Google Pixel 4 XL Wireless Charging Coil Replacement

This guide was not endorsed by Google but is from iFixit's staff.

  • This repair guide helps you remove or replace the wireless charging coil on your Google Pixel 4 XL.

Be careful: The wireless charging coil is stuck to the back panel with a strong adhesive that must be destroyed and replaced.

Google warns against disassembling the front laser assembly, as it may expose you to hazardous infrared laser emissions. Read their safety warnings here.

Insert a SIM eject tool, bobby pin, or a straightened paper clip into the small hole.

  • Press firmly on the ejector to release the tray.
  • Remove the SIM card tray from the phone.

Step 2 | Heat the back panel glass

Step 2 image

Prepare an iOpener by applying it to the bottom edge of the back panel for 1 minute.

Use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate with caution; excessive heat can damage the display and internal battery.

Step 3 | Apply a suction cup

Step 3 image

Press a suction cup firmly onto the heated edge of the back panel.

  • To create effective suction, apply pressure as close to the edge as possible.
  • If the back glass is badly cracked, cover it with clear packing tape for better adhesion.
  • Alternatively, use strong adhesive-backed tape instead of a suction cup.
  • As a last resort, superglue the suction cup to the broken panel.

Step 4 | Insert an opening pick

Step 4 image

Apply strong, steady pressure with the suction cup to separate the back panel from the frame.

  • If it doesn't budge easily, reheat the edge and try again.
  • Once a small gap is created, carefully insert an opening pick into it.

Step 5 | Begin to slice the adhesive

Step 5 image

  • Slide the opening pick across the bottom towards the left corner to slice the adhesive.
  • With the pick still inserted, slide it from the bottom left corner over to the bottom right corner to complete the adhesive separation.
  • Leave the pick in place at the bottom right corner to prevent re-adhesion.

Step 6 | Slice the lefthand-side adhesive

Step 6 image

Heat the iOpener according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Apply heat to the left edge of the phone using the heated iOpener for exactly one minute.

Slide the opening pick around the bottom left corner and across the left side of the phone.

  • Slice the adhesive with a sawing motion using the pick, pushing it in and out if necessary due to its gummy consistency.

Be cautious of the top left camera area when inserting the pick.

Step 9 | Slice righthand-side adhesive

Step 9 image

Prepare an iOpener and apply it to the right edge of the phone for 1 minute.

Step 10

Do not try to remove the panel completely — it remains attached to the phone.

  • Leave the panel connected for now, proceed with caution.

Step 13

Continue swinging open the back panel until it rests on the left edge of the phone without applying stress to the attached ribbon cable.

  • Power on your phone and test all functions during reassembly.
  • Ensure your phone is powered down completely before continuing work.

Step 14 | Disconnect the battery

Step 14 image

Remove the T3 Torx screws: one 1.8 mm, one 4.1 mm, one 4.4 mm shouldered, and one 4.0 mm shouldered.

  • Set aside each screw separately for reinstallation later.
  • Take care to note the exact location of each removed screw.

Careful when using a spudger near the battery to avoid puncturing it.

  • Use the pointed end of a spudger to pry the battery connector straight up from the motherboard.
  • To reattach, align and press down on one side until it clicks into place; repeat for the other side. Avoid pressing the middle.
  • Do not misalign the connector or the pins can bend, causing permanent damage.

Use the flat end of a spudger to fold the battery cable back, preventing accidental contact.

Step 18 | Disconnect the back panel connector

Step 18 image

Remove the T3 Torx driver-secured 4.1 mm screws using the same driver.

  • Target the two 4.1 mm screws holding the back panel connector cover in place.
