Google Pixel 4 XL Earpiece Speaker Replacement

Google advises against disassembling the front laser assembly due to potential hazardous infrared laser emission exposure.

  • Proceed with this guide to remove or replace the earpiece speaker in your Google Pixel 4 XL.

Step 1 | Remove the SIM card tray

  • Insert a SIM eject tool, bit, or a straightened paper clip into the small hole on the left edge of the phone.
  • Press firmly to prevent damaging the SIM card tray — risk of injury from broken metal pieces.

  • Remove the SIM card tray.

Step 2 | Heat the back panel glass

Apply a heating device (e.g. iOpener, hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate) to the bottom edge of the back panel for 1 minute.

Avoid overheating; the display and internal battery are sensitive to heat damage.

Step 3 | Apply a suction cup

Apply a suction cup to the heated edge of the back panel by pressing down on it.

  • To create suction, press the suction cup as close to the edge as possible.
  • If the back glass is badly cracked, cover it with clear packing tape for better adhesion.
  • Alternatively, use strong tape in place of the suction cup.
  • If all else fails, carefully superglue the suction cup to the broken panel.

Step 4 | Insert an opening pick

Apply firm pressure with a suction cup to separate the back panel from the frame.

Older phones may require additional heating before proceeding, as separation can be difficult.

  • Persist with steady force until a gap forms between the components.
  • Insert an opening pick into the newly created gap.

Step 5 | Begin to slice the adhesive

  • Slide the opening pick across the bottom towards the left corner to cut the adhesive.
  • With the pick still in place, move it from the left corner to the right corner to slice the rest of the adhesive.
  • Leave the pick inserted at the right corner to prevent re-adhesion.

Step 6 | Slice the lefthand-side adhesive

Apply heat to the left edge of the phone with an iOpener for 1 minute.

Insert a second opening pick under the back panel, directly above the charge port.

  • Slide it towards the bottom left corner of the phone.

Slide the opening pick around the bottom left corner and across the left side of the phone.

  • Slice the adhesive using a sawing motion by pushing the pick in and out.
  • Continue until you reach the top left corner, near the camera.
  • Leave the pick inserted when finished.

Step 9 | Slice righthand-side adhesive

Apply a iOpener to the right edge of the phone for 1 minute.

Insert the third pick below the righthand side.

Continue sliding up to the top right corner without removing the pick.

  • Slide the pick up towards the phone's top, slicing the adhesive on the right side.
  • Stop when you reach the top right corner and leave the pick inserted.

Step 11 | Slice the top-side adhesive

Slide the third opening pick around the top right corner and across the top side of the device.

Be careful not to press too hard on the screen.

  • Slice the final strip of adhesive using a gentle sawing motion.

Step 12 | Lift up the back panel

Do not attempt to remove the back cover completely at this stage.

  • Lift the right edge of the back cover using a gentle prying motion.
  • Open the cover like a book, but do not pull it away from the phone yet.

Continue opening the back panel until it rests on the left edge of the phone without straining the attached ribbon cable.

  • Test all functions by powering on the phone during reassembly and then powering it down completely before continuing work.

Step 14 | Disconnect the battery

Remove the four T3 Torx screws:

  • 1.8 mm screw (one)
  • 4.1 mm screw (one)
  • Shouldered 4.4 mm screw (one)
  • Shouldered 4.0 mm screw (one)

Keep track of each screw for reinstallation.

Remove the battery connector shield with a pair of tweezers.

Be extremely cautious when using a spudger near the battery to avoid puncture.

  • Use a pointed end of a spudger to pry the battery connector straight up from the motherboard.

To reattach press connectors, align carefully and press one side until it clicks in place, then repeat on the other side. Never press down on the middle.

Use the flat end of a spudger to carefully fold the battery cable out of the way.

Step 18 | Disconnect the back panel connector

Remove the T3 Torx driver-secured 4.1 mm screws.

  • Two screws hold the back panel connector cover in place.

Remove back panel connector cover using a pair of tweezers.

Use the pointed end of a spudger to pry up and disconnect the back panel connector.

Remove the back panel.

