Google Pixel 4 XL Screen Replacement

Note that this guide replaces the screen on a new frame (chassis), requiring transplanting all phone internals. If only replacing the display panel, follow an alternate guide.

  • iFixit-authored, not endorsed by Google.
  • Ensure battery is below 25% to avoid thermal event risk during repair.
  • This guide requires a replacement battery; do not reuse the original.
  • Caution: Disassembling front laser assembly poses hazardous infrared laser exposure. Read Google's safety warnings for more information.

Step 1 | Remove the SIM card tray

Step 1 image

Thumbnail 3

Locate the SIM card tray on the left edge of the phone.

  • Insert a SIM eject tool, bit, or straightened paper clip into the small hole on the SIM card tray.
  • Press firmly to eject the tray.
  • Remove the SIM card tray.

Step 2 | Heat the back panel glass

Step 2 image

Apply iOpener to the bottom edge of the back panel for 1 minute.

  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate with caution to avoid overheating the phone and causing damage to the display or internal battery.

Step 3 | Apply a suction cup

Step 3 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2

Apply a suction cup to the heated edge of the back panel by pressing down on it to create suction.

  • If your back glass is badly cracked, cover it with clear packing tape before applying the suction cup.
  • As an alternative, use very strong tape in place of the suction cup.
  • If necessary, superglue the suction cup to the broken panel as a last resort.

Step 4 | Insert an opening pick

Step 4 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2

Apply firm pressure to the suction cup with a steady hand to create space between the back panel and frame.

Be cautious as this may be challenging, especially for older models - apply more heat if needed before retrying.

  • Insert the point of an opening pick into the newly created gap.

Step 5 | Begin to slice the adhesive

Step 5 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3
  • Slide the opening pick across the bottom towards the left corner to cut the adhesive.
  • With the pick still in place, move it from the left corner to the right corner to fully slice the adhesive on the bottom side.
  • Leave the pick inserted at the bottom right corner to prevent re-adhesion of the adhesive.

Step 6 | Slice the lefthand-side adhesive

Step 6 image

Do not use excessive heat, which can damage the device.

  • Prepare an iOpener.
  • Apply it to the left edge of the phone and wait for exactly one minute.

Step 7

Step 7 image

Thumbnail 2

Insert opening pick under back panel, directly above charge port.

  • Position pick at bottom left corner of phone.

Step 8

Step 8 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2

Slide the opening pick around the bottom left corner, then across the left side of the phone.

  • Apply gentle sawing motion by pushing the pick in and out to help slice adhesive.
  • Be cautious with gummy adhesives; they can be stubborn.
  • Stop at top left corner, near camera, and leave the pick inserted.

Step 9 | Slice righthand-side adhesive

Step 9 image

Apply iOpener to the right edge of the phone for 1 min.

Step 10

Step 10 image

Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Carefully lift the right edge of the back cover, opening it like a book.

Do not attempt to remove the panel completely yet — it remains connected to the device.

Step 13

Step 13 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2

Continue swinging open the back panel until it rests on the left edge of the phone.

Avoid putting stress on the attached ribbon cable.

  • Power on your phone and test all functions during reassembly.
  • Ensure your phone is completely powered down before continuing work.

Step 14 | Disconnect the battery

Step 14 image

Remove the T3 Torx screws securing the battery connector shield:

  • 1 x 1.8 mm screw
  • 1 x 4.1 mm screw
  • 1 x 4.4 mm shouldered screw
  • 1 x 4.0 mm shouldered screw

Keep track of each screw and ensure it goes back to its original location.

Step 15

Step 15 image

Be extremely cautious when using a spudger near the battery to avoid puncture.

  • Disconnect the battery by prying the battery connector straight up from the motherboard with the pointed end of a spudger.
  • To reattach, align and press down on one side until it clicks into place, then repeat on the other; do not press in the middle.

Step 17

Step 17 image

  • Gently pull the connector away from its socket.

Step 21 | Remove the back panel

Step 21 image

Remove the back panel.

  • For custom adhesives: Follow the guide in step X for installation.
  • For pre-cut adhesive cards: Follow this specific guide for correct reassembly.

Step 22 | Remove the battery's adhesive pull tabs

Step 22 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2

Be careful when handling the adhesive strips as they may leave residue on your skin or tools.

  • Use blunt tweezers to lift the battery adhesive pull tabs for easier grip with fingers.
  • The three separate stretch adhesive strips are connected to a single black pull tab, which is notched for easy cutting.
  • Cut the black pull tab at the notch and remove each strip individually for best results.

Step 23

Step 23 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2

Remove an adhesive pull tab by grasping its black tab at a shallow angle and pulling steadily.

  • As the strip lengthens, use a spudger to roll it and continue pulling.
  • Keep constant force on the tab, occasionally rotating the spudger to maintain a short exposed section.

Be prepared for considerable force to be required during this process.

These pull tabs are prone to breaking. To minimize this risk, try pulling slowly.

  • If the tab does not stretch, apply a few drops of high concentration isopropyl alcohol under the left edge of the battery using a plastic dropper or syringe.
  • Allow the alcohol to penetrate for a minute before continuing.

Continue this process for each of the three pull tabs, either removing them or accepting that they may break.

Step 24 | Remove the battery

Step 24 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Damage to charge port flex cable or sensor cable is possible if the opening pick is inserted incorrectly.

  • Insert an opening pick on the upper right edge of the battery to slice adhesive underneath.
  • This can help dislodge the battery, even with all three adhesive tabs removed.
  • Avoid inserting the opening pick near the grip sensor cable or below it, as this risks damaging the charge port flex cable.

Step 25

Step 25 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2

Reusing a deformed or damaged battery poses a safety hazard.

Replace it with a new one before proceeding.

  • Lift the battery up, away from the phone to remove it.

Careful not to cover the charge port flex cable when applying adhesive.

  • Remove any remaining adhesive from the battery well.
  • If using stretch release adhesive, apply to the battery; otherwise, use double-sided tape or pre-cut strips in the phone's battery well.

Temporarily reconnect the battery connector to the motherboard socket for proper positioning.

  • Lay the battery in place and press firmly.
  • Disconnect the battery connector from its motherboard socket.

Step 26 | Remove the rear-facing camera cover

Step 26 image
