Google Pixel 4 XL Front Camera and Sensor Assembly Replacement

Step 1 | Remove the SIM card tray

Insert a SIM eject tool, bit, or a straightened paper clip into the small hole on the left edge of the phone.

  • Press firmly to eject the tray.
  • Remove the SIM card tray.

Step 2 | Heat the back panel glass

Apply iOpener to the bottom edge of the back panel for 1 minute.

Use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate with caution: avoid overheating the phone to prevent damage to the display and internal battery.

Step 3 | Apply a suction cup

Apply a suction cup as close to the heated edge of the back panel as possible by pressing down to create suction.

  • If the back glass is badly cracked, cover it with clear packing tape to aid adherence.
  • Alternatively, use very strong tape instead of the suction cup.
  • As a last resort, superglue the suction cup to the broken panel.

Step 4 | Insert an opening pick

Apply suction cup with steady force to create a gap.

  • Be prepared for varying difficulty based on phone age.
  • If struggling, reapply heat and try again.
  • Insert opening pick point into created gap.

Step 5 | Begin to slice the adhesive

Slide the opening pick across the bottom towards the left corner to slice the adhesive.

  • With the pick still inserted, slide it from the left corner over to the right corner to completely slice the bottom side adhesive.
  • Leave the pick inserted in the right corner to prevent re-sealing of the adhesive.

Step 6 | Slice the lefthand-side adhesive

Apply iOpener to the left edge of the phone for 1 minute.

  • Insert a second opening pick under the back panel, directly above the charge port.
  • Slide this opening pick to the bottom left corner of the phone.

Insert an opening pick at the bottom left corner of the phone.

  • Slide the pick across the left side to slice the adhesive.
  • Use a sawing motion by pushing in and out to help with slicing, as the adhesive can be very gummy.

Do not remove the pick until you reach the top left corner near the camera.

Step 9 | Slice righthand-side adhesive

Apply iOpener to the right edge of the device for 1 minute.

Insert a third pick on the lower right-hand side.

  • Slide the pick up towards the top of the phone, slicing the right side's adhesive.
  • Stop at the top right corner and leave the pick inserted.

Step 11 | Slice the top-side adhesive

Slide the third opening pick around the top right corner and across the top side of the phone.

  • Slice the final strip of adhesive.

Step 12 | Lift up the back panel

Carefully lift the right edge of the back cover, opening it like a book.

  • Be aware that the back cover is still connected to the phone.
  • Do not attempt to remove the panel yet.

Continue swinging open the back panel until it rests on the left edge of the phone.

Avoid putting stress on the attached ribbon cable.

  • Power on your phone and test all functions before reassembling.
  • Ensure your phone is completely powered down before continuing work.

Step 14 | Disconnect the battery

Remove the four T3 Torx screws securing the battery connector shield:

  • 1.8 mm T3 Torx screw
  • 4.1 mm T3 Torx screw
  • 4.4 mm shouldered T3 Torx screw
  • 4.0 mm shouldered T3 Torx screw

Keep track of each screw and ensure it returns to its original location.

Remove the battery connector shield with a pair of tweezers.

Be extremely careful when using a spudger near the battery to avoid puncturing it.

  • Using the pointed end of a spudger, pry the battery connector straight up from the motherboard to disconnect the battery.
  • To reconnect, align and press down on one side until it clicks into place; repeat on the other side. Avoid pressing the middle section.

Avoid accidental shorts by folding the battery cable out of the way.

  • Fold the battery cable over using a flat spudger, holding it securely in place.

Step 18 | Disconnect the back panel connector

Remove the two 4.1 mm screws securing the back panel connector cover using a T3 Torx driver.

Remove the back panel connector cover using a pair of tweezers.

Use the pointed end of a spudger to carefully pry up the back panel connector.

  • Pry up from the side with a gentle twisting motion.
  • The connector should now be disconnected.

Step 21 | Remove the back panel

Remove the back panel.

Pry battery adhesive pull tab gently backward.

Remove the T3 Torx screws securing the rear-facing camera connector cover.

  • One 2.7 mm screw
  • One 4.1 mm screw
  • One 4.2 mm screw

Remove the rear-facing camera connector cover using a pair of tweezers.

Locate and remove the T3 Torx screws securing the front-facing camera connector cover.

  • Remove one 4.1 mm T3 Torx screw.
  • Remove one shouldered 4.0 mm T3 Torx screw.
  • Remove the final shouldered 4.1 mm T3 Torx screw.

Use a tweezers to remove the front-facing camera connector cover.

Step 27 | Disconnect the camera and sensor connectors

Use the pointed end of a spudger to pry the camera and sensor connectors straight up from the motherboard.

Disconnect the additional sensor connector.

The cable may be stuck due to a small amount of light adhesive securing it to the phone.

Step 29 | Remove the front camera and sensor assembly

  • Remove two T3 Torx screws with a diameter of 2.7mm.
  • Remove one additional T3 Torx screw with a diameter of 3.1mm.

Remove the front camera and sensor assembly using a pair of tweezers.