  • For custom-cut adhesives: Follow the guide in reassembly to ensure proper installation.
  • For pre-cut adhesive cards, follow the specific instructions provided with your kit.

Step 22 | Remove the camera connector covers

Pry battery adhesive pull tab gently to access screws underneath.

Remove the T3 Torx screws from the rear-facing camera connector cover.

  • One 2.7 mm screw
  • One 4.1 mm screw
  • One 4.2 mm screw

Use tweezers to carefully pry open the rear-facing camera connector cover.

Remove three T3 Torx screws:

  • 4.1 mm screw (1)
  • 4.0 mm shouldered screw (1)
  • 4.1 mm shouldered screw (1)

Remove the front-facing camera connector cover using a pair of tweezers.

Use the pointed end of a spudger to gently pry the camera and sensor connectors upwards.

Remove and carefully lift away the additional sensor cable from its secured position using a gentle prying motion.

  • The cable is attached by a small amount of adhesive, so be cautious not to damage it during removal.
  • Once removed, set the cable aside for reattachment later.

Step 29 | Remove the front camera and sensor assembly

Remove two T3 Torx screws measuring 2.7 mm in length, then remove a third T3 Torx screw measuring 3.1 mm in length.

  • The first two screws are identical and should be removed together.
  • The third screw is longer than the first two.

Remove the front camera and sensor assembly with a pair of tweezers.

Step 31 | Remove the screws securing the display connector cover

Use a T3 Torx driver to remove the four 3.5 mm screws that secure the display connector cover.

Remove the display connector cover using a pair of tweezers.

Disconnect the display connector from the motherboard using the flat end of a spudger.

Remove the T3 Torx driver and secure the 2.7 mm screw holding the motherboard in place.

  • Use a T3 Torx driver for this operation.
  • The screw is located at the motherboard to frame interface.

Step 35 | Disconnect the motherboard press connectors

Use the pointed end of a spudger to carefully disengage the side buttons connector from the motherboard.

  • Remove the two rear-facing camera connectors by gently prying them loose with the pointed end of your spudger.

Remove the earpiece speaker connector from its socket on the motherboard.

  • Remove the grip sensor connectors from the motherboard.
  • Disconnect the charge port connector from the motherboard.

Step 38 | Disconnect the antennas

Locate the top antenna connector on the motherboard.

  • Pry up gently using the pointed end of a spudger to unclip it.
  • Next, disconnect the bottom antenna connector.

Use a spudger to lift the top end of the motherboard.

  • Pivot the top end upwards and out of the phone's frame.

Be cautious not to snag ribbon cable connectors when lifting out the motherboard.

  • Slowly lift out the motherboard.
  • The rear-facing camera module may detach with the motherboard.
  • Completely remove the motherboard from its housing.
  • When reinstalling, inspect for ribbon cable connectors caught underneath.

Step 41 | Remove the rear cameras

Remove the rear-facing camera module using a pair of tweezers.

Step 42 | Remove the earpiece module

Remove the 2mm screw using a T3 Torx driver.

  • The screw secures the small earpiece module board to the phone.

Do not fully remove the board as it is still connected to the earpiece speaker.

  • Use a spudger with a pointed end to gently slide the board to one side, away from the top of the phone.

Insert the flat end of a spudger into the gap between the earpiece module and the phone's midframe.

Gently pry the earpiece module away from the midframe, as it is attached with light adhesive.

The module should come up without too much force.

Peel the earpiece speaker away from its adhesive on the phone's top frame.

  • Note: The microphone remains attached to the frame at this point.
  • Do not completely remove the earpiece speaker yet, as it may damage the microphone.

Use the pointed end of a spudger to carefully pry the microphone loose from its adhesive on the phone's top frame.

  • Verify that the microphone is fully separated from the top frame, taking care not to damage any surrounding components.
  • If necessary, use gentle prying motions with the spudger to release the microphone completely.

Remove the earpiece speaker and Soli motion sensor assembly using a pair of tweezers.

Remove the Soli motion sensor cable using a pair of tweezers.

The cable may be secured by light adhesive.

Once removed, only the earpiece speaker should remain in place.
