holding the back panel connector cover in place.

Step 18

Use the pointed end of a spudger to pry up and disconnect the back panel connector.

Step 20 | Remove the back panel

Step 20 image

Remove the back panel.

  • For custom-cut adhesives: Follow the provided guide during reassembly.
  • For pre-cut adhesive cards, follow the separate guide for correct installation.

Step 21 | Remove the adhesive strips

Step 21 image

This may require significant force; be cautious not to snap the adhesive tab.

  • Pull the yellow tab on the adhesive strip with steady pressure.
  • If resistance is encountered, roll the tape around a spudger and continue pulling.

The adhesive tabs are prone to snapping; pull slowly.

  • Continuously maintain constant force while pulling up on the strip.
  • When using a spudger, rotate it occasionally to minimize exposed tab length.

If adhesives are not yielding, apply high concentration (>90%) isopropyl alcohol under each pull tab:

  • Fill a dropper or syringe with the alcohol and dispense a few drops under the left edge of the battery.
  • Allow the liquid to weaken the adhesive for approximately one minute before attempting removal again.

Repeat this process for all three pull tabs until they are removed or snapped in half.

Step 22 | Remove the battery

Step 22 image

Thumbnail 2

Do not touch the grip sensor cable, it is located under the battery.

  • If battery tabs are damaged, use an opening pick on the upper right edge of the battery to slice the adhesive underneath.
  • An opening pick may also be helpful if all three adhesive pull tabs have been successfully removed.

Step 23

Never reuse a deformed or damaged battery — potential safety hazard.

  • Lift the battery out of the phone, peeling away from any leftover adhesive tabs if necessary.
  • Remove any remaining alcohol solution with a lint-free cloth or let it air dry before installing a new battery.

Do not cover the charge port flex cable when applying adhesive to the phone's battery well.

  • If using stretch release adhesive, apply it to the battery. Otherwise, use double-sided tape or pre-cut strips in the battery well.
  • Peel away any tape liners to expose the adhesive.
  • Temporarily reconnect the battery connector to its motherboard socket for proper alignment.
  • Lay the battery in place and press firmly.
  • Disconnect the battery connector from its motherboard socket and resume reassembly.
