How to Replace the Back Panel Adhesive on Your Google Pixel 4 XL

This guide applies to the Google Pixel 4 XL. Although written for a Pixel 4, the process remains the same due to identical components.

Step 1 | Scrape off the old adhesive

Be careful when scraping the frame and back panel — risk of damaging camera sensors, spring contacts, and graphite film.

  • Use the flat end of a spudger or your fingernail to scrape off old adhesive from the frame and back panel.

Step 2 | Remove the remaining adhesive

Apply a few drops of high-concentration (90% or higher) isopropyl alcohol to any remaining adhesive.

  • Use a microfiber cloth to remove the remaining adhesive.
  • If still having trouble, apply a few drops of alcohol and scrape with a spudger.

Step 3 | Orient the adhesive

Place the new adhesive onto the back panel, using the camera cutout as a reference for its correct position.

Step 4 | Remove the adhesive liner

Remove the large rectangular liner by peeling it away.

The exposed adhesive is ready to attach to the back panel.

Step 5 | Apply the adhesive

Misaligned adhesive can lead to an improper seal.

  • Lay down the adhesive with the connector cable threaded through the camera cutout.
  • Press down firmly around the perimeter to secure the adhesive.

The adhesive is very sticky; once it touches the back panel, repositioning is not possible.

Remove any remaining liners from the adhesive using the pull tabs.

The adhesive is exposed and very sticky — handle with care.

  • Continue reassembly according to your phone's repair guide.
  • Prevent the back panel cable from touching the adhesive during assembly.

Return to this guide before securing the back panel.

Align the back panel with the phone's back, then place it down.

  • Firmly press the back panel into place along its entire edge for at least one minute.
